    Hi Adam, Pete from England here.
    I just love all your video, but especially the ones where you visit small towns and show us all their idiosyncrasies.
    I've never been to the States but feel I've got to know so much about it from your work that many Americans would be unaware of.

    Those calves you saw are in "Calf Hutches"...the vast majority of dairy calves live in a calf hutch for the first weeks of life. Housing calves in hutches allows calves with immature immune systems to receive individualized care during the most crucial part of their lives. With a calf living in an individual hutch farmers can see exactly how much milk and other feed they consume and can see the consistency of their manure, both are an important indicator of health.

    • @markthomas6980
      @markthomas6980 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wrong.. they are VEAL HOUSES.. they lock the calf’s in there so they can’t move. To keep the meat tender. They will never make it to be a cow.

    • @ShelleeGraham
      @ShelleeGraham 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Thank you for providing that information. 👍 So interesting and happy to know the calf’s health is monitored so closely.

      @@roxanneswanson4500 You are right. Those calves are taken from their mothers to keep "mom" producing milk to sell. The young ones are either raised for milk production, veal or if allowed to grow up, they are headed to the slaughter house.

    Another great backroads video. When you said Wisconsin, I thought maybe you'd do Beloit College. When my daughter was looking there, during the tour, we found out that Beloit College and Professor Roy Chapman Andrews was the real-life inspiration to Indiana Jones. The "Cowlien" came from the Milkyway and that is not udderly ridiculous. The 1940 Ford is what MY grandparents used to cross the country that same year along Route 66. Calves in large dog sheds are not uncommon. I see that in Pa. all the time. You seem obsessed with water towers. You should go to Weirton, W.V. where Super 8 was filmed. Thanks for another good one. The Grotto in Dickeysville was AWESOME to see n I would have definitely gone inside n bought a souvenir from the gift shop!! We go to two different Catholic Shrines in Michigan VERY often on our sister's vacations we now do every year. The Indian River Shrine in Indian River, Michigan, the lower peninsula, has the world's largest Crucifix n many little grottos for different saints as well as a Church, n it is been there since before we started going there on our vacations in Topinabee right nearby in the 1960's. We just revisitef it last August, n the towering Crucifix you can actually walk right up to n stand underneath is EXTREMELY worth the trip to see!!! It is iconic!!! The Bishop Baraga Shrine in the upper peninsula in L'Anse, Michigan where my sister Wendy lives is a beautiful place right on Lake Superior with his actual cabin he lived in in the 1600's when he was the first Priest to minister to the Indians n the loggers by visiting them wearing snowshoes to get to them in the long winters as there was no other way to travel up there back then, thus he being named "The Snowshoe Priest!!! They also have the BEST religious gift shop EVER, where you can get all kinds of HOLY items for .50 cents to a few dollars including all Catholic accoutrements necessary for our worship, as well as homemade ice cream mafe by the Nun that hosts the shop!!! Also just went there last August n it is well worth the trip too!!!

      City folks tend to live in there big bubble and know nothing of the real American small towns. Maybe they think of them as just a pit stop off the interstate. Off the interstate, gas up, fast food and back on the interstate.

      Having been born and raised in the Midwest, I'd say this is standard fare. Having traveled extensively in the US, I would include just about everywhere I've seen. Most small towns are gems that need just a bit of polish.

      @@SBCBears Before Covid I was traveling with a friend on a business trip he was taking. I was just along for the ride, and he stopped at many small stores to check on their displays. I saw endless small towns, some sad and some really nice. Usually small towns with a college were the best downtown. Retail has moved to outside the towns now. Downtown's are usually small antique stores and restaurants. And if its the county seat, a courthouse, and jail, etc.

    A cow must give birth to calves to continue to produce milk as a dairy cow. The calf’s are taken from their moms to prevent them from feeding on her and slowing down her milk production as a dairy cow and help prevent spread of bacteria. It’s a very cruel practice for cows because they are very attached to their calves. Hurts my heart to see this.

    I don't know where your destination is, but if you keep going North East you will make it to Green Bay, home of the Packers. Keep going North and you'll make it to my hometown of Iron Mountain Michigan. Home to the Pine Mountain International Ski Jumps, the Ford Motor Company WWII glider factory ruins. The Cornish Pump mining museum, home to the largest Cornish Pump in the USA, and the Ford Motor Company Glider Museum. Come on up to the U.P. and visit with the Yoopers, you're sure to have a great time don't ya know!!!!
