  • Breakbeats are so much fun. Modern music has transformed them into something entirely new. I'll show you how I like to integrate some drum 'n' bass into my drumming.

    This was such an elegant explanation of exactly how jungle and drum and bass is reverse engineered to be played by humans and on the drum set. It's actually exactly what I've been exploring, but unable to describe as simply and straight forward as you have. I'm finding this style of linear playing becoming almost its own genre and I've been exploring how adding more rest areas or "white space" can help give the quick rhythmic sections a more intricate and sped-up effect due to the contrast in quietness. You've gained yourself a subscription; mostly because of the excellent description, but also because of that voice!

    I actually like these beats at the slightly slower tempo. I know the other musicians drive this, but I like the space a little. Good review!

      The Amen break shares a lot with drum groove for "Cold Sweat", a James Brown song from 1967. Cold Sweat runs at 90-something BPM. A lot of early funk has a more spacious beat, while also retaining the mild syncopation.

    Good stuff , a fun video. If you look at your hi-hat hand you fulcrum is (squeezed) between thumb and index finger and you are using middle finger to work the stick. I have been working on move that to a more open fulcum between thumba nd midle finger and then using ring and little finger on the stick, mix this in the som e wrist action and you have a much more relaxed flowing hand. You can point your index finger out so you know you are using it when praticing.

    bro so helpful 🙏 Im trying to learn this one jungle song I heard on some random youtube mix, and I noticed that the high hat and snare never coincide as they would in the case of that simplified ahmen break with straight eighth notes on high hat. like it was alternating hands the way you are doing it here, plus some fancy paradiddle stuff between snare and hat. thank you

    You say the longer you do it the harder it becomes and to do a live show of jungle or drum and Bass is impossible. With good technique you shouldn’t be expelling expending much energy at all it’s just about practice and technique technique technique technique technique

  • @alnewick
    @alnewick 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah I’ve never watched all of it you bye you understand a couple of things about the origins of jungle and drum and Bass but you really really can’t play yet man. It’s bad form to be teaching before you are have mastered your instrument. It’s just a tacky. And yes before you say anything Like you don’t have Drum videos on your TH-cam page what do you know? I would have to say I’m about 15 years ahead of you and you should really take my advice

    • @johnnybdrums
      @johnnybdrums  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Wow, I never thought of that. You're right, I'm not a master of the instrument and I don't know everything; therefore I don't know anything and am totally incapable of helping anyone learn.
      The fact that you felt the need to leave three separate comments says a lot more about you and your motivation than it does about me and mine. Sure, I'm working too hard. Sure, my technique is sloppy. I'm learning, and other people can learn with me. That's what I'm here for. Not to be insecure and competitive and put people down. To provide useful information for those who seek it.

      I learned a huge amount from this video. I don’t know why you don’t seem to have the ability or desire, as someone who is (ostensibly) a veteran musician, to help lift other musicians up, but - if you can bear to take advice from such a snotty neophyte as myself - in my experience, sharing the knowledge I do have with others has been infinitely more rewarding than tacking dismal little screeds onto the hard work of those who may not have yet been blessed with years of experience. Hope you can feel less lonely soon.
