      Also, in DOOM AIs are pretty advanced so I think there would be an AI that would handle the gun and the crew would give the final authorization to fire. Perhaps it has quad tracks because it used to be a wheeled vehicle that got turned into a SPG and they replaced the wheels with tracks to reduce ground pressure, since they are fighting a war and I believe losses are high, it would make sense for the UAC to adapt ther vehicles to desperately increase avaiable firepower

      What I'm thinking is, judging by the technology used on the Ion catapult that was meant as a defense system for UAC's bases on Mars, that the weapon on the tank is indeed a type of Ion Catapult-smaller one, but no less devastating more than likely, and probably enough to fry some demons.

    The tank's main gun does indeed bear some resemblance to the BFG 10000 (with the same rails along a large barrel and general shape for that section that releases wasted energy on the BFG 10K when it fires), which I believe was a said to be particle cannon centered around the BFG 9000, which was an argent energy launcher. By that logic, it's likely some kind of energy weapon, with the barrel serving to energize and accelerate what it fires. However, that doesn't seem much like a close-range weapon, more like something which sits behind the forward fighting units and hits the bigger targets, particularly the more armored ones like cyber mancubi or tyrants. That would also likely explain the lack of machine guns and smoke/infantry grenade launchers, since it's not meant to be close enough for them to be very useful, especially with friendly troops ahead. I'd think it would have a decent drop on whatever it fires, too, given how its turret is aiming, so even more reason for it to not have as much armor (and weight, making the tracks a _bit_ better) or more direct-fire weapons. Its internals might very well be only the main turret and scarcely enough room for anything else, with how big the thing is, but I could also see it being possible that gun emplacements and maybe even the turret itself could be remotely controlled from another position, if it had any.

    Tbf, if it shot a BFG variant munition, that would be a pretty effective anti-personnel weapon. Those green bolts reaching out to caress dozens of demons lovingly would make up for lack of automated turrets, though having some wouldn have hurt. Also, it looked like there were two view ports, so a possible driver-gunner combo.
    Another thing you didn't know is that A.I.s besides VEGA did exist. Hayden had the best ones working on developing weapons.

    It's either a SPG - Self-propelled gun/artillery or SPAA - Self-propelled anti-air. But the lack of mobility and armor make me think it's a SPAA, the problem is that thing doesn't have a turret, and the gun depression is too low(can't even reach flat 0 degree) so it "maybe" a tank destroyer(?). But considering Hayden designed BFG 10000 to shoot couple cacodemons in the air this explanation make more sense

  • @chloekaftan
    @chloekaftan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    if it uses electric induction motors then those can just be mounted directly into the track assembly, cutting down on complexity otherwise caused by a power transfer shaft, if each of the 4 quad tracks had their own motors it would make the design a lot simpler and more modular, making easy replacement of defective or destroyed parts quick and simple. heat dispersion could also be done on each tracks wheel hub, integrating a heat exchanger and heat sink into the hub assembly could manage heat efficiently while eliminating the need for a centralized cooling system, it does add to the part count but should only marginally increase costs.
    also quad tracks dont necessarily need to be wide, the Case IH Quad-Trac and the John Deere 9RX both use very narrow quad tracks at factory stock (sure they can be upgraded with wider tracks, but the point is that they can operate just fine without it, and yes these tractors are road legal.), these tractors may not be quite as heavy as a typical MBT but it can be argued that the tank in this video may have been built with materials that are lighter than what we currently have available.

    If I were building a electric tank I wouldn't have a centralized engine like you assume, I would have a electric motor in every drive sprocket and maybe even every roadwheel. It'll ensure redundancy and help eliminate the need for cooling.
    The power pack would then just be a huge battery/generator.
    It also reduces the complexity of the hinges tracks quite a lot.

    It seems it may be using argent energy instead, which could also be used in the weapon akin to the BFG 9k and 10k.
    As to WHY that would be an obvious risk-
    Argent energy isn't exactly known to be stable once containment is damaged. Plus, it seems the power cell is literally out in the open with thin armor over itself.

    *Tank. In Doom*
    *Right*
    While having tank to support infantry is very nice, I don't think the condition of Earth's terrain during Hell invasion will be a good place for tank, due to.... well, if you play the game you will understand.
    Actually, stuff like *powered armor* will be pefect for the kind of war humanity in Doom universe found themselve in. According to what people who played the game tell me, Demon force invade Earth via teleportation ( Sort of like Half Life's Earth fall during 7 Hours War), so there's pretty much no define frontline or rear area to rally. So armor won't be the best idea imo, but infantry, and power armor is perfect for providing direct support firepower.
    In fact, one of the most important mission the Doomguy are doing during the game, is to kill some kind of priest that holf the key to allow teleportation of Demon force during the invasion. By killing all of them, Demon lost their main advantage, and allowing humanity a breathing space to regroup, rebuild and strike back. ( I actually like it that way. Yes, you are playing a 80s era muscular badass deamon killing machine, but you are just one man against an army. So you are gonna need other support beside your pocket weapon locker.) ;)

      Powered armor and exoskeletons are kind of obsolete by that point. Hayden had cyborg commandos at his disposal. Those guys stormed Hell to steal Doomguys sarcophagus and also were capable enough to stop demon invasion on Mars on their own hence why demons made a deal with Olivia Pierce to kill them with Hayden's killswitch in the first place. All weapons you use in Doom 2016 except BFG and chainsaw are THEIR standart weapons. And cybernetics? That same tech was used to creat Cyberdemon in Doom and Hunters in Doom Eternal. They weren't slouches:D
      Pity that we didn't see neither them, nor Hayden in action.

With anti-infantry turrets being vehicle mounted, heavier iterations of the plasma rifle and heavy cannon/assault rifle.

  • @accywacky2699
    @accywacky2699 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    loved the vid in general, tiny bit of (what I hope is) constructive critique. You mention during the vid how smoke launchers wouldnt be much use against demons... but what about using frag grenades instead as an anti-imp measure for when demons get close. That's exactly the kind of thinking I want to encourage as I feel some of your vids dont seem to take into account the circumstances of the universe the tanks are from.
    Regarding the ai/onboard automation, the human armies demonstrate high degree automation in their weapon emplacements, the two dual barrel turrets that doomslayer co-opts during one level both appear to be completely unmanned by humans... and yet they have been firing on (presumably demonic) foes all along despite not having operators. While a fully sentient/alive type ai like Doomslayer's only friend (rip daisy), it seems quite probable that weak ai capable of helping a downright minimalistic number of humans operate a tank or mecha is well within their abilities. Also, while the ai on mars required that whole facility to function, the fortress of doom had some kind of little medal-sized device that could apparently store and run that same ai all on its own for portable adventure times, no clue how if at all that changes anything for the humans at large, sans alien tech, but thought I should mention it as being a thing.
    As for the tank itself, doesnt it look a bit like a sleek, highly mobile artillery piece more than a real battle-tank? It only has that one big gun that is virtually unarmored, which to me suggests that it isnt lacking auxiliary weapons as a design oversight but, perhaps, it was built to fight from the extreme ranges such a big weapon array might allow for and to avoid close engagements with demons at all costs? This, again to me, makes sense since conventional tank armor wont really serve that much of a purpose against demons... They Do have some demon types with long ranged attack modes, cacofiends can spit fireballs from the skies and spooky skeleton rocket launchers do present a long ranged threat... But on the whole with Most demons be they imps, hell-knights or barons if they are close enough to attack a tank at all then odds are they will simply punch ten times if one punch wont do the job. If it is a knight or stronger, then putting enough tank armor on to actually let you last more than 2-3 punches would probably add up really quick (again, unless youre Doomslayer with his litterally magic armor and heck, that armor-value drops pretty dang fast around knight demons).
    In short, me thinks that for fighting demon hordes, offence is the only real option for defense... As the datalogues mention, the demons come in countless numbers and, given their masters, will not hesitate to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of their lower ranks to overrun a defensive emplacement no matter how high the walls or how sturdy the bunker shell. The only thing that'll stop them is to, quite crudely, kill them all before they can kill you. Armor isnt totally pointless obviously, dead people cant shoot guns after all. But given the problems of armoring anything to resist enemies that can rip through
    Finally, you mention that with articulated H-tanks an issue is getting power to the motors and such through the articulation joints to let the engines built into each section actually get some proper oomph in the ensuing locomotion (paraphrasing here, clearly). Something that might be relevant is that everything in the human army there runs off of argent energy which as its defining advantages for humans vs prior energy sources is how its clean, highly portable and incredibly dense in energy to mass ratios. Consider the level with the BFG1000, that's a gun emplacement that was capable of blasting a non-negligible chunk of mars into orbit with One shot, and they had that thing rapid firing blasts once every 10-20 seconds during the level with no real issues to speak of... And we all know what kind of portable doomsday device the 9k model is, even the plasma rifle puts out quite a few shots with a full mag (not that the slayer ever reloads so no clue how much of that would be one 'cell' per say...). If nothing else, we know its portable enough and powerful enough to make giant Mechs feasible... So all in all the fuel-source for a tank or any other vehicle of comparable size, which also serves as the ammo supply for any energy weapons mounted, to be ridiculously small and light relative to the mass of the vehicle being powered. Lets not mention how it could be used for energy shielding... The energy shields used by the military human to demon converts you fight are clearly argent tech after all... So You arent really restricted to relying on physical plates and, given how Much hardier those shields are compared to physical materials.. may not even want to.
    Now, I absolutely do not know tanks or real weapons remotely as well as you do, so I am curious... Given what's mentioned above and that you'd have to arm and armor an army for fighting this endless horde of fearless (Again, again.. except for the doomslayer) demons, how would you design the hardware that's supposed to let humanity save itself? Keep in mind that while killing things from a thousand miles away would indeed be ideal, some parts of the army will probably have to bite the bullet (demon fang?) and be equipped to serve as the first line of defense, if only to give the big guns more time to shoot stuff and possibly targeting data to help aim the artillery/missiles.
