    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Viper (Tom Skerritt) tells Maverick (Tom Cruise) the truth about his father's death in combat; Maverick considers his future.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

uncoolbeans Even now, one can gain confidence, but only if one has the resilience and inner fortitude to practice. All we have now are because of people who were confident enough to build things that we now enjoy... or take for granted if we choose. If we take things for granted, that’s it... no improvement. If we build upon what has been given us, perhaps one day our reach will not extend just to the sky, but beyond it.

/ AirForce counterparts they deserve the proficiency bonuses as their skills do not come off the street everyday! It takes a ton of academic and other security qualifications along with Class 1 A Flight Physical to qualify. The pride of me seeing these men and women cannot be measured. They are the nation's best and they make us proud everyday along with all other in different jobs. A aircraft carrier is a floating city. We do more before 5a.mm.than what most people do all day! Did you hear the true story of Tony Scott wanting to get the perfect angle (sun in the background) for the iconic opening scene, particularly when one of the jets lands on the aircraft carrier? The military had done their job and couldn't continue to cruise in the carrier, unless the producers paid thousands of dollars more for reimbursement. Tony forked up over $10,000 of his own money so they would keep cruising for another 15 minutes and get many of those awesome shots.

“Up there we gotta push it… that’s our job.”
It’s the way Viper says it and the way that Tom Skerritt acts that gives me chills
It adds so much more depth to a relatively simple and potentially cheesy line
He looks up at the sky during the pause, almost wistfully
But the way his tone is so… distant, and kind of somber, you can tell he’s thinking about what exactly that means to a pilot
Putting everything on the line and praying that it works out
Because he brings it back to reality with the last part of the sentence, you can hear it in his voice; much more grounded and present
It is their job, in the sense of how it pays the bills and also because if they don’t? At best it means their death, at worst it means the deaths of other innocent people
Hats off to the writers, director, and especially Tom Skerritt
