Two forward, half back (to clear the swarf), and use Engineers Cutting Grease ...or you will get junky uneven threads and blunt a tool

Have one of these sets. Sorry to say found pretty useless for tapping new blind threads in steel. The cutting edges immediately blunted with very moderate hand pressure and never got a bite.
OK for cleaning existing threads but utterly useless for new builds. I am a reasonably experienced engineer/mechanic and only bought these for a quick away from home job. Should not have been impatient and waited till could use my normal better equipment.

When re-threading a rusty M5 (M5x0.8) bolt, should I use a M6 (M6x1.0) threading pin or do I maybe need to go two steps higher? (M5 and M6 has different thread stepping, 0.8 and 1.0, does that matter?)

Buy quality taps and run them in the battery screwdriver =) much faster, a bit forward, little back...then again forward and so on :)
