I bet no one has ever said "Goodbye" to a lover in their life with more conviction than Maynard did with this performance and this song. This performance lives forever in a time when Tool fans were honestly ready to be disappointed, willing to overlook a bland second serving, and where absolutely BLOWN AWAY by Maynards offering. Hands down the best band of the 90's, and the turn of the century.. I expect my old age to be full of young musicians exalting the movement and the man that was James Maynard Keenan.⁷
Seems like he messed up a little there. Strained his voice in the wrong way and struggled with the higher notes at the end of the song. Phenomenal vocalist and a great performance, but at the end of that scream you can hear his voice crack and he drops it. Too much tension in the wrong places 😔
I favorited this twice. Maynard is my medicine. I always feel better hearing his voice. Whether it be in A Perfect Circle, TOOL, or Puscifer. He is incredibly talented.
I could not agree more. He walked me through my first shroom trip with The Thirteenth Step, and ever since then he has been a big staple in my musical life.
I come and watch this every year on March 15th. One of my best friends and I followed APC around for a few years and we were in the second row for the performance. One of the most fun memories of my 20s!
Dont sleep on Jeff freidl...the stone and echo show live at the red rocks is probably the best show you'll ever hear of a perfect circle live...they absolutely kill it at that show
I come back to this every 6 months or so....for a good 15 years now. It's just that good. Just a cool performance that you wouldn't remotely expect to see on....Jay Leno, of all shows. Also kinda nuts to realize how many talented people were in the band at this moment. James Iha....Twiggy...Maynard....odd but totally legit super group of a sort during this era. Makes me nostalgic watching this...
Dylan Caldwell it's a close run thing. I don't think it's superior, just different and presented slightly differently. I never got this picking favorites obsession syndrome myself.
I didn't realize that in these lyrics Maynard is talking to a junkie, pretty heavy shit. A friend of mine fighting a demon of such told me this. This fucking music keeps him alive. Thank you Maynard
It the perspective of the junkies brother who doesn't understand as Maynard put it that it's not a sprained ankle. The junkie is rumored to be Lanye Staley though I've never heard Keenan say it.
To be able to see a band play live and play outstanding is a delight in these modern times My own personal draw has always been to bands who can write/play/vocalise there music Perfect circle tick all the box's👍
Every time I see Maynard live on video or when I am so fortunate as to be near a performance one word comes to my heart/mind/soul seemingly unbidden...luscious...
I've seen interviews of josh Freese. He seems cocky but with how he plays who could blame him. He is a fukn monster on drums. He plays it exactly as on the record. Freese I worship your style, control, technique and timing.
I would say he is more goofy and silly than cocky, but I can see how some situations might come off as that. And yes, he's a master of movement behind a kit.
Lmao @'trust me, no one will remember this band in 10 yrs' sure thing kid... This band been rocking for over a decade.. Maynard is my only living male vocalist crush today. This voice... It's amazing.
+JuditasDude it's just some power chords. Honestly the homeless guy I hear on my street every day has better licks. sorry but it's the truth. Maynard would probably agree.
+JuditasDude my bad, I thought you were referring to the bridge of the song for some reason.... as for that one particular fill, still meh. Watch a guy like Mike Byrne on the drums and it makes this guy look like an amatuer. I was expecting APC to be a great live band, but in all honesty it sounds pretty sloppy to my ear. cheers
Really? check out Freese discography. he is a respected studio and session drummer. He is playing with Sting right now. sorry but talking like this you're just showing off your stupidity or maybr you just an ignorant with hearing problems, sorry...
Josh Freese is a much more creative drummer than Mike... If you were making the argument of Danny Carey from Maynard's main band Tool I would understand but when you really look at Josh's full career and you analyze his playing, he blows Mike out of the water. (His work with NIN alone) The fill in question is nothing special and this song is actually in 3/4 and that is just a 16th note fill broken between the hands and feet. Post Jimmy Chamberlin Pumpkins haven't done anything remotely as complex or even outside of 4/4.
My wife and I were crusing down the road a few days ago.... we were jammin out to the Outsider... as the song finished we looked at each other and were still amazed at Maynards music and lyrics. I was like... " God damm he rocks!!!! She said... " Maynards music in one word leaves you SATISFIED not lacking with anything. Maynard is a master.
What a great performance! Raw and intense. And, of course, Maynard. Reminds me of Slayer performing Reign n Blood on Kimmel. Different genre, but equally raw and intense.
I’m in this comment section again because someone commented on my original comment so of course when that happens you have to watch the whole performance again, gladly and then comment again because that’s how compelling the performance is. I’ve been listening to Maynard since I was a little girl, I’m 41 now, I would say APC and give credit but specifically Maynard because I was introduced to him in Tool first. My big brother is 8 years older than me and of course that’s where I got my fascination with this genre. We grew up in a rough neighborhood, crack house across the street, gangs, drugs dealers, etc if there’s a stereotype connected to that in music one may assume this isn’t exactly the first genre that pops into mind for the likelihood we’d listen to. We were the only ones on the block who listened to heavy metal (not exactly heavy metal but The kids on the block lumped it because they didn’t know any better, but yes Slayer, slipknot, etc) and we got made fun of for it, so I hid it for many years, and tho I grew up on it I didn’t actually appreciate it until I had my first child and the heartbreak of their father. I could keep going but I’m starting to cry, I’m so thankful to have been born in this era of music and my brother for introducing it to me ❤
Have anyone noticed that Billy is playing hes main Les Paul plus his backup on this video? lead me to think that they recorded this twice and mixed the footage, probably due to guitar failure, because those guitars are exactly the same specs/tuning, so it doesnt make any sense to swap them in the middle of the song. From 0:40 until 1:40 hes playing the backup then the rest of the video is his main.
What a super Group! Tool vocalist Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Nine inch nails drummer and Voldemort
Lol
Josh freeze ?
Voldemort you mean Adam Jones guitar tech billy is his name
Stephanie Murphy he means James Iha. He didn’t even mention Adam Jones and NIN guitar tech Billy Howerdel.
@@BullyMaguire4ever ya Billy Howerdell is guitar tech for Adam Jones he knows how to keep them in tune and shredd
I can watch Josh Freese playing all day. He is God on the drums.
I thought this comment is days old after Josh played with Foo
Bad mf him
Maynard prefers Brad Wilk apparently
Josh Freese is a god that kneels at the alter of Danny Carey. But amazing for sure
Ok but why does Maynard love Brad Wilk?
This has to be one of the best performances on a late-night show of all time. Maynard is amazing here.
Adam Martin yeah thank God for YT or this would have been lost!!
This and Faith No More
Shit....... The whole god damn bands on point
By far the best performance ever on the tonight show
i agree!! just heard for the first time, but i'd say soad - spiders on conan was a 1st til this one snatched 1st fav~! these peformances need better source archiving. @nbc
Maynard's got a voice of a gift from God himself!
Maynard always sounds perfect live 😩 I love him so much
Agreed! So happy I went to the Sessanta show in April. ❤
I bet no one has ever said "Goodbye" to a lover in their life with more conviction than Maynard did with this performance and this song.

Or with Deftones... Damn that song is good
They were right about you.
Should your drama prove scincere

Were they always this good live?
Or was this an exceptional performance?
I saw this for the first time last night, I’ve watched it about 10 times now!
@@timjorden8329 they were ALWAYS this good live!

Freese is unbelievable.
GUESS WHAT HE"S BACK!
Iha never gets enough credit
Extremely clean playing, like he’s laying down the track in the studio to a metronome.
I come back to this every 6 months or so....for a good 15 years now. It's just that good.

Can't be more perfect performance then this one.
Live red rocks stone and echo

All these years later and this song still kicks ass. #longlivemaynard
Maynard's voice could cure cancer
definitely didn't cure my dead wife
Tell that to his mom.

Such a brilliant live band such professional musicianship
Incredible song, just wow
Its a Perfect Circle..i love it
Holy cow, Josh Freese punishes those drums. Someone please take this video and put light sabers in his hands.
Hahaha that shirt cracks me up. Incredible band in top form. Sublime stuff
Good point. I guess they had to approve all the content
Josh Freese kills it!!
I remember watching this live. When Maynard held that ill never forget. I sing it that way now because of this.
Their best album in my opinion. God dam what a performance
Dylan Caldwell it's a close run thing. I don't think it's superior, just different and presented slightly differently. I never got this picking favorites obsession syndrome myself.
Damn, makes me happy just to be alive! First time I seen Billy live in action. Upper Echelon of musicians.
Gotta be one of the best live performances ever. I still love it...
3:32. Maynard is such a master of art, it wasn’t enough to put it there, it had to be just..so. There, it belongs. Now, where were we?
I didn't realize that in these lyrics Maynard is talking to a junkie, pretty heavy shit. A friend of mine fighting a demon of such told me this. This fucking music keeps him alive. Thank you Maynard

Asyidena Good for you, although I get the feeling Keenan would find that a tad wanky, haha.
Josh is monster drummer
Maynard looks like an 8 year old girl who loves Brad Wilk lol! I'm sure that was intentional and it was great!

everything is intentional

Devo too
One word; Brilliance
