Maverick may be the protagonist, but Ice really held off five fighters single-handedly
That's why Iceman wins TOPGUN trophy and Mav was close second
They're both great pilots
Though when it mattered the most, when the heat was on & the when the stakes couldn't be any higher Maverick was in a league all his own & simply the best of the best at dogfighting (sort of like Tom Brady playing under intense pressure during certain closely contested Super Bowl games!).
Iceman was the better technical "by the book" pilot who could maintain his nerve to the end all without losing his cool (thus the moniker of "ICEMAN!"), yet Maverick's fearlessly & brazenly improvisational creativity during the most heated & perilous combat scenarios was totally unmatched, as it WAS THAT which enabled both him & Iceman to prevail in the end (granted Iceman's dogged tenacity all while badly outnumbered by several swarming MIGs was truly amazing & key to their ultimate victory, a clear cut indication of his revered TOPGUN Champ Status!).
Definitely a joint team effort, though Maverick's quick thinking badassery, superlative aerial stunts & outstanding dogfighting skills saved the day (natural abilities that not even Iceman could emulate)!

It's just like Stinger says before he sends Maverick and Goose to Top Gun: "You a hell of an instinctive pilot. Maybe too good!" His clearly amazing skills were only held back by his ego. I personally think losing Goose made him a better pilot by checking his ego a bit.
One last thing, who’s the better pilot, you or me?
Merlin's "You're gonna do what?" is the best line in the whole movie. It still makes me crack me up every time I hear it.
especially the crack in his voice. Every time I see Tim Robbins, I can only think of Merlin or Ebby Calvin 'Nuke' LaLoosh.

One of Viper's deleted voice lines in Titanfall 2 says "Viper is supersonic, ETA twenty seconds", and now I know where it comes from. :) Hell, his entire character and his voice lines as well as his mannerisms are inspired by Top Gun. XD

Merlin always was underrated. He had balls to fly with two unconfident and unbalanced pilots (Cougar, Maverick). And he was the voice of pure, logical and cold reason

This was years before they could use CGI. All they had were some footage of real aircraft flying, and some practical effects that they made using models. They combined all of that with some clever editing to create a realistic looking dogfight scene. These types of special effects are a dying art.
go see the new movie. This clip is great but the new movie puts it to shame.
You’re half correct my friend. They very well could have used CGI as it was first used in the 70s.
Thats why it was so good, it also was one of the navy, marines and airforce greatest recruiting sell. It reminds me of avatar, as watchers actually wanted to go to Pandora! LOL

when i was 15 myself and my 2 best friends obsessed over this movie lol....we scoured the military surplus stores, brought the flight jackets, sowed on the patches, got the fake service rings, the ray bans, the hanes white beefy tees and levis 501's.....my 2 besties even brought motorcycles, i crashed one of theirs of course. it seemed like endless summers of laughing, goofing and trying to discover girls. i choked up so many times watching maverick top gun without you guys. RIP my 2 amigos ill never forget yous and how it was.
My brother was in the Marines at Miramar when this came out. I had several real Marines shirts with Tomcats on them.

@@ZGundam83 the F14 in the new film was CGI. The navy retired them in 2006, and the only operator of them today is Iran.
The 2nd movie is just as good. I can't wait until it comes out on Blu-ray. Watching these back to back will be epic!

Tony Scott's visual style stayed consistent throughout his career. This could easily exist in the same universe as Crimson Tide.

"Talk to me Goose" best line ever.
By far the best line in all of cinema, music, books...or history! Better than Neil Armstrong's "One small step" speech or Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. I mean...the depth.....the absolute POWER...of the words "Talk......to....me....Goose". So deep....so so intellectual and mind-blowing. Hands down the most powerful and moving words ever spoken by any human, ever. lololololol 😐

The best line of this whole scene
Such a great movie but watching this at 42 and having been a pilot for 20 years, compared to being 10 or 12 when I watched it my first time, it feels so different and I noticed quite a few issues with. Like after they shut down the right engine, they get hit again and the line is, "It's okay, both engines are still going" (paraphrase).
My issue is that MiGs (IRL MiG-29) of that era tend to have 30mm single barrel rotary cannons. In film, they depict two wing root mounted Gatling cannons. On a plane as small as an F-5E.
Going back to my first issue... How many hits did Iceman take? If those were .30 calibre or maybe .50 at most, they might have survived that many hits. Even them, it's a stretch to remain in a dogfight.
Russian 30mm cannon? That many hits would leave his plane worse than Hollywood's.

I can't seem to ignore the fact that the "migs" they refer to are actually american-made Northrop F-5 Tigers depicted here. But otherwise, still a great scene!
Well, the production team couldn't exactly ask the USSR to lend them real MiGs...
It was literally impossible at the time for them to have used actual Soviet jets to fight against. The F-5, being sort of an "every-jet" shape and significantly smaller than the F-14, was a pretty logical substitute for the fictional(by necessity) MiG 28. Is there another fighter you'd rather they'd used as a substitute?
I would use F-86.

I can’t tell you how many times I pulled that maneuver in combat flight sims. It works every time.

that was the best part of the movie to me F-14 will always be my favorite
They had to bring the F-14 again because the F-18 is not has beautifull or have an agressive shape, like the Tomcat!
Even that it was a CGI scene, it was a bliss to watch it fly and fighting again!!

It’s interesting if you pay attention, all of the acting is done in a close shot, in a small container, and only with their eyes. That’s it. Rest of the face is concealed. No body movement or exteriors. It’s shots of their eyes intercut with shots of planes flying, and it goes on for three minutes and it works.
At the 20 second mark it should read "The lead mig is closing into guns range" meaning it was getting close enough to fire. Also they say "splash" and not scratch when getting a kill.
I once read that the original script included dialogue scenes with the enemy pilots but that these were cut out before filming. Not sure how true that is.
In part 2 Maverick must deal with Su-57s. Good luck with that!

Top Gun referred to the antagonists as simply "the enemy". In 1986 we would assume the ussr. The movie and the sequel left it up to the audience though as what country they are fighting at the end.
Ice Man’s plane’s right engine was hit by gunfire and it was shutdown. A bit later the plane was hit by more gunfire and the navigator stated both engines were functional🤔
They shut it off to extinguish the fire then turn it on again like the F-18 Bird Strike scene
