Iceman isn't flashy, he's just reliable, studious, safe and consistent every time. Whereas maverick is daring, unpredictable and talented that is why Iceman found him difficult to co-exist with, as he represents too much danger and therefore should have no place in the air. Very well acted by both men.
Seeing this movie within the overall story that Top Gun Maverick brought, along with all of the callbacks in the scenes and in-film references, is awesome. Seeing Maverick as the student here and then an instructor post-first instructor attempt is perfect

Goose did a hell of a job reading the room here - he realized that Maverick's sizing the room up and his bravado with Viper was only going to cause problems with everybody else, and as soon as Iceman fires a verbal shot, Goose deploys a hilariously fake laugh that breaks all the tension in the room; even Iceman smiles. Nice going, indeed.
What I find somewhat funny is how 'rank' means nothing in "Top Gun" and most movies: you can be an O-1/O-2 and talk any way you want to an O-3, for example. I never experienced that - sure, there was joking around but there's a level of respect rendered even if someone is only 1 rank above - even if you're both below 'field grade.'
