    Hey Bill. I heard you have retired and I heard the story behind it.
    I wish you and your family all the best for the future. You are a good man with a beautiful family.
    You were the very first lock picker I watched on TH-cam and I learned a lot.
    Be well, be strong, be safe. Cheers David.

    My lock picking journey began with slight interest in how locks work, a roommates drunken Amazon purchase of lock picks, and of course watching your videos.
    Bill, thank you for your years of service to the community and the immeasurable amount of knowledge you've shared.

    Phew! well done Bill on biting the bullet-If people are really into challenge locks,there is no reason why they could not set up their own channel-I'm sure you would put a link to it is you were asked politely.
    I must say I always enjoyed your "on the road" videos and the machining and shooting stuff!
    Your recent exploration into leever locks (sorry!) got my attention but may not be everyone's cup of tea-Can't please everyone.
    It's your unfailing politeness and charm that comes across so well that makes this channel what it is-thanks.

    Hey Bill, I hope you enjoy all that extra time you're going to have. Yours was the first channel I discovered on the dark art of lock picking, as you do I went down that TH-cam rabbit hole and spent hours watching you pop open locks with what seemed to be considerable ease ( oh how wrong I was, as I discovered after getting a set of picks and a clear training lock😂).
    Thanks for all your time and effort over the years. Wishing you a long and happy retirement

    Your rationale and explanation are solid - and it makes sound business sense. For what it's worth, I agree that many of the locks were tired copies. I did see some interesting concepts over time and learned some new things - but understand your frustration as well.
    Ultimately I will continue to support you and the lab - I enjoy the videos and look forward to the new ones. I know you will keep up the good work and hope that you end up being refreshed with the new challenges as well. Thanks for all that you do.

    I had always heard you say you quit doing challenge locks, and I was always curious why but could never find a post going into it. Now I know, and everything is 100% valid in my mind. It was more a curiosity as to why, but never a complaint. I've loved your channel for several years now, and you continue to make it interesting and show off some really neat locks and picking techniques. Thank you for everything, and keep up the great work!

  • @metamorphicorder
    @metamorphicorder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bill, good for you for stepping up and helping that family. I as a child went through that so many times. There wasnt alway someone to step up the way you did, and the ones that did were never perfect, but they were willing to step up, and because they did im a better person than i think i would have been.
    And a person has to know their limits in life. Obviously we all WANT continuing content from you, buf hell man you pumped it out for how many years? Let them have that. If you and the woman drive each other crazy a year or five from now mayhaps you will put out some more vijeos for your own edification and our enjoyment. Untill then.... stay safe and stay legal.

    Tough decision, but I think a great one. I love your channel and it has gotten me into the hobby, but even I bored of the challenge locks that weren't even challenges - they were cobbled together trap pins to get a paclock as you said. I lost interest. This refresh is a welcome change and I love the collabs with LPL. Whatever decision you make you will loose on the internet, so I'm glad you made one and are sticking to it - it is definitely for the better. Keep up the amazing channel!

    You've made the right call. I enjoyed the challenge lock videos less than any of your other ones - it was interesting to see some of the great talent out there, but like you say - wading through 10 of the nasty ones for 1 great one just isn't worth it. And the return postage alone is justification enough! Looking forward to more of your instructional and advice videos as well as the "here's a product you might not have seen before" ones :)

  • @jeffk204
    @jeffk204 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep all those reasons add up to a very understandable decision. Hopefully it will allow you to focus on other kinds of videos without the burden of a pile of challenge challenge locks vying for your time/focus.
    Maybe you can add a forum page to the lock-lab website that would allow people to exchange email addresses to swap challenge locks among themselves, or refer to another forum that might already be setup to do that?
    Keep all the great videos coming. The collaboration with LPL to create a new tool was especially fascinating.

    • @DanBowkley
      @DanBowkley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Challenge Lock Registry. Select your skill level and receive an address to which to send a lock at the same time as someone gets your address. Give one get one. Bill is only out the requisite web hosting (already paid for) and everyone mostly wins.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff K and Dan Bowkley Yes, I considered hosting a forum when I started up the LockLab website (it is an inexpensive add-in module) and discussed it with several other forum operators. I decided not to implement it for two reasons:
      1. Time. Moderating forums takes up a lot of time. Some of the moderators say that it adds up to a full-time job keeping the forums focused and keeping spammers away from it. I went so far as to interview possible moderators, but once they discovered the time requirement, they backed out.
      2. GDPR. The General Data Protection Regulation was implemented in May 2018 and has SEVERE penalties for violations. I cannot store personal information of any kind, to include email address, on my website's server. A single violation can result in fines up to $2000. There are exceptions, of course, but the paperwork and reporting requirements are quite burdensome, and time-consuming. I removed the LockLab's messaging module to avoid legal exposure to GDPR violations.

    I fully understand your decision. What I don't understand is why anyone sending you a challenge lock wouldn't include prepaid return packaging, or other means for you to return them without being out of pocket. Maybe it's just me, but I'd consider that a basic courtesy.

    I will admit, I'll miss the really weird ones...there were some that just amazed me with their elegant ways to be downright nasty. And I'm going to spend quite a while kicking myself for not getting my "Chubb Detector meets Best IC" idea out the door in time. But...you're right, challenge locks are a bit of a niche and probably scare the newcomers more than anything.
    Maybe an occasional lock that needs not be returned, from a somewhat vetted maker?

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dan Bowkley Yeah, I'll miss the really weird ones too, but wading through 50 or 100 junk locks to find one good one took up too much time and treasure. I do have a few vetted makers that will continue to send in the occasional innovation (which I will show off - but not as a challenge lock), but won't accept any more poorly constructed, slapped together Kwiksets full of threaded chambers and screws (the most common submission).

  • @TheUniquePlumberman

    Sorry to hear that you're quitting the challenge videos. It was one of the reasons I subscribed to your channel. It was one of the things that set you apart from the other lockpicking channels. I understand that cost are a factor in the decision (no one else has give-aways). Your videos are the whole reason I got interested in locksport. I will continue to support you and look forward to what lies ahead Bill. "Be safe & keep it legal!" 😉

  • @sebastiand152

    How about accepting more challenge locks under some conditions? Like a return box with postal stamp in the package? And the sender has to assure, that an interesting feature will be in the lock. I guess, most lock pickers are honorable and would not abuse this by sending you crap locks.
    I would like to see more interesting challenge locks.

  • @RoeLunatic4ever
    @RoeLunatic4ever 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Bill,
    Let me start with, aaaahhhh wtf??
    I find the challenge-lock videos really great.
    With my technical knowledge as 3D draftsman mechanical engineering I can really enjoy the complexity of some locks.
    Sometimes it is so brilliant that I think, the maker of such a lock is a genius or just sick in the head.
    For me personally, I find it very unfortunate that you stop these challenge-lock videos, but your well-founded explanation why you 'must' stop this is completely clear to me.
    It will not have been easy to stop these videos because when I hear you talking, you kick on some of those challenge-locks, I like.
    Luckily you make a lot more beautiful video clips and I'm not tired of it yet.
    What started 3 years ago (or what do I say, I think it's been a lot longer) with a random clip i stumbled upon on TH-cam has become a daily occupational therapy including a subscription to your youtube page.
    In the meantime I have gained a nice collection of locks, picks and other attributes, and I finally have a real hobby.
    Thank you, please continue with the cool videos!
