    I was really surprised at just soldering the break. I know the resin should support it but I was fully expecting a weld and grind not a solder.

    • @pr0faker
      @pr0faker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      it doesnt, this is a botcher at work. For very light work sure the epoxy will hold but a bit of lead doesn't do jack shit to keep a handle together like that. Better yet, you can see it flex even when he just is putting on the first handle scale with the drill, just see the break open and close at 11:35... he also restored a knife that was 'destroyed' by a fire, but never rehardened and tempered the blade -.-

      Agreed that soldering is not enough, that knife will break again with any utility use.

    • @lukeolinger6000
      @lukeolinger6000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! Even though he leaves a huge mess when he welds, he should have pried out that "strengthening" piece and filled it all in with weld for a stronger repair.

    • @Austeration
      @Austeration 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he probably knows that. Maybe he just got into a bit of trouble on this one. All his other projects have been excellent so we can't knock him for this bit. I have seen much worse on other channels.

    It looks good but so does that doughnut 😊. I am only going to suggest using Corby bolts to provide a more durable mechanical connection besides the soldering on the handle.

    it looks great but the temper on the bottom inch of the blade by the gaurd is ruined and will need re heat treating and tempering, i get why you didnt tho, at heat treating temps youd have melted that guard off. next time you need to get heat that close to the blade try wrapping it in a wet cloth it wiprotect the temper

    You did a nice finish, but honestly that tang was way too short to do any serious cutting. The handle was an aluminum cast piece and the reason it broke was because the metal tang wasn't long enough going through the cast aluminum handle section.. But as a little use knife, it will work.

  • @robvermeulen4043

    That knife hadn't a good start in live as aluminum and steel do go together. In this case you couldn't do much about it, its is what it is. But soldering is to my assumption just cosmetic as it can't be structural. Nevertheless, nice try with this knife.

  • @AandB1998
    @AandB1998 ปีที่แล้ว

    I almost thought you might channel out the aluminum and then metal brace the handle for a bit more structural support. Nevertheless, all in all it was a nice end product. Loved the scales!

    I hadn't been watching for a while and was curious about this video. My husband and I both watched together and were extremely disappointed in what you eventually did with the handle. This was the worst thing you could have done and you still called it a "restoration". So wrong and have been disheartened by more than this video. Before I unsubscribe I simply wanted you to know that I have seen far better work from other true restorers. I think you should rethink your content and processes. Going to watch them now. Wish you luck.
