    The “Mickey” is obviously strong in Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” and Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend,” and I’m sure they would humbly agree that it was an influence. “Mickey” is almost too catchy and radio-friendly. Not shocked Basil was a one-hit wonder, as she had nowhere to go but down after this. However, her legendary career as a choreographer more than kept her busy back then.

    Toni Basil is an icon. It’s easier to mention what she has not done than what she has because she’s done everything. Worked with Elvis, Sinatra, Michael Jackson for starters. She’s in the International Hip Hop Hall of Fame for being in the Pioneer group The Lockers. In The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame via “Mickey” song. Emmy winner, Grammy and MTV nominated. Been in and choreographed for many major movies and artists. Influenced Madonna to name a few. She’s had other hit songs, her follow up album had one track hit 4 on the dance charts. Had a hit in a 60s pop group and lead plenty of vocals to other songs. At 78 she is still dancing and in the latest Tarantino movie.

    This played every hour on MTV for quite a while. This is one of those songs that if you were around back then just instantly takes you back to the 80s. You have to understand back then MTV was everything. The videos debuted before the album or cassette was even available in stores. They rushed the videos out and being unique meant everything. Toni's version of this song is the one everyone knows and was frankly, executed better. Her version is playful and spunky. You may want to check out the original song by Racey called Kitty. It has a kind of a greaser, 50's vibe to it. It was released in 1979, a year after the movie Grease was released, so likely a 'riding the coattails' effort? I don't suggest it as a reaction, just go check it out on your own.

    • @MRoyClark
      @MRoyClark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the Racey version. It's pretty cool, but I can see why it didn't really leave a mark on its own. But, I'm a big ol' 1970s Glam, New Wave, and Power Pop nerd and I tend to like pretty much anything Mike Chapman wrote or produced. I really loved that genderfuck trend with early 80s music where women would cover songs by men and subtly change the meaning. In "Kitty", it's just some horny dude talking about a pretty chick who won't give him the time of day, but in this cover, there's a winking implication that Mickey's not into her because he's just not into girls. Like a more PC and family-friendly iteration of Josie Cotton's New Wave classic "Johnny Are You Queer?" A similar effect was achieved when Cyndi Lauper covered Prince's "When You Were Mine". It ended up being one of her best songs and rivaled (or possibly bettered the original) largely because it seemed to tell a whole different story by changing none of the lyrics or pronouns to accommodate the fact that a woman was singing it. The Prince original seemed to be about a possessive man who refuses to let go of an ex. With Cyndi Lauper, it sounds like she's singing to her gay best friend about how they've only gotten closer since they stopped dating.

    Hey Mr. Video! I only recently discovered that Toni Basil was one of the founding members of the iconic LA Lockers. She was the only female member of the crew who were regulars on Soul Train back in the early 70s. She was responsible for turning the Lockers into a professional dance troupe, and later became an actress and renowned choreographer. Talented lady!

    I was a cheerleader in high school (in the 70s), and this song came out about 4 yrs after I graduated, so this was the style of cheerleading that I did (cheerleading is a LOT different nowadays). So fun to see this 40 yrs later. Hard to believe I was ever that fit, LOL! Super-fun catchy song. Great reaction.
    BTW, the songwriters originally wrote this as Kitty, not Mickey, but Toni changed it to Mickey. I think that Toni was primarily a dancer who decided to make her own record and video. Not sure if she ever released any other records.

    Toni Basil made several music videos during the 1980s. One of them that I am familiar with, is for the song, "Over My Head". Toni Basil is known as a choreographer. She has a non-dancing appearance in the music video for "Nasty", by Janet Jackson. Basil taught the arm gesture to ZZ Top for their music video, "Gimmie All Your Loving" (or was it Paula Abdul?).

    The first song I ever heard by Weird Al Yankovic was a spoof of this song called "Hey Ricky" which was also spoofing I Love Lucy.
    It's a funny thing- We Gen-Xers probably know more about our parents' stuff than any other generation; We were the first generation of latchkey kids who would come home to an empty house with a TV after school, and in those days you'd only have about 5 or 6 channels to choose from, and daytime TV was very different in those days. Only the three major networks and PBS produced any original content, and on the networks it was all soap operas until the 5 O'Clock News came on. No Oprah, no Judge Judy, none of that crap. The indie stations had to fill up time, so a lot of it was reruns of old shows from the 50s like I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver and Dennis The Menace- So all the Gen-Xers, who were teens and tweens at the time got all the jokes in the Weird Al song.
    I know this tangent's getting way out in the weeds at this point, but speaking of Weird Al, he did a movie called UHF, which was about that era- The other thing the indie stations did was they'd have cartoons all afternoon, so we also grew up on Bugs Bunny and the early anime shows like Speed Racer and Marine Boy, and on some channels they had an afternoon host (In DC it was Captain 20, in Baltimore it was captain Chesapeake) and with the right host they could compete- and sometimes beat the networks in the afternoon ratings. That's basically the plot of UHF: Weird Al is the owner of a low-rated UHF TV station who hires before-he-was-Kramer Michael Richards to be his afternoon host, and starts competing with the big networks.
    So... Hope you enjoyed my rant...

    Everyone talking about her recently still being amazing, but let me tell you about what she was famous for other than this song, that is also amazing.
    there is a legendary concert called the T.A.M.I. show, it was a televised concert hosted by the beachboys and had major stars of the day like james brown, rolling stones, marvin gaye, and a long list of others... point is... this girl did the choreography and was dancer in that show. she added a lot to that show with her dance moves. now for the even bigger thang...
    hip hop. one of the 4 elements is b-boying. u know... dancin. break dancin.. poppin and locking... all that right? well the locking part of that... Toni Basil was a part of the Soul Train dancers in the 70s and formed a dance crew called the Lockers, named after the dance style of its founder and his nickname. She was a big reason they hit it big when they were able to get featured on Soul Train and people saw that style. So that dancer is a part of the heart and the soul of hip hop. and that is amazing. check out the lockers on soultrain here.... th-cam.com/video/QZ6fPc4krq0S/w-d-xo.html
