A perfectly decent red planeswalker, best in aggro but playable in midrange. Neither underpowered nor overpowered, which, for Tibalt, is a minor miracle.
@@natejablonski Yep, it shows Tyvar Kell killing him in a card art but that's it. As far as I know it wasn't even mentioned in the story, which like sucks for a character literally impersonated the god of trickery. Like that's so cool but I digress.

As somebody who began their modern MTG journey using Simic and Mono Blue Fish I can say this came up very little. I think I saw it fizzle once in paper and counterspelled it/exhancged control of their Eldrazi with one of my fish more times than I ever lost to it. It was neat to see how the surface dwellers handled that!
Something to note: While Tibalts Trickery was never formally banned in standard, it **was** put into a special hell queue for BO1 arena, hard coded to punish Tibalts Trickery decks. You exclusively played against low curve aggro meta decks, particularly those with Thalia who autowon the matchup. It was an actual thing, not paranoia- to test it, I played 100 games in a row of BO1 with a Tibalts Trickery deck and faced 99 matches of mono white aggro and mono green aggro, the meta decks of the time, and 1 mirror match against trickery. Not a single game against midrange, control, tribal, memes, etc, when Goldspan Dragon was one of the most played cards of the format. Arena devs never said this part out loud but dayum did it make the deck impossible to play in standard
You forgot to mention that story literally killed Tibalt in the story at this time too, since story is written in advance of release by about the same time as it took for All will Be One to come out. Story killed him so this would never happen again.
SethronOlive, really love when you do story times like this. I love your gameplay content and articles, but this gives me such Rhystic Studies (TH-cam channel) vibes in the best possible way. It’s a nice shakeup from your normal videos. I hope you enjoy making these, and doing the research involved. Perfect digestible video run length too!
@ why? Seth’s normal content is typically gameplay videos. This is not his typical content type. It is, however, RhysticStudies content type. Two contrasting styles of videos, and Seth does a good job of stepping in a different direction when he decides to. I take more issue with you blinding rhinos, if I’m being quite frank.
I love Magic history so these are some of my favorite videos to make. They are just more time consuming so I can't really pump them our every other day like gameplay :)
It's funny because when this lottery deck came out, everyone was talking about it, complaining about it, and it got answered. And then the same thing happened to Geist of St Leyline. Another linear turn 1-2 win lottery deck. But Minion of the Mighty has been around since it's printing without a since mention in any B&R or discussion. It's the exact same playpattern. Every reason to ban Trickery and Geist applies to MotM but nothing has been done so it's a sizable chunk of the Historic Bo1 meta.
Makes me wonder how many players would stop grinding dailies or stop grinding dailies past 3-4 wins (I forget which) if it got nerfed enough. I'm only assuming it's not banned yet because it's just interruptible enough compared to Trickery and Geist Leyline.
Fantastic video, very fun seeing the old videos/comments from back in the day and the progression of trash (bad) to trash (unfun and busted) of young Tibs
I wasn't an active player during the period that Tibalt's Trickery decks were a thing in Modern, so this is the first I'm hearing of it but the effect it had on the game sounds a whole lot like what happened to me when I tried to get into Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel. When I started, I was a fairly new player to YGO, and I would rock up to low-level ranked games with a dogshit Blue Eyes deck and get absolutely bodied turn 0 by all manner of non-interactive combos. It happened enough times that I straight-up quit over it. I understood, on some level, that the deck I was playing wasn't competitive, so it wasn't just that I was losing--that's not the thing that bothered me. It's that I would lose before I got a chance to play my first card. Aggressively unfun gameplay patterns.
2:49 the worst part of white bordered Tibalt was that it wasn't even supposed to be there, it was an emergency replacement for a version of Squire made by Noah Bradley that had to be removed from the product as controversies surrounding the artist surged and WotC cut ties with him.
swear to gods, Arena should come up with a wheel of fortune style spinner for effects like these where you 'spin it to win it'. Optional of course, but anyone who uses cascade or other card deck spin effects, would likely use this EVERY time, just to be annoying.
Tibalt has always been one of my favorites. Best! Planeswalker! Ever! I played him in my Feldon of the Third Path deck. Because Feldon plays from the graveyard, the drawback of a random discard is negligible.
Don't forget that meme 97-land commander deck where you have The First Sliver as your commander, which cascades into Tibalt's Trickery, which casts Reshape the Earth for free, which grabs you 9 gates plus Maze's End!
lol I remember when Tibalt first came out I was obsessed with him. I was convinced that a 2 mana planeswalker couldn't not be broken.... It wasnt.... It was always bad.
7:23 why doesn't the second Tibalt's Trickery fully resolve and spin into another spell? It can't counter the first one unless it resolves, and if it resolves then the whole card happens. What am i missing? Like i get that it's resolving in the middle of the first one's effect, and there's a period after "counter target spell." But if countering the first one makes the second one impossible to have been cast in the first place... too bad, it's already been cast... right? Otherwise how could it resolve? Ruling the other way seems like introducing weird and unnecessary time reversal/paradox
The Jacob Wilson/Alexander Hayne troll video is an all timer. Highly recommend for anyone who hasn't seen it. Also I spot a link to one of my videos at 9:48 😃
The deck wasn't even good, the biggest problem was how quickly it won in bo1s on Arena - and how incredibly unfun it was to "play" against in Arena Standard. An actual game of Magic never took place, the opponent either mulliganed until they conceded or mulliganed into a TT + 0 mana creature, played both on turn 2 and then either essentially won on turn 2 or conceded.
I remember Tibalt was rhe first planesalker i pulled during a prerelease and I i thought it was the best card id wver pulled and ran it in RW Humans with the soulbounders with double strike and haste using Tibalt to discard humans to Angel of Glorys Rise to recur everything. Then realizing in the third round that it said "at random" and I immediately took him out.
I played Tibalt in modern dredge, looking for fun things to play after the Looting ban. He actually wasn’t bad. I even won a game with his ult. People didn’t respect him lol
The lack of respect is real. I made a Legion of Doom style deck back when he first came out (Superfriends, but Grixis colored and control heavy) and my most memorable win for him was definitely when a mono white token deck combo'd out hard while I had Tibalt ready to ult. The player, who was overall a very good and competent player, wiped out all the other players in the big multi-man game because he had to leave one person alive. So he killed my Liliana of the Veil but left me alive cause 'all you have is Tibalt man, you're already suffering enough' cause he thought so little of Tibalt he didn't even bother learning what his ult was. Come my turn, I ult'd Tibalt, took his many many MANY big tokens and wiped him out with his own board. I laughed so hard at that and he did too. Every game he ever played against two mana Tibalt after that though, he KoS the devilish bastard, lmao. He learnt that respect.
Tibalt has found a home in my treason deck for the mass insurrection ability and its ability to exist as a meme gives it the superpower of nobody really feeling the need to attack it 😂
Yeah, i got to make a Tibalt deck in arena before it got banned. It was gross. It wasn't uncommon for me to mulligan down to two cards just to get it in my opening hand, but as long as it did, i won. It's no wonder this thing got banned and honestly, as much fun as i did have with it, i'm glad that it did because it was unhealthy for the game.
I find it amazing that nobody feels the need to point out that the original interpretation, where you can Cascade into either side of an MDFC as long as you could pay for the 'front' side was a non-sense ruling designed to create this problem. While it isn't that notable, Tibalt did get a card in War of the Spark that has a nice ability to shut down your opponent's life gain.
