Toni Basil is a legend. She's been a dancer and choreographer since the '60s. She's almost 80 now. There are recent videos on YT of her dancing, and she can still move.

An extra hype cheerleading reaction 🤸‍♀! Toni Basil was a founding member of the 1970s LA street dance crew: The Lockers (Soul Train dancers which included Fred "Re-Run" Berry) and she choreographed Troop's 1989 music video "Spread My Wings". She a bad mama jama! Mickey was released as the lead single from Toni Basil's 1981 debut album: Word Of Mouth. It was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. It was produced by Greg Mathieson and Trevor Veitch. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #2 on the Cash Box 100 and #3 on the Dance Club chart. The single sold over two million copies and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. In 2009, VH1 ranked "Mickey" Number 6 on its list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the '80s.
The music video was directed and choreographed by Toni Basil. The cheerleaders featured in the video were members of a championship squad from Carson High School in Carson, California. The cheerleading uniform Toni Basil wore in the music video was the one she actually wore in high school. According to Toni Basil: "They (the record company) didn't put anything in the budget, I did everything myself. And this is the actual cheer sweater from Las Vegas High". "Mickey" was installed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the groundbreaking singles of the 1980s.
Toni Basil got the idea for the music video before she found the song to accompany it. The video was produced, directed, and choreographed by Toni Basil - she was the first person to do this for her own music video. She had made some short films in the past, and had a deal with a European company to make a collection of videos. For one of the videos, she decided to do something with a cheerleader concept, since she had been head cheerleader at Las Vegas High School (now known as Las Vegas Academy - that's why the sweater she wears in the video says, "LVHS").
She made the music video before MTV went on the air, so the music video was first established in the UK, where various TV shows played it and sent the song up the charts; it peaked at #2 in the UK in February 1982. In America, it took a while before MTV got the music video and started playing it, but when they did, the song took off, reaching #1 for a week in December 1982.
Toni Basil's song: "Mickey" is a cover of the song: "Kitty", which was originally recorded in 1979 by a group called Racey. In the original song's lyrics, Kitty is a girl. Toni Basil changed the title from "Kitty" to "Mickey" and the gender from female to male. Toni Basil choreographed the 1968 Monkees film: Head. If you do decide to watch Head, keep an eye out for Toni Basil in a surreal film sequence where she and Davy Jones dance alternately in a white and a black room wearing a combination of white and black.
For years, it was rumored that the name was changed to Mickey because Toni Basil developed a crush on The Monkees' drummer and lead vocalist Micky Dolenz, after meeting him on the set of their 1968 movie: Head, for which she was the choreographer. Toni Basil insists the song is not named after The Monkees' group member Micky Dolenz.
She also says there's nothing dirty about the song - it's just a chipper tune about a girl who really digs a guy. Rock critic Robert Christgau commented on the perceived 'obscene' content of the lyrics: "So come on and give it to me / Any way you can / Any way you want to do it / I'll take it like a man". Robert Christgau wrote in a review at the time that Toni Basil "was the only woman ever to offer to take it up the a$$ on Top 40 radio".
However, Toni Basil adamantly denies this: "NO! That's ridiculous. People read sh!t into everything. It's not about anything dirty. You change the name from boy to girl" - i.e., from "Mickey" to "Kitty" - "and they read anything they want into it! When it's a guy singing about a girl, it's a sweet line. But when a girl sings it, it must mean butt-f#cking! This is how the wrong foot gets cut off when the doc wheels you into the E.R. Then it's Micky Dolenz and butt-f#cking".
In 1999, DJ and producer Jason Nevins's dance remix of the song: "Mickey", was a club hit in Europe and Australia.
At UFC 189 held in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 11, 2015, fighter Mickey Gall walked out to his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut to the song. UFC president Dana White tried to talk him out of it and at one point even threatened to ban it, but Mickey Gall did it anyway. The crowd loved it, and it's been Mickey Gall's signature song ever since. It probably helped that the fight was also the debut of WWE star CM Punk, and that Mickey Gall dominated the fight from the very opening seconds to go on to win by submission victory.
In 2017, she launched an unsuccessful lawsuit against the makers of the television series: South Park, over their use of the song in parodying Barack Obama's 2008 election win.
In January 2020, Toni Basil released a re-recording of the song as "Hey Mickey" to digital and streaming platforms.
On May 17, 2022, The United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit Court granted a victory to Toni Basil last week, affirming a lower court decision. In the 8-page opinion issued by the Ninth Circuit last Wednesday, the judges ruled that Toni Basil, referred to by her real name, Antonia Basilotta, owns the sole copyright to her 1981 debut album: “Word Of Mouth”, which includes her breakthrough hit song: “Mickey”.
The song had a limited commercial impact upon its release but made waves in 2023 after it went viral on TikTok. The song's catchy melody and relatable lyrics about falling in love with someone who is unavailable made it a hit with users of the app.
The entire song structure of the Run-DMC's 1987 single: "It's Tricky", was consciously lifted from Toni Basil's song: "Mickey". According to DMC: "I just changed the chorus around and we just talked about how this rap business can be tricky to a brother."
The song has been covered by other artists including 📻: Tiffany, Sweet California, Lolly, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Carola, Olivia Newton-John, Xuxa, Sexbomb Girls and more.
The Irish teen girl singing group: B*Witched, recorded a version of the song that was used at the end of the 2000 film: Bring It On.
The song has been featured in some more films including 📽: The Kissing Booth (2018), Spy (2015), The Final Girls (2015), Parental Guidance (2012), Pitch Perfect (2012), Summer Palace (2006), Man On Fire (2004), Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Down To You (2000), Edge Of Seventeen (1998), Wayne's World (1992) and more.
The song has been featured in some TV shows including 📺: Doctor Who ("Death In Heaven" - 2014; "The Magician's Apprentice" - 2015), Glee ("We Built This Glee Club" - 2015), South Park ("About Last Night" - 2008), My Name Is Earl ("Early Release" - 2007), Friends ("The One Where They're Up All Night" - 2001), King Of The Hill ("Three Days Of The Kahndo" - 1998) and more.

      Oh Mickey, you're so fine
You're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey
      Hey Mickey
      Oh Mickey, you're so fine

      Hey Mickey
You've been around all night and that's a little long
You think you've got the right but I think you've got it wrong
Why can't you say goodnight so you can take me home, Mickey?
'Cause when you say you will, it always means you won't
You're givin' me the chills, baby, please baby don't
Every night you still leave me all alone, Mickey
Oh Mickey, what a pity you don't understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Mickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand??
      It's guys like you Mickey
Oh, what you do Mickey, do Mickey
      Don't break my heart, Mickey
      Hey Mickey
Now when you take me by the hooves everyone's gonna know
Every time you move I let a little more show
There's somethin' we can use, so don't say no, Mickey
So come on and give it to me any way you can
Any way you wanna do it, I'll take it like a man
Oh please, baby, please, don't leave me in a jam, Mickey
Oh Mickey, what a pity you don't understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Mickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand?

      Toni Basil Info 📰:
Antonia Basilotta aka Toni Basil was born on September 22, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is a singer, choreographer, dancer, actress, and director. In 1961, she graduated from Las Vegas High School, where she was a head cheerleader. Already known by the nickname "Toni", she later incorporated her cheerleading experience into her dance career, including her choreography/performance of her debut single: "Mickey". The cheerleader uniform that she wore in the music video was the very same one she wore in high school.
      Music Career Info 👩‍🎤:
Toni Basil's recording career began in 1966 with a single: "Breakaway", for A&M Records, which was the title song of the short film: Breakaway, by artist Bruce Conner. The B-side song: "I'm 28", was written by Graham Gouldman who later co-founded 10cc. Toni Basil sang, solo, the swinging Jazz number: "Wham Rebop Boom Bam", in the first season of Saturday Night Live for the January 17, 1976, show with Buck Henry as host. Toni Basil sold out solo shows at The Roxy in Los Angeles in June 1976, and sang the song on The Merv Griffin Show. She and The Lockers appeared on Saturday Night Live during the first season and also in later seasons of the show, as a singer and filmmaker, to perform in her urban style interpretation of the dance-music piece: Swan Lake. She was signed to Warner Bros Records at some point in 1976, but never released any material for the label.
In 1981, her debut album's single: "Mickey", achieved international success. The song is a cover of the song: "Kitty", a 1979 release by the UK band Racey. The original song did not include the "Oh Mickey, you're so fine" chant, which Toni Basil added. The Music video was conceived, directed, and choreographed by Toni Basil for the UK-based record label Radialchoice, before the inception of MTV in July 1981.
Released in the US on Chrysalis Records in September 1982, the song knocked Lionel Richie from No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December. It topped the music chart in Canada where it was issued by Virgin Records. The 45 was quickly certified Gold and in early 1983 reached Platinum status for sales of over 2 million copies in the United States alone.
The music video for the single: "Mickey", was one of the most popular early MTV videos. In the music video, Toni Basil wore her head cheerleader uniform from Las Vegas High School from which she graduated. During an interview on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of The 80's", Toni Basil said that she still owns the same cheerleader sweater she wore in the video. In 2009, VH1 ranked "Mickey" Number 6 on its list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the '80s. In 2017, she launched an unsuccessful lawsuit against the makers of the television series: South Park, over their use of the song in parodying Barack Obama's 2008 election win.
Her recording career consists of only two albums. Her first album: Word Of Mouth (1981), included a second Hot 100 single: "Shoppin' From A To Z" (#77 Pop), as well as three songs by Devo, with the group providing the backing track. The song: "Space Girls", was a re-recording of a 1974 Devo demo titled: "Space Girl Blues", that was later released on Devo's 1990 album: "Hardcore Devo: Volume One". Devo member Gerald Casale and Toni Basil were in a relationship at the time, and Toni Basil had been an early supporter of the group.
Her second album: Toni Basil (1983), yielded a third and final Hot 100 charting single: "Over My Head" (#81 Pop, which also reached #4 on the Dance chart. Her song: "Girls Night Out", appeared on the 1986 movie soundtrack for the film: Modern Girls. To date, there have been five Toni Basil best of collections released on CD.
In 1999, DJ and producer Jason Nevins's dance remix of the song: "Mickey", was a club hit in Europe and Australia.
      Dance-Choreography Info 💃:
Toni Basil started dancing professionally in childhood, but her career started when she served as an assistant choreographer to David Winters and as a dancer on the television show: Shindig!, a breakthrough music variety television show that premiered on the ABC network in 1964. She was a lead dancer in the 1964 beach party film: Pajama Party, and a dancer in the 1964 Elvis Presley movie: Viva Las Vegas.
Also in 1964, she assisted choreographer David Winters, for Steve Binder's concert film: T.A.M.I. Show. The T.A.M.I. Her 1960s film choreography work includes Village Of the Giants (1965), The Cool Ones (1967), and The Monkees' 1968 film: Head, in which she is partnered on-screen with Davy Jones during the movie scene: "Daddy's Song".
Toni Basil is also credited with bringing street dance to prominence as a founding member and manager of 1970's street dancing group: The Lockers, which included Fred Berry (Re-Run from the 1970s tv show What's Happening!!) and Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quiñones (from the 1984 movies Breakin', Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo). A 2012 Dance Magazine article cited her as the pioneer in merging ballet with street dance for a piece she choreographed for Saturday Night Live: "Swan Lake", in 1978. The Lockers toured with Frank Sinatra, including performances at Carnegie Hall. They opened for Funkadelic at Radio City Music Hall and many other music acts in Las Vegas; they appeared on many television shows including Saturday Night Live and were Soul Train regulars.
Toni Basil choreographed David Bowie's Diamond Dogs Tour in 1974, his Glass Spider Tour in 1987, and his music video for the song: "Time Will Crawl" (1987).
In 1980, Toni Basil choreographed, and co-directed with David Byrne, the music video for the Talking Heads single: "Once In A Lifetime". She worked with Talking Heads again to direct and choreograph the music video for their 1980 song: "Crosseyed And Painless".

Back in the 80s there was over weight cheerleaders, don't know why they try and act like we are "fat shaming" now, In the 80s nothing was a big deal
