This song never really got a lot of air play but I consider it the last great song zep did. Its phenomenal, IMO, and like a lot of other songs zep wrote, displays a timeless sophistication that just “takes you there”! I originally had a bit of an issue with the staccato drum section but tolerated it because the rest of the song is so good. That intro grabs you and pulls you in, the guitar layering is so well done, the solo fantastic, and the outro so foreboding. Plants voice wasn’t the greatest but the lyrics were spot on... JPJ and Bonham were fantastic. I’ve learned to play it... now I just need Robert Plant to come to my house and sing along😀 BTW, nice pace on the lesson.
Parris Gjerde I totally agree with you. The average Person just thinks Stairway, but fora guitarist to me this is the song. I think that Page wrote this over a number of years but finally commuting it to tape. You can hear hints of the song in the live version of Dazed and Confused. Glad you enjoyed the lesson. Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already done so I always appreciate the support.
@@GuitarMates Ya this song is the sort of thing only Page would do. From that E/F# opening (which to my ear is reminiscent of something a piano player might come up with) bursting into this vibrant living energetic thing for 10+ minutes... inspiring for sure - esp from a writing perspective. Keep up the great work brother. Subscribed.
This is fantastic, maybe the best Zeppelin guitar lesson on TH-cam. It deserves far more likes and comments than it has so far. There are several guys doing Zepp lessons who haven't taken this on - this seems to be the only one. With the separate session on the solo, it comes to almost an hour of help on this epic song. Everyone has their own favorites, but I think with all the different parts that need to be learned and then put together with the solo, it is Page's most involved song to learn - even for someone like me who is a long time hobby player that has been working off and on since the 1970's on Zepp songs (back before TH-cam and tab books, when we had to try to figure all this out by ear).
@@johnpoffenbarger8688 yeah I remember those days Stairway to heaven was one of the first songs I tried to play(1976) I'm still trying to get the lead down😏

Thanks for the tutorial. I agree, this might be the greatest hit from LZ! I clearly remember, some 25 years ago I found Presence album in my father's cassette box. He never really listened to it, prefered Queen, Jimi, etc. But I immediately stuck to it, while I was cleaning the huge windows in our house. :-D So, Presence forever!

Excellent breakdown of the parts. Only thing at the being, Page never moves his hand. Somehow he plays those pull offs on the D staying in place to play the F# chords.

4:20 that part there, it is 3rds, right? (I don't know music theory, sorry) Around that time, 1976, Michael Schenker was already around, the song Doctor Doctor comes to mind where he does that in the live performances (dual guitars played as one using 3rds) Do you think Schenker influenced Page somehow around the period? Songs like Lights Out and Rock Bottom were already released at the time I think

Mr. Skype do you use any software to slow down the music and loop it? I use Transcribe! I'm hearing something different on the opening riff then what you are playing..Doesn't really make much of a difference. It is a very hard riff to play at tempo. I'm sure Page didn't play it the same every time who knows? Give it a listen again slow it down to 50 percent. You will be surprised what you pick up when you slow it down.
Hi Gitaa on some song I use transcribe as you mention. In the case of this song I didn't I just listened and worked out from what I heard. I do agree that you hear all kinds of things when you slow the track down. I will check out what you say. Hope you enjoyed the lesson.
When you play that chord for the night fret to the 7th fret when you get to the seventh fret it should be two strokes. That's the melody. So the 7th fret one stroke the 9th fret 2 strokes. That's the melody Any three notes played in the sequence that's pleasing to the ear Melody
So were you able to look at the video. and see the melody being played. It's funny when I see someone else play the same rhythm, and they only play 2/3 of the melody. I hear the third note of the melody being played deep in my head. With all do respect do you see and hear what I mean. most people can not explain what a Melody is.
I'll bet he wished he could just say the 'notes' instead of explaining tabs'. Tabs were written in guitar rags 'practicing musician' early mid 80s. Learning songs from book with tabs is great in your room. Although explaining tabs takes forever it's way slow. Doesn't matter who it is long process.

Wade Holloway Yes, listen to the San Francisco part in Earls Court 1975, it has a lot of Achilles’ riffs

Quite possible.
The bits where he slides down are minor triads. First, minor 3rd, 5th. Accompanied by a low E drone.
