Very nice video! I am a descendant of the Ancient Greeks. Well, according to my DNA profile, I am 55% Greek. Spiritually and philosophically I am 110% Ancient Greek.
Διογένης could have been my ancestor - who knows... Chuckle.
I don't think an honest person begs. I would rather die than beg from any other. In this respect, Διογένης was wrong in his actions.
Most humans are incorrigibly stupid and ignorant - especially those who fancy calling themselves mathematicians; they are amongst the most stupid I have ever encountered.

This is a bit late but Diogenes' name does not mean "The man from God".
You're blending your Latin and your Greek, Diogenes is a greek name and so Dio does not mean God to them. It does in Latin, sure, but the first minute is not correct; ie "The man from God who acted like a Dog" is not true.

He is a former philosophy professor who is actually rich for Dutch standards. He has children who are successful and prosperous. He chooses his way of life to take as little and give everything. Alexander found Diogenes scratching through some bones and when Alexander asked Diogenes what he was doing said "I'm looking for the bones of your father but I can't tell them apart from the bones of slaves". Alexander said "If he were not Alexander he would be Diogenes" which shows that Alexander must have felt the burdens and obligations of office, cares of which Diogenes had none.

You know one irony I take from this, is the very things which have become part of Diogenes' legend -- pissing on people who mock him, living where he pleases, living as a beggar yet showing contempt for the mindless masses, and caring not one bit for the race for money or status -- we look down on homeless people for or consider them mentally ill, when if they'd been born a thousand years ago would have made them great philosophers.

If I were Diogenes, I'd probably find a way to reply with piss for your comment. But since I'm not, let's give it a try.
By begging, Diogenes, proved to the fools around him(throughout time) that you can be spiritually self-sufficient, contempt and happy, even when you rely for your survival on the good will of others and their food offerings while being one of most irritating persons alive.
Contrary to what you might believe, accepting is more difficult than giving. By truly accepting something offered that you need, you feel gratitude and you agree on being willing to offer the analogous thing to someone else when needed. So accepting is a prerequisite of offering. "Taking" on the other hand(as in getting something that you feel should be rightfully yours/or you deserve it) is a lot more common, and it is a declaration that you are not inclined to offer something analogous, selflessly to someone else.
Accepting equals moral debt(not essentially towards the giver), taking equals personal debt towards someone(and not always).
Sometimes, when one wants to help someone with something(noble cause), even if he doesn't want to do it for a reward which is many times the case (because some things are priceless and you never want to devalue them by giving them a value), he might give the opportunity to the individual to give something back(mostly of very low value), so as to appear as there is no personal debt left.
In this case, Diogenes accepted the offerings as a beggar, so as the whole society would not owe him anything.
He should be treated as a king because of the potential good he could offer, and yet he was content with a piece of bread dependent on the good will of others.

    • @innosanto
      @innosanto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It was more than this, Diogenes was political and with opinion about the surroundings, not just a self-sufficient beggar, if you have this thought then perhaps the youtube videos do not portray accurately. He would comment on things happening around. But not give a fuck.
For example he lived in the pot and didn't give a fuck. And For example when the whole city of Corinth was preparing for Alexander the greats attack and would run up and down to make preparations and perhaps they were also angry that he wasn't doing anything, Diogenes would get up and start rolling-pushing the big ceramic pot house around the city up and down to also be active and do stuff!

+Mihai Balint not when you are your own authority you can then act for yourself, you are then a free and independent individual. Or you can rely on someone or something that will likely not be there when you actually need, and if you are in need of something for your very being you are its slave and it is the master. So yeah authority is BS.

It is a lie! Creators were they who created peoples, and hung a faith and a love over them: thus they served life.
Destroyers, are they who lay snares for many, and call it the state: they hang a sword and a hundred cravings over them.

Good presentation that bears much re-watch! The identification between Cynics and dogs ("kynikes") speaks a lot. Supposedly according to Diogenes, dogs live the ideal life: living day to day directly in nature, without property, self-sufficient yet social, good-humored and playful, without any shame about the physical body (from crapping to making love in public), obeying no authority they haven't chosen for themselves. And as you make a list of the virtues he championed, it sounds 90% like general Native American philosophy.

I see many comments referring to people in the modern world who act like Diogenes when in reality, “The Cynic” was much more than what he appears to be, despite the stories of his irrational behaviors. The difference between someone like Diogenes and your average rambling homeless man is that Diogenes did not abuse drugs, previously had wealth yet abandoned it, and was fully aware of his actions and decisions in life, whereas your average homeless man on the streets is on various substances, has never been wealthy, does no sort of pondering, and is unsure about himself and the world around him.

Diogenes = A mix of hyper minimalism and narcissism. And a mix of rasjonalism/zen and madness. The perfect illusjon of " perfect self sufficiency". In reality if you need to beg for food you are 100% addicted to the civilisasjon. We can all strive for self sufficiency, but reality is that in modern life the separasjon of tasks in industry and in civilisasjon is what we are all dependent on. And from we are born, humans are dependent on the parents to live. People like this is a great reminder, that it is indeed possible to live life in alot of different ways. And that we as humans are in a paradoxical way dependent yet at the same time independent.
