Do a video on JD Beck pretty please!
I'd love to see Abe Cunningham of deftones, he's the most underrated drummer in rock- He's so endlessly creative, plays with power and dynamics, such a great, unique drummer!
I met Abe at Namm two months ago! Great idea!
@@DimitriFantini That would be amazing! Thanks!
Oh yeah!!!!
Ilan Rubin, the current NIN drummer is right there, too. Beast.
Couldn't agree more. Abe is a beast and most definitely underrated. So tasteful but with so much power. Always lends himself to the track and never over plays
I saw him play in A Perfect Circle in Melbourne,Oz.
Blew me away.
Very visual drummer.
Mannnn I would love to see him with A Perfect Circle
Just saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last weekend, it was extraordinary.
Will be seeing Foo Fighters this summer.
I saw Josh play with APC at Festival Hall, Melbourne 🇦🇺 in 2004. His drumming made the entire gig for me.
I heavily recommend that everyone go to Rick Beato's channel and listen to his interview with Freese!
just finished watching that which actually brought me here!
Yeah, great guy. He's been around the block!
@@stanlojewski6761You talking like he is some dodgy woman, putting it about. Lol.
@@michaellawlor5625 lmao 🤣
@@michaellawlor5625 lmao 🤣
His drumming with APC is flawless
APC is his best work imo and watching him play those drum tracks live in 2004 was a memorable concert.
Josh Freese is such a beast!!! There is a reason why he has played on tons of hit records. Great insight and breakdowns, Dimitri! Please keep them coming.
I've been a fan since I was a kid! Used to study tons of records he was on and learn them note for note. That was ages ago haha
Freese is one of my favorite drummers I have been watching him play for decades and saw him play live many times in the 90’s up close my favorite is still watching him play for The Vandals he’s very creative
I’d say you are very lucky!!!
You know!!! Josh Freese is the soul of the Vandals. I love the Vandals and Josh one of my favorite drummer. Really is the other planet
Freese's level of skill and sophistication is frankly > almost everyone he plays with. To see this level of chops and depth of knowledge at a Foo Fighters concert is unheard of. It's exciting to see such a monster drummer who's encouraged to shine with a band this big, and comparable to the huge audience that Peart had with Rush, and a gift to watch, especially if you're a drummer.
Freese is one of the guys I look to when figuring out what can be played live that won't get lost in subtlety (as you mentioned)... like when a drummer is playing more ghost notes that no one hears than they do phrases and accents that are unmistakable.
I applaud and appreciate Dave Grohl for two things when it comes to Freese: 1) having the clout to pull a drummer of his caliber into the Foo Fighters, and 2) having the knowledge and appreciation to know what a huge addition Freese would be to the band.
Well said. No mistaking it was the right choice. At the Taylor tribute watching him play Hot for Teacher I knew then!
Very thoughtful comment! That's a great point about the distinction of tiny details not translating past a certain size audience!
FYI: Saw Josh play in Melbourne with Fooies earlier this year - WOW!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Obviously Dave would steal the show but Josh absolutely eclipsed the entire band IMHO!!! A MASTERCLASS in the ‘craft’ of drumming - SUPERB!!! 🙏👍👏😎
Very well put!
Ŵath the rick beato interface with him
Just to be a NIN drummer is on another level, your playing complicated drum machine parts not really made for regular drums, and at ridiculous speeds, but that's what playing over 45 years straight looks like...and that's insane.
Those kids from that music school covered "Wish " this week and that same little girl from the Korn song sang...but there are only a few TH-cam drummers who have nailed a few songs.
*You’re, not your.
In 1994 I bought the art of rebellion by suicidal tendencies, Joshua’s 20 years old played the whole album. I had never heard of him And I was blown away.
I gotta check out that album!
I saw Nine inch mains years ago. They played most of the show behind a screen. I sat at an angle where I could see only Josh. It was really cool watching him with where the audience couldn't see him. Elite live drummer.
Loved how freese really boxes in the grid and freeses the time and groove
I see what you did there!!! 😜
I first say Josh with The Vandals and later with NIN. He's loved and he's fantastic, and I appreciate all that he has done. Thank you for giving him props. There is a visible difference in Grohl and how he moves through a show now without the added interactions he had specifically with Taylor, but if Dave is healing then so are we. Much love to Foo Fighters and all Foo Fans, and much love to Josh.
He was also a hugely distinctive ingredient in A Perfect Circle.
You are so right! I used to learn his playing note for note in that group and some other albums
He's a great rock drummer...He's in such high demand and esteem because he has a ton of skill, reads music well, plays for the song, can tear it up when needed and, and, and most importantly is a great guy to spend 4 months with 16 hours a day on a cramped tour bus. Just keeping it real...
Well said Dave!
He played with Devo …. because the drumming on their cover of Satisfaction by the Stones!
Maybe I should cover that!
First time subscriber. you know what i like about how you approach this review? you actually let the music play out.. like a lot. most reviews are just usually the main narrator talking, and showing very little music. so kudos , this was very well done
Glad you liked that!! I adjusted after some feedback on other recent videos.
Although I have a feeling there are complaints on this video about the very thing you prefer!
Ha! You’re probably right! Didn’t even think of it like that lol. Good luck on whichever path you decide young grasshopper 🎉:) 😊
And Josh has nothing but admiration for Dave's drumming skills
He doesn’t hack at the drums he places his hits and does it purposefully and conserve energy in between. I’ve been watching his playing for over 20 years and that has always been the bit of magic
I love how versatile Josh is. He seamlessly can just switch up genres and still have the appropriate power mixed with finesse, all the while staying in pocket. Awesome drummer!
He’s truly incredible!
@@DimitriFantini Most definitely! I’m subscribing to his TH-cam channel as we speak, to check out more of his content. Super inspirational!
First time I saw Foo Fighters was on a cross Canada festival in Saskatoon the summer of 2000. A Perfect Circle was touring their debut album that Josh played on & I think he was touring with them!
He was indeed! Josh was also friends with Taylor.
Taylor Hawkins was one of the greatest ever. Josh is one of the greatest drummers ever.
Josh is better tho, let’s be real.
yup.. he's the beast! 🫵🏼
And Dave is one of the greatest drummers ever.
@@gtrbri98 he is more than just a greatest drummer.. he's also a great songwriter, vocalist, arranger, band leader, in music business, as a son, a dad & a husband.. more than all that he is a nice person
Just watched a Josh Freese interview a while ago and this cat has been on the circuit a very long time. He has skins on the wall, he’s played with the best. He started at age 12 playing at disneyland with a cover band, then started playing with the Vandals at 18 years old. He’s played on close to 500 albums. He is definitely the right man for the Foo Fighters. they were smart to pick him up
Thanks for this, man. Josh Freese is really inspiring for us rockers. And yourself Dimitri play very musically. Keep on rocking! 👊🏻🤘🏻
Thank you for the kind words! So glad you enjoyed the vid :) 👊
Some of my favorite Josh Freese moments are with A Perfect Circle. Watching the live performances on the late night shows (specifically Conan O'Brien if I remember correctly), his playing is effortless and fluid. The parts are seemingly simple but his power and stage performance make them enjoyable to watch. Check out "The Outsider" and "Judith". I also got to see Josh play with Weezer when drummer Patrick Wilson decided he wanted to be out front.
Judith is one of the songs that got me learning his tracks note for note back in the day!
He has Great feel and chops !!! Practice brings every player better than a day week month or year ago better!!!! Dedication and lots of hours to your passion the outcome is always positive to everyone
Very interesting Video! Also, a big part of Josh Freese being in a band like this is his absolute class act personality and professionalism. Concerning rimshots, my old drum teachers never worked with me on playing rimshots and I had to to relearn playing rimshots after being a drummer for over 12y, but now I have them down to a t.
Holy lord your tuning is so good... Also speaking of toms, Josh's back to back flawless rimshots on the toms are peak.
Ah thanks so much Jack!!!!! Really appreciate that 🙏
Freese's drumming in the clip also reminds me of Bozzio in his Missing Persons days, incredible chops & energy. The Foos sound great with Josh drumming.
Awesome video! Your love of the instrument shines through. Freese is a beast, and I'm so glad that he's with The Foos. In addition to staying loose on the kit, everything should be within easy reach.
Thanks!!! Glad you enjoyed the vid :)
Josh's playing is such an inspiration. Power, speed, creativity and rverything he plays is SO CLEAN and precise.
He is in my top 5 favourite drummers...its a long list
Who are the other four?
He played on Chris Cornells solo record. Mind blowing
Great video showcasing the greatness of Josh Freese. He doesn't get nearly enough the recognition that he deserves but that is all about to change now that he's joined the Foo Fighters!
Glad you liked the vid, appreciate the kind words! 🙏
14:58 The last tom hits are a tribute to a Missing Persons’ Terry Bozzio US Festival song ending.
1:14 hes doing the drums for the nine inch nails song “you know what you are?” which Dave Grohl act… ok and the uploader just explained that haha😅
Yup!!! Well as some other comments pointed out, I seem to have played the wrong NIN song with Josh afterwards. Which makes a lot of sense… I watched the video a few times and thought to myself “wait where was that drum part? Did I miss it? Is there another version somewhere?” haha
There`s a concert video with Devo Live at Lollapalooza, right here on TH-cam, with Josh Freese on drums. It´s a great concert, and Josh is kicking ass, he makes the show even better, so check it out if you`re into Josh Freese.............❤
Thanks Dimitri ,this was exceptional ,and so was your break down and playing . This is another level of stick technique and master drumming .😂😂
thank you so much Nick! That means a lot to hear and I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
Keyboardist applauded
Great job! Let's see some Dave Weckl breakdowns!
wrong nin clip thogh, he is ref "you know who you are" track 2 on with teeth i think, this is fro the 2007 album the slip :) love both though ;)
You’re right and I know!! Can’t change it now! 😂
@@DimitriFantini just so people cn check that track as well :) love the work sir !
Pretty Josh Freese was the live drummer for Devo when I saw them soemtime in the 90's. Lollapalooza @ Pine Knob? '95? '96? Shredded
yup. He has been their official drummer for so long. Saw him play with DEVO as well and I was kinda freaking out standing about 10 feet away. lol
Pretty *sure...
When I listened to Josh F with Dwezel Zappa in the early 90's I knew he was great! His style back then was way ahead of other drummers
NINE INCH NAILS IS PHENOMENAL LIVE
Saw APC and NIN both shows with Josh Freese and he kick ass.
Freese is a beast. He will be an amazing addition to the band. That being said, there's a kid named Tosh Peterson who's been playing for performers (wasting his talent IMHO) like Lil Nas X. Young Thug and Bad Bunny. The kid is Hawkins 2.0. He's also done work with bands like Filter and Fall out Boy and would fit in Taylor's throne perfectly. If you don't know who he is, look up the Drumeo thing he did where he had to learn a Deep Purple song as fast as possible without hearing the drums in the song. By the first 8 count he plays after hearing it once, you will understand why I'm so hyped on this kid.
Yes Tosh is a beast of a drummer and a friend! He’s been killing it on tour with a lot of artists 🔥
First bit with foos double bass deum what is the original video ?
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you!
So glad you did!! 👊
Feature Shannon Larkin an absolute monster on the kit.
So true!
great new drum channel! Josh Freese is one of the GOAT's of the past 30 years.
So glad you dig the video, thanks!!!
Great video - love that Josh is filling those massive shoes of Taylor
Where’d you get the drum kit angle footage?
Loved this vid! Please breakdown Andy Fisenden, amazing drummer from Australia
Thanks for watching!! Will add Andy to the list!
Thanks for the video . Could you please break down Jon's theodore on QOTSA, and joey castillo on era vulgaris. turning on the screw! please!
He plays so many awesome Bozzio licks, especially the last clip
He makes it work so well in his own style, too!
A Perfect Circle is where I know him from. He's awesome.
His drumming is INSANE with APC
Would love to see a break down of John Theodore, particularly his stuff with the Mars Volta. Or a video on Jimmy Chamberlin.
Josh’s hairline changed from 2008. He has way more hair today. Wonder what he did? lol! Through the badass drumming that’s the first thing I noticed.
A Californication hair transplant, to stay relevant? 🤷🏼♂️
Maybe he’s aging backwards? Lol
Of the many concerts I've seen live over the last 25 years, three drummers stand out. Danny Carey of Tool, Josh Freese, and Vinny Paul with Pantera. Seen Freese with A Perfect Circle twice. Wish I could've seen Bonham but unfortunately that was before my time.
Its all about the energy and who your playing with..Dave enjoys all out blasting..its not a big deal...the big deal is backing a singer and song with taste
Which is why Josh is one of the greatest!
My suggestion for another breakdown would be josh freeze pt 2
I like this idea!!!
Saw Josh with Devo. He absolutely SLAYED.
Please take a look at Taylor Hawkins' performance. This is mainly his solo and the polyrhythmic pattern of my hero, which he played at the concert❤❤❤
I think the point of looking at Josh is for the skills, they are both GOATs in their own right, and they were friends. The highest form of flattery is for Josh to be capable, able, and willing to sit in, I think it's understood that Taylor (and Dave) 'set the tone' (for the break in the song) years before,... again the point is "look at fricking Josh go GGs brother and thank you! " RIP Taylor, love honor and respect always from fans and friends, for eternity.
Love Josh Freese!!!
really glad you put this on TH-cam......it is awesome......Josh has huge shoes to fill.....
this month will be 2 years already for Taylor Hawkins........many thanks Dimitri..........
It’s still so hard to believe :(
Love to see you break down some Nate Smith especially his performance of Prayer from the Montreal jazz fest
I will have to watch that!!! Thanks!
It’s about time Foos add Double Bass!!!!
Right??
Amazing breakdown! Subscribed:)
Welcome aboard!
Dude sounds like a drum machine in the best possible way.
Great review and comments!!!!
Thanks!!
Rascal Flatts... he played on a record or two. He's just got a great pocket. If I'm not mistaken, he grew up seeing Jeff Porcaro.
Yes he grew up studying with Jeff!
You should react to Josh playing "So lonely" in the Olimpya show in Paris. It´s awesome, worth watching
I’ll check it out, thanks for the rec!
@DimitriFantini You're welcome!! Thank you!! I have learned so much about Stewart style in your last video, and now with this. All the rudiments and ways to apply that to a song, hi hat fills and overdubs in toms. I thank you a lot!
Sua caixa tem um som lindo
I would like to see you break down some indie drummers like Damon Che (Don Caballero) and Zachary Barocas (Jawbox)
I was in my mid 20s and an avid drummer, gigging and giving lessons and trying to make a career of it somehow...lol and i saw josh on the cover of modern drummer and he was like 16 im thinking whos this cat think he is?? Hes the cat that was super talented worked really hard, kept his nose clean and has one of the most sought after chairs ever. Congrats young man....lol.
I’ve never seen that modern drummer cover!
Freese is so underrated, but a lot of great musicians know exactly what he is capable of!
Outstanding channel. Subscribed.
Ah thank you Harry!!!
Again, in the right place now:
Great breakdown video! 🫶🏻🙏🏻
Really like these!
Glad you like them!
@dimitrifantini , Matt Cameron please!
New subscriber here. Great stuff shared here on your channel!
JF is incredible there's no doubt!
You asked for some suggestions so here's one I have.
How about a breakdown of Gary Novak? A powerful monster on the instrument as well.
Thx
Welcome to the channel!! Gary Novak is incredible, thanks for the suggestion!
You should definitely check out The Ocean - Jurassic | Cretaceous (Drum Play-through by Paul Seidel). Amazing drummer that is not as well known.
Your snare has a beautiful song.
Why thank you!
JF is just world class. Loved the vid. Since you had some nine inch nails, do one on Ilan Ruben. That guy is incredible.
So glad you dig the vid Eddie! Yes I will have to do something on Ilan… any specifics you recommend?
@@DimitriFantiniNIN Tension live, dude is a human drum machine
I like this dude......Subbed.
Edit - I have a suggestion.....Hes untapped....no one does videos on him.......Ben Harclerode (I think thats how you spell his last name........he was a drummer for Whitechapel.........A jazz drummer playing metal is always a great thing to see........I think people are sleeping on him.........he may also be sleeping on himself......he doesnt do social media it seems.
Thanks for the suggestion! I don’t know Ben, I will look into him :)
Thanks for the video. And man, you should listen to NIN
I knowwwwww
He was epic in A Perfect Circle.
🔥 absolutely!!!!
I even heard a smidge of Neil Peart on there .. JF is amazing 🥁🇦🇺
Good ear!
@@DimitriFantini huge fan of Moving Pictures album (and all Rush). I’m listening to the Rick Beato interview with JF ; I’m sure you’ve listened to it ~ soooo good. God bless you friend ~ 🇦🇺🥁 🎶
Which cymbals do you have in this set Dimitri? The trash is some Pst and the crash is an Alpha?
Hey! For this specific setup I’m using:
15” Masters Dark Hi Hats
18” and 20” Traditionals Crashes
18” PSTX Swiss Thin Crash
10” Dark Energy Splash
21” Dark Energy Dark Dry Ride
@@DimitriFantini Awesome kit! Thanks for spend time responding! I appreciate!
He is amazing
Thanx alot for the video
Josh is so amazing
We would love to watching u doing review and explains on matt Cameron of Soundgarden pj and Stephan
Perkins of Jan's addiction ,porno for pyros
Thanx again for all of your hard work I am loving this channel
Thank you Ben that really means a lot!!! Glad you’re here!
Steve Perkins is awesome, also his work for Banyon.
Josh is excellent and a perfect fit for harder rock bands like the Foo Fighters. His playing fit into what Sting was doing with a more harder rock take on his songs in concert. However, not my favorite Sting concert stuff to watch and hear but still pretty decent. Vinnie will always be the perfect fit for Sting. Manu was perfect too.
I will need to do something on Manu!
@@DimitriFantini Yes!
Josh is a monster player.
🔥 🔥
Best all-around drummer on the planet. Nothing can't play and do it with perfection. Not called the human metronome for nothing.
I’ve been studying him since I was a wee lad!! absolutely love his drumming :)
Check out Daniel Tracy! He's a absolute beast!
Will do!!
Next! David Lovering from PIXIES!
I LOVE DWUMS
1:11 does typical Brann Dailor things))))also a NIN quotes DG
He’s a human metronome, plays interesting stuff and is professional.
There’s tons of albums from the 90’s and 2000’s with this guy on it. Between him and Matt Chamberlin they have a gigantic swath of the LA studio scene.
I'd love to see Jerry Gaskill of King's X.Very solid, underrated and unconventional.
So, I’m not some sort of music whisperer, I called Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood to win American Idol, and when I saw Josh filling shoes for the Taylor memorial, I knew Josh would be the next drummer.
There's nothing worse than seeing a local band that's actually pretty good, but their drummer doesn't hit the snare consistently and the music loses its drive and feel.
Tyler Smith from Eagle Twin
