  • What do Bud Powell, Igor Stravinsky, and Ethan Iverson have in common? Equal parts balance, restraint, and economy... plus a healthy dose of 'wrongness.'

Can it really be a coincidence that Bud Powell, Igor Stravinsky, and I *all* sport a mustache?

This video is criminally underviewed. I guess I hadn’t realized, until now, how small your channel still is. You absolutely deserve millions of views, Brian.

I wouldn't even call it a secret necessarily, it makes sense that he wouldn't want to divulge too much given how adamantly he tries to fight the idea of "received wisdom." Such a great vid! 💖

love that interview with Evan’s brother. i often feel this way, which keeps me from compiling my music ideas and systems into a book to sell or video course. too much is spoon fed these days, but the process discovery is really a huge joy

Another resource that I like which discusses Bud’s music is David DeMotta’s dissertation, “The Contributions of Earl "Bud" Powell to the Modern Jazz Style.”

I really agree with what Ethan says towards the end. The bar is currently so high that people aren't hitting it as young as they were in the past, we all still have so much to learn and incorporate from the 70s and 80s, never mind more recent advancements.

@@MrMangaman1 It seems to me that some things we still can get deeper into from earlier times, even as far back as the 30's

@@liamelion I 100% agree, I only signaled out those decades as they tend to be the era we think of when we think of advancements in music and the "avant garde"
