Meniscus Repair vs Meniscectomy

  • Tears in one of the two menisci usually require arthroscopic meniscectomy surgery and sometimes direct repair. Your orthopedic sports medicine surgeon may suspect a meniscus tear based on the McMurray test on examination, but the formal diagnosis requires an MRI scan of your knee. Meniscectomy and meniscus repair surgeries are outpatient, recovery is quick, and the pain is usually gone when you wake up.
    Meniscus injuries cause pain at the joint line and often have associated symptoms (popping, clicking, catching, and locking) as well as swelling of the knee. When they result from injuries sustained during sports, meniscal tears are caused by bending and rotating movements common in football, tennis, and basketball. However, most meniscal injuries don’t happen during sports; the most common cause of a meniscal injury is just getting out of a low car seat.
    Old folks are sometimes found to have a torn meniscus without even having a known injury, and the pain may be in the back of the knee due to the formation of a Baker’s cyst due to excessive fluid in the knee joint.

    I had meniscus repair back in 2012. 2 weeks after the surgery I could walk 8km with no pain whatsoever. One of the best investment I ever made.

      I had a lateral meniscal repair as well. Mine was in Nov. of 2010. But I apparently shredded mine bad enough to where they needed to remove roughly 30% of it. I’ve had a bit of a different experience though. My knee is very clicky/grindy lol and I experience pain in dramatic changes in weather and being on my feet excessively.

      @@BestPracticeHealth..Hi. I found out that I had Meniscus Tears in BOTH my knees from a slip and fall injury on 6/21/2023. I just had my 1st surgery on 11/16/2023, due to being scared. Lol. My surgeon stated to my daughter that I had cartilage damage, inflammation and the meniscus tears,(is there a possibility of having more than 1 tear)? Also I had another slip and fall (where I fell on the same knee in the exact same spot as I fell the 1st time on), at a smith’s grocery store 11/15/2023, from pallets pulled by employees that was carrying water, and the plastic had water left in it. To make a long story short, is it possible that I could had did more damage to my knee from the 2nd fall? I have an appointment with my doctor on 11/29/2023, but I’m curious as to if it’s a possibility or not, or could the cartilage damage happened from my 1st slip and fall injury or just me waiting for the length of time of having the surgery? My surgeon really didn’t explain to me or go into direct details of the surgery, just how long the surgery will last and how some of his patients didn’t have pain after the surgery. Everyone is different which I had to let him know that because I definitely am having pain, it feels like my knee is trying to lock, where it feels tight and stiff at times and it pops whenever I move, (is that part of the healing process), and I’m having more pain in my left knee due to me putting more pressure on it, of trying to keep some much weight off my right knee that I just had surgery on. I’ve started Physical Therapy 11/20/2023, and I’m doing the exercises that were given to me, and it’s like I’m in more pain afterwards. Is that also part of the healing process? Also another question, are the stitches dissolvable on the outer layer of my skin or do my doctor remove them himself? Because I’m being informed by physical therapy that their dissolvable and should had been dissolved by now. I’m just curious. I’m sorry for a lengthy questionnaire and as I stated before, my surgeon never really went into direct details before my surgery.

    I tore my meniscus a few months ago and have pain when trying to get back into sports. Does this pain come from the lack of cushion between the bones or from the meniscus tear itself?

    I use the VA hospital but have no faith in them, it’s been 5 months since my knee injury from a bad massage therapist twisting my feet outward. If I see a civilian doctor who should I go to, orthopedic surgeon? Sports medicine?

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Full disclosure: I had some of my training at the San Francisco VA and I loved that place. If I understand you right you have 5 months of severe knee pain that began with a twisting injury. The best doctor for that situation is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine.

      How’s it going with the injury, and I feel you about VA. I don’t know if it’s just a Virginia thing or a health insurance thing but I took me 5 months to finally get issues a MRI and them to see the torn meniscus, they gave me a ton of wrong diagnosis and made me to PT. After the mri I got a quick surgery. I’m 4 weeks into recovery, 2 weeks left until I can be weight bearing again. I recommend Ortho Virginia.

      @@ionzOG hey, around the 9 month mark I started to feel better. I’m about 10.5 months past injury and am pretty much at 0/10 pain now thank goodness. I took one week off of work and just relaxed and I think that was the cherry on top that finally brought me down to a 0 pain scale again. Are you relaxing and feeling better? I’m so sorry they made you PT on a torn ligament. When I said VA I meant veterans affairs, not Virginia!

    Thanks for the video.I just recently got my MRI back and the doctor told me that I may need a partial meniscectomy vs repair. Does that mean he will try to repair what can be repaired or is it something to worry about. My injury happen 3 weeks ago when I felt a pop on the inner part of my leg (medial meniscus) and it hurts to the touch on the center of the joint. I am able to still bend my knee and walk with limited motion and I now feel little pops every now and then and it feels like the outside part of the meniscus is on the outer edge of the bone almost like it slipped out a little. I was never told what kind of tear or what grade it is. Can you please give your opinion and thoughts to what I may have done?

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. That’s what that means, that they will try to repair the meniscus, and what can’t be repaired will be “cleaned up.“. The important thing for you to ask yourself is, do you have the right doctor to get the best chance at a good repair. Is your doctor board-certified in sports medicine and highly experienced in arthroscopic surgery of the knee?

      Thank you for the advice. I have another question If you dont mind. After my injury and the swelling has gone down from taking my antiflamitory meds, I am able to bend my knee fully with no lock but I'm able to feel my front side of my medial meniscus on the joint line that seems to be out of place and when I rub on it, it has a rolling sensation under the skin almost like a vein. My question is, if that is the case then what kind of tear does it seem that I have and do you think its repairable with stitching it up back into place?

    I had surgery for a meniscus tear on 3/16/23 and I’m still in pain in my knee. Some days it’s ok…other days it’s sore. Some ppl say the weather is causing the pain, others say I went back to work too soon. I’m worries. When I went for my check up X-rays were done and Ortho says it looks good but the more weight I put on it the more pain I feel. I am still doing my stretch and exercises but the knee is not able to go completely back comfortably. Am I being impatient?

      So, you are having persistent post operative knee pain 12 weeks after meniscectomy. It sounds like there is something else wrong. If your surgeon is not addressing it I'd recommend a second opinio0n. BEST PRACTICE3 is to see a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine.

      @@BushidoBrown117 I went away to Europe and the walking aggravated it a bit. Now Three weeks later and it is feeling better. It’s really sore whenever I sit for too long and have to stand up. I’m from the Caribbean and someone recommended this product called Iodex (google it it’s in a green and black bottle) I rub it on my knees in the morning and let me tell u it is soooo good. With it on, my knee feel like it was before. My dr said it may be inflammation and gave me a prescription for steroids etc. I have yet to take it. And I won’t. So I keep walking more and putting more pressure on it little daily. So it’s better than it was at the time of my response.

      A surgeon should never completely remove the entire meniscus. There is no cushion any longer. Its gonna hurt.

      I knew someone that had fluid drained out. He then got surgery because the Doctor said it was an infection in the meniscus. Not sure of all the details but basically they cut some of the meniscus in which was the infection. Only thing is he can't straightened his leg and only has a 90° bend in the knee. I believe it was because he didn't fully continue doing the therapy exercises after he stop going to therapy. Its kind of like your leg and knee have to relearn to walk again and you must strengthen it and keep growing muscles and strengthen your body with exercise and more leafy greens to regrow muscle and tendens. Anyway hope this helps. God bless. (NOT A DOCTOR, SO ALWAYS CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL)

    This is not true, some randomized trials show that after two years results are the same on knee function with operative and conservative treatment. Most young athletes don’t tolerate long periods out demanding-knee sports, but amateurs can try knee physical therapy and reinforce the region showing good results in several months.
    Removing part pf the meniscus can lead to cartilage damage over years, so always we should take care of a rational protocol of treatment and let surgery as an ultimate solution
