When Switch says that line about 20 questions, if you were to count the number of questions Neo asked up to that point, you would find out he asked, you guessed it, 20 questions.

My favorite Easter Egg in the Matrix is when Neo goes to see the Oracle. There is music playing very faintly in the background from her radio. And the name of the song? Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning To See The Light."

Switch’s handle: I always liked this one. She is called “Switch” because in the original script she was supposed to be male in the real world and female in the Matrix. The best the studio would let the Wochawski’s do is make her tomboyish in the real world. It is also when you think about it a foreshadowing of the Wachowski’s personal lives in the years after the movie.

Additionally, at the time of release, estrogen pills were red. As the Matrix itself was an allegory for the trans condition and the difficulties trans people have assuming the identities of who they are supposed to be, taking the 'red pill' was a sly indication of taking the hormones a trans woman would use to effect their transition.

Imagine going through a day where you’re not loaded with caffeine, sugar, carbs, nicotine, liquor, access to your phone, and that job you hate. All of those things gone for one day.

the deja vu scene always bothered me, because nobody would ever refer to something that blatantly weird as deja vu. It was a good concept, but the implementation was jarring to me for some reason. Maybe the cat shaking itself off was just too much of a tell and felt a bit patronising.

7:08, a couple more things that people may not know about this scene is that, while the machine pulls Neo out of the pod, Reeves' idea was to draw a correlation between himself and the infant in the pod, so he shaved off all his body hair, including his eyebrows AND eyelashes to look more like a newborn.
Another thing you may not have known, was that the goo in the pod was bone-chillingly cold and Reeves came dangerously close to hypothermia several times, but he was so committed to helping the Wachowskis achieve the scene, that he ignored his condition, despite the medical staff's suggestions to get out and warm up.

#11. The entire film is structured around Thomas/Neo waking up, which he does 9 times: 1. "Wake up, Neo" on his computer. 2. Alarm buzzing 9:18 "Shit, shit." Neo is late for work. 3. Post interrogation Neo wakes up as from a nightmare and touches his mouth and checks his navel. 4. Silver fluid covers Neo and he blacks out, then awakens in his pod, covered in goo. 5. Neo awakens to find himself surrounded by Morpheus' crew. Morpheus says, "Welcome to the real world." Then New blacks out. Neo drifts in and out of consciousness. Asks "Am I dead?" and "Why do my eyes hurt?" 6. Neo awakens in his cabin on the Nebuchadnezzar and pulls out the IV in his arm. 7. After vomiting and passing out, New wakes up in his bunk. "I can't go back, can I?" After accepting his life in the real world, we no longer see Neo wake up: 8. Trinity brings Neo's dinner to his room while he is sleeping. Then he is up in the Construct, being taught by Morpheus about agents. Neo can't sleep and talks to Cypher and drinks Dozer's moonshine. 9. The next day, they visit the oracle, are betrayed by Cypher, and Neo dies, Shot by Agent Smith. He is brought back to life by Trinity.

technically in the lyrics there is an additional "wake ya up", but it's not exactly the same "wake up" as the rest, and it's part of a longer sentence, so I prefer adding the song title in credits instead...

So on that point I don't think it makes less sense I think it makes an acceptable amount of sense. It's a movie doesn't have to be perfect just has to make sense and I think that makes an acceptable amount.

Lastly, the Architect says "You played a dangerous game" to the Oracle pointing out that he finally figured out something that was not obvious until the Oracle's choice's actions were completed. Which brings us back around to the fact that he can't see past any choice, particularly the choice the Oracle made years before the movie events to convince both worlds that Neo is the One.
In any case, I think we will get some answers from Matrix 4. No theories are wrong until cannon says so.

Because the matrix is artificial, I see the city as an amalgamation of serval cities from humanity's past as all of those cities are now in ruins and the machines only had the leftover data and video to recreate civilization within the matrix after their Eden version failed. It's entirely possible that the city in the majority of the Matrix scenes in the films is the entire matrix itself and no other cities really exist therein. It's like how they keep Jim Carrey's Truman in The Truman Show from leaving the town he lived in his entire life. If you've got no pressing reason to go anywhere else what does it matter if nothing else exists beyond your horizons. This is further indicated by the fact that when the group goes to see the Merovingian they have to go to another area of the matrix, like a new layer meant for programs and those humans they invite as entertainment.

Cypher supposedly met up with the Agents previously, as was established in the beginning when the Agents chasing Trinity in the opening scene said the info they got from their informant - Cypher - checked out. He had to give it to them in the Matrix unbeknownst to the rest of the crew already. It is possible Cypher has a sort of script to go in and automatically call for him to go out of the system - remember that the operator is there to provide SECURE way out without people around through a clean exit of the core network. Cypher doesn't need that, he needs exit, any exit would do, since the Agents already are aware of his movement in and out of the system for their benefit as their rat. Plugging in and out physically on your own isn't impossible, it's just easier and faster if others help you, especially with years of experience Cypher supposedly has.
Even Mouse while pimping out the Woman In The Red Dress probably doesn't watch the programs run if other people use it or doesn't want others to watch when he uses it, so it's definitely possible they might be using some automated scripts regularly for trainings or stuff in the Construct. But just because they typically use it in the construct doesn't mean you couldn't set it up in the Matrix, which Cypher does multiple times (apparently). Otherwise only one operator per ship would not be enough for a crew of more than 3 people going in and out of the Matrix and the Construct...
But since it is irrelevant to the story, it doesn't need to be explained. The whole thing about the Matrix is that anything can be done there as it is not really real... And that doesn't even begin to describe it if you feed into the whole theory of simulation within a simulation (i.e. "real world" being another level of simulation, another system of control)

@Christopher Norris I don't think is a call for Neo, that has already escaped and it is now recruiting.
I think is a cry for help for us to be recruited and realize that we(the audience) need to wake up.

Aside from the Anderson/Neo/One implications, Morpheus, Trinity, Zion, the Nebuchadnezzar, and all sorts of names are derived from religious texts spanning multiple religions and theologies. Most of the dialogue from and with Cypher is derivative of Judas. There's direct references to the Bible, including on the data plate for their ship.
There is so much theology packed into the movie that it's hard to miss it. I had to rewatch and do a 50-page paper on The Matrix as it relates to defining the self (yourself, as well as humanity, in the context of other books we'd read) as the final for my first college-level English course.
Pretty big leap from high school. But one of the most eye-opening times of my life.

One of my favourite things about the dynamic between Smith and Neo is the meanings behind their names.
A smith is one who works in metal. We all know that and can spend all day on the subject, but let's save that discussion.
Neo is an anagram for one. It's a little on the nose, and less interesting than the character's actual name which is Thomas A. Anderson. The name Anderson means son of man. To many it's a Messiah reference, but it ultimately means human.
Thomas on the other hand is a bit more colourful. It's an old African (Aramaic to be precise) name that, on the surface, means twin. In practice it's more like 'There are two of you, so where is the other one?'
Together they're a diametrically opposed set. How fascinating is that, when considering their place in the story?

Maybe Agent Smith's first name is also Thomas

When talking about the "Neo is Jesus" aspect, I'm surprised you didn't mention Trinity's name, which is an obvious religious reference to the Holy Trinity- God the father (Morpheus), Jesus the son (Neo), and the Holy Spirit (Trinity), whose love literally brings Neo back to life. I love how brilliant and full of hidden meaning this film is.

It's everyone's favourite nuclear killer rabbit movie. But, does it has a meaning in the movie? I'm thinking maybe it's referencing the fact that a harmless creature (Anderson) can become a fearsome monster (Neo) from the perspective of the machines (The Oracle?)

Your work is dramatically superior than most other videos offering explanations of THE MATRIX.
My only hesitation got declaring it THE BEST is the speed of your delivery. What can I tell your, I'm a Native combat veteran who has some issues with hearing. Back in my day, there was no thought to protecting our hearing. The common thought was, if they can't hear, the enemy can sneak up and kill them. Hence, we were never offered Heaton hearing protection, at all, ever.
Of there's any complaint from me, it's the rapid fire monolog.
    Everything else is spot on.
When TH HE MATRIX was released in 1999, I was an internet engineer and manager for the network operations center for an ISP.
All of us were the target audience for this film. We were so UNIX sys admins as well as Cisco router geeks.
I saw it twice the 1st day and many times since then.
Nice video, many thanks for all of your hard work and the time invested.

      Cyberpunk came first dude.
The concepts go back as far as the sixties - The word, "Cyberpunk," as far as I'm aware, dates to the early eighties from a Bruce Bethke story.

"The word cyberpunk was coined by writer Bruce Bethke, who wrote a story with that title in 1980. He created the term by combining "cybernetics," the science of replacing human functions with computerized ones, and "punk," the raucous music and nihilistic sensibility that became a youth culture in the 1970s and '80s"

03:50 - Wait, you use the word androgyny to describe Agent Smith being neither fully human nor fully machine? Androgyny is a specific term referring to a mix of masculine and feminine characteristics, not some generic term for a mix of any two random characteristics like human and machine.
