      I heard that some journalist asked Paul Mc Cartney how it felt to be the best songwriter of all times. He allegedly replied: "Well, I don´t know. You better ask Neil Finn." or something along these lines... :-P

    Neil Finn is one of my guitar heroes...most of my guitar influences are strong melodic rhythm players...I discovered after years of playing, that all the time I was using up learning solos, I could be playing a song. Once I got over the ego element of trying to play solo parts of songs, I felt liberated. I realised I have always been drawn to the percussiveness of rhythm guitar parts.

    It's beautiful how perfectly their voices harmonise. My favourite band since the 80s!

    • @butting23
      @butting23 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Both Finns are incredible harmonisers. The best harmonies I heard in my life were at one of Tim's album launches, upstairs pub on Dominion Rd, Neil jumped up with him for a couple of songs. Just the two of them, each with a Maton, and the harmonies... out of this world.
      Can be easy to forget that one of the things that set Crowded House apart were how incredibly well Nick and Hessie matched that: as a trio, CH were as good as the two brothers who'd been doing it from childhood. Have a glorious memory from the second CH tour: end of the song they held "Better be home..." and then paused. All of Founders sang back "SOOOOON" with a delicious cacophony, notes all over the place, and then when everyone was done: Neil, Nick, and Hessie bring it back in, just the one word to finish with, where it should have been, exactly on pitch, achingly beautiful, magically pure. So very very good.
      (one hell of a night, that: Paul Ubana Jones, Schnell Fenster, Crowded House, and then an unbilled Split Enz reunion. damn, that was a good one.)

    • @pubbets7290
      @pubbets7290 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@butting23 that would have been amazing! I saw one of the Enz reuninon tours in Brisbane - would have been early 2000s I think.. Not sure of the exact date. Definitely a life-affirming moment! I discovered Split Enz in 1987 as a very awkward teenager and became OBSESSED right through till my early 20s. I still love the music today, but that period I was totally in love with the whole Split Enz vibe. Every piece of art, every school project, every story and poem was based on the Enz output!
      Some day I'd love to meet Neil and Tim and tell them 'thank you' for saving my life in that difficult stage. I'd also love to do the same to Peter who ran the fan club back then. I was a subscriber and it was like Christmas whenever a package or letter arrived from Friends of the Enz.

    Saw them in Manchester (UK) a few weeks ago. By far the best gig I have been to in my life - and I'm nearer 60 than 50. Amazingly well-crafted songs, played by brilliant musicians, incorporating beautiful harmonies... all played with a smile on their faces.

    Some people were surprised when Mick Fleetwood brought Neil Finn into Fleetwood Mac, but to me it was just such an inspired move. I think whereas everybody and his/her dog is a fan of The Beatles (to the point where I actually play down my fandom), Crowded House offer a place where real music fans can revel. They have a rich history going back to their roots of Split Enz and the evolution through The Mullanes.

    Loved how they talked about that bass riff that Nick does on Don't Dream it's Over. Always liked that to start the song. I was hoping they would talk about the bass line on the last chorus when Nick plays an F to G instead of the regular G# to A# (Bflat) on the Hey now, hey now. It just hits the spot there. Very ingenious.
