What was cool is Sammy actually played his guitar. Then under an hour and half the Dallas Police Department shut'em down. Before that take note of how the crowd was surging forward, I ended going back by the sound scaffolding to keep from being crushed. Then after that drunk on the light pole fell off on to his head. The show done!!! The ambulance had to part the street like the Red Sea. Ethier way, it was something I WON'T forget. Eddie will be missed, though his musicianship will live on! Everyone says that about their generation and their music. As an 80s kid, this stuff was great, but I still would have loved to see Hendrix, the Grateful Dead and some of those bands in their heyday.

Just saw Sammy, Michael, Santriani in Indianapolis Friday and it was an amazing walk down memory lane. Satriani was amazing and was not attempting to be Eddie but really paid tribute to his legacy. Will always miss Eddie and Alex and was lucky to have seen them multiple times…equally thankful for the moment with Sammy and Michael. We are not on this earth forever everyone. If you love Van Halen you owe it to yourself to spend this two and a half hours celebrating this musicians and all they brought to our lives.

The show only lasted give or take an hour and the show was shut down by the cops. I waited ALL day to see this concert. I WAS front row but could NOT handle being pushed against the barricades. If you watch the crowd there was a guy on the light pole. Well, he fell off, being drunk crashing down on his head, not a good thing. It took the ambulance a while to part the crowd just to get to him. Man, sometimes I miss being 20, not a care, my long hair, and having fun like that‼️ 🤙🏻 The last song brings happy tears to my eyes.
This gig is one of those we should show our kids when we want to explain rock and roll to them: get up on a stage, no fancy lights, and simply kiss ass....what a great vibe this has....

All my adult life I worked, no real health problems. Now my feet are fucked up, arthritis is creeping in, need a knee replacement. What the hell? I don't want this shit, This isn't who I am! Where did my 30-something self go? Where did 30 years go?! Guess I have to fix what I can to feel better, change the attitude. Gotta say, Eddy embraced life & got so much more from it than most of us do.
I love how Sammy is SO positive! He very often says things like "oh everything's alright, huh," and commenting how real and amazing everything is in the very moment! Constantly celebrating music, his fans, his band, the moment, and life itself! (Also being generous and compassionate towards his fans.) and OF COURSE I love my main hero Eddie Van Halen! Amazingly positive person as well! And the most innovative, revolutionary, and influential guitarist who ever lived (in so many ways!) Plus this is amazing footage, and the sound quality is AMAZING; for the time especially! I"m so thank full to be able to take this in. The band plays AMAZINGLY light, and with such great enthusiastic energy! Simply amazing! ! ! ! What a great way to spend Christmas!

Got out of work early to make it down a few hours before show started. Had a great spot under one of those trees standing on a planter box so no one in front of me. One of my favorite concerts ever because of the whole vibe that day. Everyone having fun and enjoying one of the best bands ever!

I was at this event. It was during the week and announced at the last minute in the radio. One of the most amazing concerts ever - the timing, the huge crowd and just Hagar and Van Halen. Wow. What a piece of history. Unforgettable.
You can just tell that those guys were in top form here both musically and personally. Effortless perfect, fun, live and real rock n roll. When a band has that type of chemistry it is undeniable.

While listening to Q102 one sunny day in 1991, I learned about the free Van Halen concert in the West End. Next thing I know, my sister and I are in the crowd enjoying the music. We were literally almost crushed alive by the force of the crowd. No regrets though, it was an amazing day. Thank you for an amazing day Eddie, I will never forget that wonderful day. RIP
Quique Dillon Yea, it was a crazy day. They announced the event on the radio and I got in the car and headed to the West End. When I got up that day I had no idea I would be at a VH concert. Cops shut the event down, this kind of thing would *never* happen today.
Here's irony ..... I graduated high school in 1990 in Houston, went to Dallas in 1991 and missed this concert by at least 2 weeks. Bad timing. I live about 15 minutes from the west end now ( 75231 ) and will be moving back to Houston in 2 weeks exactly on ....... Halloween........... Never did get to see Van Halen live in my life time... :(
I was just on a tour run working for Vince Neil and we were opening for Sammy and the circle and I can tell you Sammy STILL sounds this good if not better now...and he is also a very nice down to earth guy...so is Michael Anthony...serious talent and good guys to boot while I was around them...
I’ve met both Sammy & Mike. Couldn’t agree more. I met Mike’s bass tech Kevin Dugan a few months ago and he couldn’t say enough nice things about Miley and he’s been working for him for 40 years now!
Awesome show for sure, we were about mid way back on the right side of the stage. Traffic was insane leaving. I personally liked seeing them on the 1984 tour better.
You can see the sound system that they're using and by 1991 modern recording technology was pretty good so it's no wonder this should sound near their studio recording, Eddie did use cranked up amp's on the studio too in order top get the same live sound on the records !?
TH-cam has done a great job with all the free music, I am blown away all the time on TH-cam and FREE. People bash Sammy as a weak link, but I love Sammy and he can play guitar too. Without Sammy Van Halen would not have been as successful. Difficult to find a singer that meshes, most groups suffer post original singer.
I was at this Dallas show. It was at a restaurant / bar area in the West End. It was a free show put on by VH for having to cancel a previously scheduled show in Dallas. They announced the show on the radio mid-morning. It started a few hours later. When I arrived there were thousands of fans already there waiting for the show. They ended early due to safety concerns. Great memories.
The previous show wasn’t cancelled. It was the ‘88 Texxas Jam. I was there. Sammy lost his voice. Did his best but he announced to the crowd that they would come back and do a free show. True to their word!
Teasers played all week prior to the show in mystery clips on Q102. But damn well worth it! We rushed from Fort Worth to no miss this show. Well worth it...won't forget it!

Not sure about the Texxas Jam but I'm positive Sammy's last Solo show at Reunion Arena his voice was cracking and he said he would come back and make it up to us. Then he went over to Van Halen and they came and played this free show. Yes it was an awesome event.

Absolutely agree. I saw them in Dallas (1993) and they were equally great. Hard to believe that Sammy was 42-43 and the others were late 30’s in this video. Look at the energy and passion they poured into this performance... easily matched (or surpassed) Pearl Jam or any of the other grunge bands that ruled early-90’s radio. These “old fellas” roared. And Sammy’s pre-show interview: I’m all for equality, but the world needs more unapologetic, alpha males singing good times rock.✌️

Can we just take a moment to appreciate each individual musician here & what they each bring to the table here to make a collective experience. My god, Sammy's vocals live are just W O W hitting those high notes and screaming? How did the man NOT destroy his voice. I'm more of a Van Halen fan, rather than Van Hagar, but that was my loss because they were still awesome, just in a slightly different way, with Sammy.
I agree. That is why this band is timeless. Their immense talent just blended so well together. I appreciate both Van Halen and Van Hagar, though I feel like Sammy allowed the band to develop their music more.

Now lemme ask you something about that - hopefully you're a guitarist. What exactly is Eddie DOING with the drill? Surely he's not spinning its head on the strings? They'd get some shitty smoothness on them, and would probably break quicker. Or is he spinning the head near the pickups? I know the visual effect looks cool, but what exactly is he touching on the guitar with the spinning drill head?

We were playing, and I always like to play in the control room because I hate wearing headphones. Ken Deanne, who was my maintenance tech for my studio at the time, happened to be replacing a piece of outboard gear behind me while we were playing. He left the drill laying right in front of me as he was going to grab a replacement piece of gear. As I am sure you know, a guitar pickup is very similar to a microphone. I happened to grab the drill, and by sheer luck it was in the same key as the song. So I asked Alex to start “Poundcake” again from the beginning, and I used the drill over the pickup and scraped it on the strings for the intro. I also used it for a second or two during the song’s solo. It’s just one of those funny unplanned things that happen every so often. Thank you for compiling this video. I grew up w VH. My 1st concert was the Monkees with Weird Al. Then Poison opened for RATT. I was a kid and never able to afford many concerts nor did I really understand what they were all about. The same family that started me on them went to the Van Halen concert back then. I don't remember why I didn't go but pretty sure it was because money was tight for my mom. This video brought back memories as if I was there. I'm a huge follower of Samy now as he not only is a great front man, but businessman and humanitarian. Thanks again and look fwd to watching more!! Coolest part of this vid for me today... My wife and I just got back 3 days ago from buying her new BASS guitar. She literally bought the lesser BLACK Stingray MusicMan that is exact copy of the Michael Anthony bass in this video!!! Hagar turned into an asshole. He violated the two most important tules of rock: 1. NEVER say a bad thing about a former band mate (especially a band mate that made you rich beyond your wildest dreams). 2. NEVER disrespect your fans, their city, and their brewery. In 2007, a very drunk and obnoxious Hagar amd MA got booed off the stage at the Fox in St. Louis after Hagar's chilish rant about Anhueser Busch decided against brewing his beer idea. When he made fun of AB employees in the audience, we had enough. Hagar deserved an ass-kicking which he later recognized and issued a hollow apology.

When it comes to rock, they were old dudes in '91. Led Zeppelin reached greatness when they were 20, sold out every show for 11 years, sold over 300 million records, and moved on to solo projects before they were 30. Van Halen wanted to be like Led Zeppelin but they weren't good enough. Eddie claimed he was better than Jimmy Page but he wasn't good enough and his sound wasn't heavy enough. VH couldn't sell half as many records or attract audiences half as big.

Great times at West End back in the day. Was in that crowd. Also saw Kansas at a West End free concert. On Thursdays they did nickel long necks. Miss those days.

Yeah no kidding the sound is incredible! How could a live recording sound this good? Now that you mention it a lot of the old Van Halen concert footage is amazing in its clarity - they obviously had top notch people doing both the video and audio work.

Just saw Sammy, Michael, Santriani in Indianapolis Friday and it was an amazing walk down memory lane.
Satriani was amazing and was not attempting to be Eddie but really paid tribute to his legacy.
Will always miss Eddie and Alex and was lucky to have seen them multiple times…equally thankful for the moment with Sammy and Michael.
We are not on this earth forever everyone.
If you love Van Halen you owe it to yourself to spend this two and a half hours celebrating this musicians and all they brought to our lives.

I was 20 years old in 1991 right in the heart of Dallas Texas my HOME town.
The show only lasted give or take an hour and the show was shut down by the cops. I waited ALL day to see this concert.
I WAS front row but could NOT handle being pushed against the barricades.
If you watch the crowd there was a guy on the light pole. Well, he fell off, being drunk crashing down on his head, not a good thing.
It took the ambulance a while to part the crowd just to get to him.
Man, sometimes I miss being 20, not a care, my long hair, and having fun like that‼️ 🤙🏻
The last song brings happy tears to my eyes.

I love how Sammy is SO positive! He very often says things like "oh everything's alright, huh," and commenting how real and amazing everything is in the very moment! Constantly celebrating music, his fans, his band, the moment, and life itself! (Also being generous and compassionate towards his fans.)

While listening to Q102 one sunny day in 1991, I learned about the free Van Halen concert in the West End.
Next thing I know, my sister and I are in the crowd enjoying the music. We were literally almost crushed alive by the force of the crowd. No regrets though, it was an amazing day.

Here's irony ..... I graduated high school in 1990 in Houston, went to Dallas in 1991 and missed this concert by at least 2 weeks. Bad timing. I live about 15 minutes from the west end now ( 75231 ) and will be moving back to Houston in 2 weeks exactly on ....... Halloween........... Never did get to see Van Halen live in my life time... :(

I was just on a tour run working for Vince Neil and we were opening for Sammy and the circle and I can tell you Sammy STILL sounds this good if not better now...and he is also a very nice down to earth guy...so is Michael Anthony...serious talent and good guys to boot while I was around them...
I’ve met both Sammy & Mike. Couldn’t agree more. I met Mike’s bass tech Kevin Dugan a few months ago and he couldn’t say enough nice things about Miley and he’s been working for him for 40 years now!

Awesome show for sure, we were about mid way back on the right side of the stage. Traffic was insane leaving. I personally liked seeing them on the 1984 tour better.

You can see the sound system that they're using and by 1991 modern recording technology was pretty good so it's no wonder this should sound near their studio recording, Eddie did use cranked up amp's on the studio too in order top get the same live sound on the records !?

TH-cam has done a great job with all the free music, I am blown away all the time on TH-cam and FREE. People bash Sammy as a weak link, but I love Sammy and he can play guitar too. Without Sammy Van Halen would not have been as successful. Difficult to find a singer that meshes, most groups suffer post original singer.

I was at this Dallas show. It was at a restaurant / bar area in the West End. It was a free show put on by VH for having to cancel a previously scheduled show in Dallas. They announced the show on the radio mid-morning. It started a few hours later. When I arrived there were thousands of fans already there waiting for the show. They ended early due to safety concerns. Great memories.

Teasers played all week prior to the show in mystery clips on Q102. But damn well worth it! We rushed from Fort Worth to no miss this show. Well worth it...won't forget it!

An impromptu concert that came off as a full on production. This is one of the greatest live concert videos ever. Playing in the middle of town amongst the buildings and all the people with a perfect sound.
It was the opposite of "impromptu". It was a full production show.

Not sure about the Texxas Jam but I'm positive Sammy's last Solo show at Reunion Arena his voice was cracking and he said he would come back and make it up to us. Then he went over to Van Halen and they came and played this free show. Yes it was an awesome event.

Absolutely agree. I saw them in Dallas (1993) and they were equally great. Hard to believe that Sammy was 42-43 and the others were late 30’s in this video. Look at the energy and passion they poured into this performance... easily matched (or surpassed) Pearl Jam or any of the other grunge bands that ruled early-90’s radio. These “old fellas” roared.

Now lemme ask you something about that - hopefully you're a guitarist. What exactly is Eddie DOING with the drill? Surely he's not spinning its head on the strings? They'd get some shitty smoothness on them, and would probably break quicker. Or is he spinning the head near the pickups? I know the visual effect looks cool, but what exactly is he touching on the guitar with the spinning drill head?

"The drill on the “Poundcake” was a complete fluke/creative accident. We were playing, and I always like to play in the control room because I hate wearing headphones. Ken Deanne, who was my maintenance tech for my studio at the time, happened to be replacing a piece of outboard gear behind me while we were playing. He left the drill laying right in front of me as he was going to grab a replacement piece of gear. As I am sure you know, a guitar pickup is very similar to a microphone. I happened to grab the drill, and by sheer luck it was in the same key as the song. So I asked Alex to start “Poundcake” again from the beginning, and I used the drill over the pickup and scraped it on the strings for the intro. I also used it for a second or two during the song’s solo. It’s just one of those funny unplanned things that happen every so often. Since it was on the record, I ended up using the same drill every time we played the song live."

Thank you for compiling this video. I grew up w VH. My 1st concert was the Monkees with Weird Al. Then Poison opened for RATT. I was a kid and never able to afford many concerts nor did I really understand what they were all about. The same family that started me on them went to the Van Halen concert back then. I don't remember why I didn't go but pretty sure it was because money was tight for my mom. This video brought back memories as if I was there. I'm a huge follower of Samy now as he not only is a great front man, but businessman and humanitarian. Thanks again and look fwd to watching more!! Coolest part of this vid for me today...

VH was never in the same league as Led Zeppelin but they had some brilliant at moments.
Hagar turned into an asshole. He violated the two most important tules of rock: 1. NEVER say a bad thing about a former band mate (especially a band mate that made you rich beyond your wildest dreams). 2. NEVER disrespect your fans, their city, and their brewery. In 2007, a very drunk and obnoxious Hagar amd MA got booed off the stage at the Fox in St. Louis after Hagar's chilish rant about Anhueser Busch decided against brewing his beer idea. When he made fun of AB employees in the audience, we had enough. Hagar deserved an ass-kicking which he later recognized and issued a hollow apology.
Thank you for the great music and that perpetually happy and genuine smile, King Edward. We love and miss you. Wolfie has all the skills and pure talent to carry the family name. We'll never forget you, Ed!

I was there Dallas West End I was also at the cotton bowl two years before this show when Sammy Hagar loss his voice and said they would come back and give us a free show. So here it is

I remember being at this Concert..... We drove from Duncanville and made it to downtown in I beleive less then 15minutes lol!!!!! I wish we could go back to 1991 because it was a GREAT time.....

@@magicmike6961 It was in front of the old West End Marketplace. During the 80-90's it was known for it's Clubs & restraunts/shopping and Nightlife. The Grassy Knoll was around the Corner from the West End within walking distance.

It was when the idea of Trump being the president was totally laughable and everyone HATED him.and there was a guy there and he said to a couple of these young black guys, "excuse me brothers, Im not from around here, Im visiting from another country. you're americans right? Do you know if Donald Trump will be coming through here at any stage?"
after that it was a blur, from pissing myself laughing so hard, but I think I saw one of the guys holding his gut so they didnt split and his friend kinda stumbled backwards and tripped onto the ground. You know how those AA people go "Oh no he DIDN'T!"

When it comes to rock, they were old dudes in '91. Led Zeppelin reached greatness when they were 20, sold out every show for 11 years, sold over 300 million records, and moved on to solo projects before they were 30. Van Halen wanted to be like Led Zeppelin but they weren't good enough. Eddie claimed he was better than Jimmy Page but he wasn't good enough and his sound wasn't heavy enough. VH couldn't sell half as many records or attract audiences half as big.
I know man. shit happens quick. I saw the rolling stones when they were around 50's....I was like "those old dudes rock pretty good." smh…..I'm now around that age myself!

Great times at West End back in the day. Was in that crowd. Also saw Kansas at a West End free concert. On Thursdays they did nickel long necks. Miss those days.
This was the show they promised to come back so. Hagar’s voice was shot at the Monsters of Rock at the Cotton Bowl in 1988. He said they would make it up and did they! Awesome .

Yeah no kidding the sound is incredible! How could a live recording sound this good? Now that you mention it a lot of the old Van Halen concert footage is amazing in its clarity - they obviously had top notch people doing both the video and audio work.

sammy didnt want to be at par with the band, he wants to be the top dog, which only degrades the quality of what makes VH is, years later it came out, dave though came back but was way past his effective antics which what VH was..
I was at this Dallas show. It was at a restaurant / bar area in the West End. It was a free show put on by VH for having to cancel a previously scheduled show in Dallas. They announced the show on the radio mid-morning. It started a few hours later. When I arrived there were thousands of fans already there waiting for the show. They ended early due to safety concerns. Great memories.
And to think if DLR hadn’t quit there wouldn’t have been Sammy.
