Great job with all these amps. It really illustrates the unique qualities that Blackmore brought to rock. He is such a great musician. Really, one of a kind
I like all three; maybe the ENGL is the one I prefer because I heard it live in the last Rainbow tour, but Mistreated with the Custom Major is fabulous!
I like all three too. And yes mistreated sounds just right with the major but I am okay playing man on the silver mountain on any of it. My wife said the engl sound like a studio recording while the major sounds live. I thought it was a great way of summing it up.
Great Video! I think you nailed it here. The ENGL was not really designed to sound like the Marshals. It was the amp he was after in the 90s. You can still get in the same ballpark, but it has its own sound. I own the ENGL and the flexibility it brings to get into modern high gain, but still get some of the classic tones with lower gain settings was the appeal. I recently started using a Revival Drive Compact in the clean channel and find it gets closer to the 70’s Marshall tones than using the low gain. Hope to add one of the Treble boosters at some time in the future.
Yes exactly. It is always a question if you want to sound like how your hero sounded or how he wanted to sound. Blackmore might have been looking for the engl sound but we listened to him play a masrhall. Anyway I would have guessed the revival drive plexi setting sounded good. Thanks for the confirmation.
I can recommend the Fllynn "Hawk treble boost" made in Scotland by Steve Flynnn of Flynn Amps ...he is a genius with his amps and effects. Great video thanks 😊
Having the right amp, guitar, effects, pickups is very important but knowing how to play (like you) is the most important thing. Keep up the good work ❗👍👍👍
Your on screen comment-card about the catlinbread 'RB' pedals made me chuckle....u r correct, how they could call those 'RB' related is beyond me. They are almost the antithesis of an RB sound. I am sure you know about the Bernd Meisner E650 mod...I had that mod done to my engl and it makes a huge difference. They only trick is that the mod needs to be done to the earlier production run, like before 2013-ish as those amps still had the availability of the ultralinear output transformer taps, which is essential to that mod. (Ultralinear output tranny, like on a Marshall major). You could still do the mods to a new production e650 but you would have to replace the output transformer with an ultralinear capable one, thus greatly increasing the cost of the mod. The early production e650s already had an ultralinear capable output transformer in them, they just weren't wired to use them. Not sure if your engl RB is modded but if you can find somebody you trust to do the mod, the schematic is on the BSM site and is 100% worth doing. Bernd's mod delivers that big open sound where you don't need alot of gain to sound huge.
No my ENGL is stock (as far as I know, bought it used) and I talked to Bernd about the mods but I am not going to go though the trouble. It sounds pretty alright for what Blackmore used Engls for and I have my Marshalls so rather leave them doing best what they were intended. Anyway, I expect for example MIJ solos will not sound that good on Gigmaster, maybe with another pedal, 71/73 for example....thank for the video Adam
BSM is a german company as well so you can order directly. But I’d advise to get Max’s aiwa pedal, that is the best sounding in my opinion. At least on my rig, even the engl. But it is up to personal taste as well. You cannot go wrong with either. Also for the MIJ tones get a hornby skewes replica, Max makes one as well. But he is the USA so there’d be customs.
I am kinda torn between the Blackmore and Malmsteen scallop. I like the latter because it is very deep but the Blackmore’s shallower on the bass string side so it is somewhat easier to riff.
Yeah great ! Thanks for this ! It's intersting that you compare with the sv20 !
