    A series hybrid. The rotary engine is perfectly suited to this role. Found its niche at last. It is only a part time engine, being used occasionally. Most people will charge the batteries.

      Opposite. Best is diesel and battery. Gas engines are useless for hybrids becasue in city it uses electrycity and on highway diesel is way more efficient. Wanel is the worst efficient engine out gas engines, the weight does not add benefits its suited for motorbikes not cars. Their efficiencies are 30% wankel, 35% gas, 50% diesel, 100% electric.

    I live in a condo and cannot install a home charger and I would have to drive through an hour of Bangkok traffic to reach a charge station so hybrid was my only option. I really like the simplicity of an all electric with built in gas-powered charger. Even if you never connect to a charger, the car gets 120 kpl or 283 miles per gallon. Not everyone has the ability to have their own charger so this will appeal to a much broader market.

    I really hope we see this as a 2 rotor in a new RX vehicle. Or if we don't, I'm really curious to see these housings & rotors start getting in the hands of tuners. More displacement per rotor is always appreciated, and the higher compression could mean better fuel economy and naturally aspirated power.

      This is a series Hybrid, so the rotary engine here is just used as a range extender for the electric motor. I dont think that the rotary engine will be used for the propulsion of the car sadly, just as a generator really.

    • @EastWood2004
      @EastWood2004 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rotor will then spend more time to charge and assist some kinetic movement.

    The rotary is such a good idea for a PHEV. They major downside of PHEVs is the dead weight of the combustion powertrain so if it can be made as light as possible, that will also increase the range in EV mode. Having driven a Prius Prime, its a great car but it feels a bit silly carrying around a full-size engine that does absolutely nothing but weigh the car down until it's needed. I think this car has a great formula. The battery is not too large that the car is too heavy and it gets totally adequate range for most drives but it has the rotary as a backup and for longer hauls, but it weighs far less than a piston engine. If they have solved lubrication for this engine, they have a winner I think. I see mass-market potential for this powertrain for sure.

Ridiculous that you have to open the front doors in order to open a back door, and the rear legroom is only suited for a preteen. Even a 13 year old will struggle to fit in the back

      Fuel consumption is comparable to piston engines so I have read. But it is very smooth, light and small. So, when running on battery power alone, there is less weight to pull improving fuel consumption to a heavy piston engined series hybrid when running from the battery alone. Excellent advantage.
      Being only a _part time_ engine, the fuel consumption is not that important as rarely will the car be used using the petrol rotary engine opposed to running off the battery. Typical overall annual fuel running costs, electricity and petrol purchased, is what matters.

      It doesn’t have two rotors - just one single Wankel rotor. Those two shiny things you see towards the back of the engine are the electricity generators.
      There could be two of them; one for charging the traction battery on the fly and the other for providing electric power to the traction motors - this is conjecture - but those are definitely two generators you’re looking at.
      I also suspect one of them is capable of reversing polarity and acting as a powerful starter for the rotary engine itself.
      Like the Prius (which doesn’t have a conventional starter motor like ordinary cars) you will never hear this vehicle making the chattering starter motor noise like ordinary cars.
      Fascinating! I suspect Mazda might be still keeping some secrets back - until the MX-30 R-EV is launched.
      I used to have a Mazda MX-3 which I drove for 8.5 years. Mazda were surprisingly very quiet about the vehicle’s built in passive rear wheel steer - probably for insurance reasons at the time - but the coupe DID have it and it actually worked a treat at speed!

      Several years ago Mazda had an EV that nobody wanted, so they built a range extender generator . I went to the Detroit auto show and it was on display , very similar to what is in this video - I am almost sure it was a dual rotor Wankel rotating the 2 rotors / shiny things in the video . Took me a second to realize it was Too Big ; - electric vehicles should have a Really small ice engine to heat antifreeze and generate electricity .
