Thank you so much! I bought a UPRR #102 for $8 (no key of course). Just made a working key on my second try. I still have to add the brass key tag; it doesn't look as nice as yours; but it works!! Thanks again!!
I've made them out of steel as well, you just need to file a little longer. You can epoxy a coin to the bow instead of solder it. Soldering doesn't work on the galvanized rods. I think 5/16" is 5/16" - maybe my camera distorted the picture a little.
I have an old environmental stamped on the side "BN 12 44" so I'm assuming it's a 112, however the key it came with is a 105 which seems to operate flawlessly as one would expect. What gives? Also, after rewatching a couple of your videos and getting a better understanding of this key system, it seems to me as if the 112 lock wouldn't be key retaining since it is essentially gradually stepping off to the 0 degree plane with no backtracking if you will. Does that make sense to you or am is my lil brained about like a burnt fuse and just not making a connection somewhere?
brycejcox : The lock you have is from Burlington Northern R/R. Here on the west coast we're Burlington Northern & Santa Fe R/R which was established in 1995 ( merger). The key #'s for us Railroaders designated particular subdivisions. As for key retaining locks to the best of my knowledge were a newer design requested by railroads to ensure that employees "Conductors, brakemen, switchmen etc...wouldnt forget to leave a mainline switch or derail unsecured, the switch had to be locked in order to get your keys back, that's the rumor anyhow. As for the 12-44 identification, one only guessing is a switch or track "Click nunber"(identification). Knowing the whacky world or railroads, the numbers could be anything and the true key would be in fact a 105 cut.
i wish I’d found this video before I made the key for mine, but I used a 5/16 drill bit I didn’t have any round stock of any kind, I did use a wooden dowel to find the correct bit spacing tho and marked the drill bit on each section and just filed till I found the correct angles and it opened lol
The video about the environmental padlock they say "Since key blanks are a factory controlled it is all but impossible to make unauthorized duplicates" yes that's right that's exactly what they said and they're absolutely right. ROFLMAO. It's even simpler than making a key for the Abloy classic. The moment I first saw the environmental I of course knew I had to have it in my collection so hey I got the 102 by lucky incident. But I also knew that should anyone have a key or even just a photo of the original it would be a pretty simple matter making a copy especially if you can live without the shoulder. Just a pair of files and a hacksaw is all you need. Sure to make a nice key you can do it on a lathe to get a perfect shoulder, make a sawcut in the end and brazing a plate in there to act like the head but of course all that it not really required and if you want an unauthorized key that'll scream hand copied as "my locksmith refused to copy it so I did it myself" :D
At 4:33 what measurement that you drawn the line down the middle of the 5/16" rod? Should we not go past the black horizontal line when we are doing the bitting?
Hello Bill! Great video! Found it after I figured out to make my own key using cotter pin. No I see others have as well. Should looked first! One inquiry / observation however: On your matrix sheet, you list # 103 as 45-90-45. In the forum keypicking Mister Sour has an image of a 103 at - as it is shown, it would be 45-0-45. Can you confirm your numbers?
What yould be a good way to contact you? Just wanted to share some pictures with you and see if you wanted to give one of my locks a try? I have a s&g 8088. Its a safe dial in a padlock. Even has the same but a miniture reset key. So if you could point me in a direction to get your email, i bet we would have a lot to talk about. Thanks.
Yeah I was binge watching TH-cam videos last night not really paying attention to where they were from but good on you for answering me anyway I hope you got a chuckle out of it at least
Made my key for my lock 4 years ago using this video. Hope you have a good retirement bill. Thanks for all the great videos over the years.
I just finished making mine. It's a 104. Great tutorial Bill, thanks.
We use those locks at work and I've seen guys make keys out of steel cotter pins of the appropriate size.
Great workmanship. Probably better than the original
Thanks Jim, now you can make your own key!

I don't like to be picky but that's a vernier caliper not a micrometer.
Cheers
Schnuz.
If you're going to be picky. That is a digital caliper. Vernier Calipers have the lines that line up to give you the next digit of precision.
I'm spending so much time in the shed that the wife's going to move the bed out there, Awesome i didn't even have to ask!!!!!!
I have a 108 ive been trying to get a key for. I am going to try this and see how she chooches.

It is the center of the rod. 5/16" rod=5/32" for the center.
FANTASTIC video tutorial Bill, Brilliant job :o))))
THATS FINE WORK BILL!!!
Seems like you could do this with copper pipe as well, maybe not as pretty as brass but it would be pretty unique!
What did you use to stamp 101 in the "coin".
If I use 5/16" made of steel, would it still work? Why does you're 5/16" Brass Rod seems so much bigger than my 5/16" Steel Rod?
Very nice work! I assume the use of the mill for the rest?

Bill, you're such a crazy guy that you would make a lot of locksmith unemployed.
