I was fortunate to work with James Remar right after he left ALIENS on BAND OF THE HAND and for the record, Jimmy was truly a nice guy ... funny and accepting of the ironies of his personal life. I'd work with him any day of the week then ... and certainly today. D.A.
Ricco Ross sounds like a very humble, down to earth guy. And the fact that he didn´t want to say the reason behind James Remar being fired was very respectful and friendly.

The official reason given at the time was "creative differences," but in later interviews, Remar revealed that he was struggling with a drug problem, which led to his dismissal from the film. Remar's personal issues made it difficult for him to perform his role effectively, prompting the filmmakers to make the decision to recast the character.
I remember briefly meeting Ricco Ross at a comic convention at the Shrine Auditorium back in the late ‘90s. He was signing photographs of the entire cast of Colonial Marines with Jenette Goldstein and Mark Rolston. Ricco asked me what I’d like him to write on my photograph and, being a U.S. Marine, I asked, “How about ‘Semper Fi’? Ricco asked me what that meant, and I told him it was the motto of the Marine Corps, meaning “Always Faithful”. I felt it was appropriate as the Colonial Marines would be descendants of the Marine Corps. Ricco signed “Semper Fi” next to his photo, commenting, “I think I’ll start using this!” Semper Fi, Ricco! 🦅🌎⚓️
I was an extra on the movie Horns...James Remar and an actress sat behind me during setting up the scene. He mentioned to her how he screwed up his role on Aliens...how he thought he was the star...and his ego (and other stuff) was a part of the firing...I just listened in (or eavesdropped) on him talking about his career.

OMG. Great actor! That movie was in my blood that summer. So great. My MOST quoted line from that movie is: "What are we supposed to use? Harsh language?" Wonder if he came up with that, too.
What’s great here is Rico seems to just love his craft and obviously the film we got was with Michael Biehn as Hicks. What was awesome there was I truly bought into the Frost/Hicks friendship. Like, maybe Hicks was the superior rank but early on, while Hicks was portrayed as “just another grunt”, I always watch it with the feeling that Frost is the superior in that friendship. Frost is the vocal one. Hicks on a personal level looks up to Frost. That’s the impression I get. All credit to Biehn. He IS Hicks. But Rico made that friendship believable and suggested the history there because of the way Hicks was gradually brought forward from the miscellany of the supporting crew to being the reluctant hero we all know and love. The Hicks/Frost relationship, Rico must take credit for that because he put his focus there, it seems. Awesome. Seems like a cool guy too.
"Frost" WAS a great character, I wish he had stuck around a little longer! Thank you Ricco Ross! I just wonder if there was on-set friction between Cameron and Remar, or just the off-set whatever it was?
According to other interviews, the main reason Remar was recasted was because he was unfortunately struggling with addiction at the time. I think one of the final straws was that James Remar accidentally fired live ammo on set and blasted a whole in a wall. According to Al Matthews (Apone) no one had any idea how Remar got ahold of a loaded gun.
@JohnnytNaturalHis being great as another character means nothing in regards to a wholly different character and performance. Mevermind that while Hicks was fantastic as Hicks... we will never know what Remars Hicks wouldve been like. It wouldve been a totally different iteration and interpretation.
It still cracks me up that the Space Marine E7 Gunnery Sergeant is wearing US Army Sergeant First Class chevrons. Probably because the only Marines in England are Embassy staff and wardrobe didn’t know what the difference was.
much like his character in The Warriors (1979), he has a professional history of playing people who just can't get out of their own way while ending in failure.

Added irony/Fun Fact: I like to think that the late actor/musician Al Matthews played the character of Colonial Marine Sergeant Apone so well is because he was an actual Marine Corp Infantry Sergeant ( the first black Marine to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant E-5) during the Vietnam War.

I think Michael Biehn brings a little more vulnerability to the character, so there seems a little more chemistry between Hicks and Ripley.
While both are great character actors Michael was absolutely made for that role.. That said I doubt he’d have ever fit Ajax or Ganz
