Iceman was the better technical "by the book" pilot who could maintain his nerve to the end all without losing his cool (thus the moniker of "ICEMAN!"), yet Maverick's fearlessly & brazenly improvisational creativity during the most heated & perilous combat scenarios was totally unmatched, as it WAS THAT which enabled both him & Iceman to prevail in the end (granted Iceman's dogged tenacity all while badly outnumbered by several swarming MIGs was truly amazing & key to their ultimate victory, a clear cut indication of his revered TOPGUN Champ Status!). Definitely a joint team effort, though Maverick's quick thinking badassery, superlative aerial stunts & outstanding dogfighting skills saved the day (natural abilities that not even Iceman could emulate)!
It's just like Stinger says before he sends Maverick and Goose to Top Gun: "You a hell of an instinctive pilot. Maybe too good!" His clearly amazing skills were only held back by his ego. I personally think losing Goose made him a better pilot by checking his ego a bit.
One of Viper's deleted voice lines in Titanfall 2 says "Viper is supersonic, ETA twenty seconds", and now I know where it comes from. :) Hell, his entire character and his voice lines as well as his mannerisms are inspired by Top Gun. XD
This was years before they could use CGI. All they had were some footage of real aircraft flying, and some practical effects that they made using models. They combined all of that with some clever editing to create a realistic looking dogfight scene. These types of special effects are a dying art.
Thats why it was so good, it also was one of the navy, marines and airforce greatest recruiting sell. It reminds me of avatar, as watchers actually wanted to go to Pandora! LOL

Merlin always was underrated. He had balls to fly with two unconfident and unbalanced pilots (Cougar, Maverick). And he was the voice of pure, logical and cold reason

The F-5, being sort of an "every-jet" shape and significantly smaller than the F-14, was a pretty logical substitute for the fictional(by necessity) MiG 28. Is there another fighter you'd rather they'd used as a substitute?

Such a great movie but watching this at 42 and having been a pilot for 20 years, compared to being 10 or 12 when I watched it my first time, it feels so different and I noticed quite a few issues with. Like after they shut down the right engine, they get hit again and the line is, "It's okay, both engines are still going" (paraphrase).
My issue is that MiGs (IRL MiG-29) of that era tend to have 30mm single barrel rotary cannons. In film, they depict two wing root mounted Gatling cannons. On a plane as small as an F-5E. Going back to my first issue... How many hits did Iceman take? If those were .30 calibre or maybe .50 at most, they might have survived that many hits. Even them, it's a stretch to remain in a dogfight. Russian 30mm cannon? That many hits would leave his plane worse than Hollywood's.
"Hammer drop on the PIN! Clip phase on the top! Bank right, slingshot engage!!" and I love how they say "FIRING!!! Oh and when he says "ON THREE" and says "THREE, 2 1" lolololol lol. Movie talk
They had to bring the F-14 again because the F-18 is not has beautifull or have an agressive shape, like the Tomcat! Even that it was a CGI scene, it was a bliss to watch it fly and fighting again!!

I was confused when I first saw this movie because I knew the “MiGs” are American made, Northrop F-5 “Freedom Fighters”. The better known 2-seat version is the T-38 supersonic trainer.
At the :20 point, the line on screen is wrong. If you look up the script online, the line was apparently "lead MIG is coming into guns range." (although it sounds like " ... holding in the guest range." It is said fast enough it's hard to understand in that scene.
what I just said. Maybe during WW2 dogfights happened this way but not with current avionics. Like the iraqi war, it happened miles apart from one another. The new raptors is just all a.i. anyway. Hell, the plane can fly without a person in the seat if they wanted it to.
Far as i can tell their only carrying sidewinders. Mav fires 5 missiles so i could be mistaken but I never see any sparrows. I’m also not sure as to the state of IFF so you’d have the issue of hitting a friendly BVR
The F-14 would also have the very long range Phoenix missle. The Sparrows range is much less than Phoenix. No guns on the F-14. Most missle shots look like sidewinders.
I was thinking Libyan, possibly because we had a short skirmish between the Libyan Air Force and the United States Navy in the 1980s and Libya had MiGs in that Dogfight, but close enough.
IIRC, the Phoenix had a pretty poor record. I don’t think it was that good at shooting down enemy fighters. It was meant to hit bombers from long range.

Top Gun referred to the antagonists as simply "the enemy". In 1986 we would assume the ussr. The movie and the sequel left it up to the audience though as what country they are fighting at the end.
Ice Man’s plane’s right engine was hit by gunfire and it was shutdown. A bit later the plane was hit by more gunfire and the navigator stated both engines were functional🤔

I was confused when I first saw this movie because I knew the “MiGs” are American made, Northrop F-5 “Freedom Fighters”. The better known 2-seat version is the T-38 supersonic trainer.
Everyone: A great action flick for its day. It's fine just like it is, no need for a sequel.

Aliens, Godfather: Part 2, Rocky 2, Empire Strikes Back, The Two Towers: It looks like another great film sequel joins the ranks.
Except TopGun: Maverick is reportedly even better
At the :20 point, the line on screen is wrong. If you look up the script online, the line was apparently "lead MIG is coming into guns range." (although it sounds like " ... holding in the guest range." It is said fast enough it's hard to understand in that scene.
Oh my god, when I see this movie, I feel like I'm in an F-14 Tomcat...BEST MOVIE OF THE DECADE.

what I just said. Maybe during WW2 dogfights happened this way but not with current avionics. Like the iraqi war, it happened miles apart from one another. The new raptors is just all a.i. anyway. Hell, the plane can fly without a person in the seat if they wanted it to.
Far as i can tell their only carrying sidewinders. Mav fires 5 missiles so i could be mistaken but I never see any sparrows. I’m also not sure as to the state of IFF so you’d have the issue of hitting a friendly BVR

The F-14 would also have the very long range Phoenix missle. The Sparrows range is much less than Phoenix. No guns on the F-14. Most missle shots look like sidewinders.

I was thinking Libyan, possibly because we had a short skirmish between the Libyan Air Force and the United States Navy in the 1980s and Libya had MiGs in that Dogfight, but close enough.

The F-14 was armed with the Phoenix missile system. It could engage a target 125 miles out. Unfortunately, they never fired one in battle!
IIRC, the Phoenix had a pretty poor record. I don’t think it was that good at shooting down enemy fighters. It was meant to hit bombers from long range.
And by "they" you mean US Navy; the F-14D and Phoenix combo did register a kill, but that was with Iranian AF (LoL)

Top Gun referred to the antagonists as simply "the enemy". In 1986 we would assume the ussr. The movie and the sequel left it up to the audience though as what country they are fighting at the end.

with the same plane.

In the second movie his first kill was in a 18 the other was a 14

Ice Man’s plane’s right engine was hit by gunfire and it was shutdown. A bit later the plane was hit by more gunfire and the navigator stated both engines were functional🤔
They shut it off to extinguish the fire then turn it on again like the F-18 Bird Strike scene
