I owned this car for 14 months, and drive 10000 miles a year. It's far from the best EV out there, but it also one of the cheapest! And the amount of comfort, quality and convenience you get here is unheard of in my opinion. The random charms are due to change in road, temperature, and weather conditions, and you can see it in the dash. The temperature will flash briefly, and mostly happens in the winther. I definitely for good reason have more experience in this car. - I hate the doors in tight spaces. - I can get 39 kw/h when I ccs charge. But need to unplug/replug when the car suddenly decides to go down to 17 kw/h or even lower! Mazda have tried several updateds to my car to fix this. - This car is safe! I feel very safe in this car, and it has braked or even avoided other cars on the road doing stupid things. - Great stereo, only the top of the line mini with jbl options will beat the bose of the Mazda. - Mazda have great service compared to mg/bmw/kia/Tesla. I've can only talk about personal experiences gained from friends and family and there evs. Mazda Denmark even sent information to Japan, and have fixed issues fairly quickly. -no spiderwebs here. It's a great car, with lots and lots to offer. BUT! Short range, "smart doors" and slow ccs is the most important thing in an ev, and unfortunately it's the mx-30's biggest weakness. I love this car however, and i wouldn't change it for anything other than a used Tesla S/3/Y for my pricebraket. Hope this helps! Br, Frej, Denmark. 🇩🇰
Thanks for sharing. I'm hearing from as many genuine/good sources as possible before this EV launches in my country later this year. Agree, Mazdas are reliable, economical, safe (well equipped), not expensive to maintain, well built (and smartly designed with the driver+simplicity in mind), the attention to detail is fantastic, have desired badges and have become more luxurious lately, etc. I have owned 4 different Mazda models since the 80s, and currently have the BT-50 as a company car (so 5th), even though it was built by and with Ford. Looking for a smaller city SUV that will be mainly used just around the city, and we usually carry 2 people max, so the MX-30 is high on my list now, and we even decided to skip the CX-30 for this 🙏👍😸
Mostly driving alone, or with a single passenger. With cargo with backseats down, or small children the doors are brilliant! But I'm not carrying many goods in the car daily. Best of luck. 🤞
@@Sjokoting Thanks, yeah, agree. Imho the MX-30 is better suited as a complimentary car to most families/couples - who already have a larger car with longer range. Size: we are smaller sized SEAsians 😸 and even this size car is considered a medium where I am, cause the population of the cities are huge and spaces tight. Design: I love the doors and design, as they have adapted the coupe-ish RX-8 design onto their first EV and a SUV at that 👍 The CX-30 hybrid and (super clean) diesels are there, and Mazda's partner (Toyota) new 4 door EV SUV for those who want something larger, that shares many similar positive attributes. I'm sure Mazda would release a larger size 4-door EV SUV with longer range in the future, so this is a good start for Mazda imho... But ⭐ it depends where in the world you live, and what your needs are. Many global car models have this issue, not like say a JDM or US specifically designed model.
Hi from Australia. Got hold of my MX 30 4 months ago, top spec only sold here. Test drive convinced me of it’s positive aspects and the only Japanese model available as Toyota don’t do EV yet & Honda e has not been mentioned yet for import officially. Quality right up there with any Japanese product. Ride & handling excellent in all conditions with noise levels very low. Comfort, entry & exit from front seats very good for someone recovering from cancer treatment. Equipment level very comprehensive. Range not an issue. Can get to medical appointments on one charge two and quarter hour trip, recharge 32- 38 minutes for return with 35 -50 kilometre range in hand on return. One of the best I’ve owned.
We have had this car now for around 6 months, so plenty of time to get to know it. After the initial period of range anxiety, of around a month, mainly around the lack of fast chargers, where we live, its now not a problem. I do around 100 miles a day in it, and its not a problem. We do now have a home charge point, which helps. Before we purchased this car, we test drove a large number of EV's around this price, and some more expensive ones to boot, and none of them were what we we would call, drivers cars. Yes it has its negatives, but what cars don't. We haven't come across this "bong" noise, so not sure what that would be, lol. As for range, ours for some reason, charges to a max of 136 miles, then progressively, looses a few miles every day, till it gets down to around the 112 mile mark, before on its next charge, goes back up to the low to middle 130's. It doesn't seem to matter what the weather is doing at the time or how I drive, its what it does. Yes it would/might be a better car if it had more range, but I doubt it would be the car it is now, in that its a great car to drive, agile, and light. Comme ci, comme ça
My peugeot e2008 never goes above 165 mile range, and usually shows 154 miles ...had it 2 years so 130 odd on the maxda is not a disaster compared and maxda a good bit cheaper..does the maxda have a heat pump?
I love my MX 30! We purchased it last Nov and we are almost at 2k miles now. I don’t have any issues. It is smooth on the freeway too. Before, i was worried about the range but it turns out the range was just enough for my day to day travels. We have another car for long travel. As to the doors, me and my small kid are used to it now and we know what to do when the parking space is narrow :) I like the features and navigating through the settings. I easily get overwhelmed with too many touch screens. I am happy with this car :)
Random Bong: 4 degrees Celsius warning with a snowflake on the dashboard. This is the one which is wanted. Another one wanted is - you're in ACC mode and stopped at a light - the car in front of you starts off, the bong tells you to GOOOOO... ;) Third one, which isn't necessarilly intentional - if you have carplay and google maps hangs itself partially the random bong is every time google attempts to share directions with you ;)
We just got one, and we love it. Our need is 60-120km (40-80 miles) per day, and need 2 cars anyway, so we have a diesel with 1000km range for the long tripps or when the whole family needs to fit. Fun to drive, really nice quality, and looks cool to!
Have had the MX30 for around 5 months now and just clocked over 7.5k miles. The random bongs you are hearing are the car notifying you the speed limit for the road you are on has changed and that you are currently over the posted limit. For example, driving on the motorway and coming off onto a minor road, speed limit changed from 70 to 50. You are reducing speed but hit the 50 zone at say 55, that's when you'll get the bong. Hope that helps to clear any confusion!
I’ve owned my Mazda MX-30 since last March and I have enjoyed driving it everywhere, the random bong I found out is the temperature when it’s under 4°C. I live in a apartment and the landlord dose not allow me use of the carpark sockets and won’t allow chargers to be installed. This has left me using solely public chargers and so far it’s been fine with the Mazda, I don’t think about range I think about the where the needle is from full to empty. My furthest drive was 135Km on a single charger and that was cutting it close and doing purely motorway driving of 120kmph, this got me most of the way to Galway from Dublin, I charged then stopped for launch and a off again it only took 35 min to get from 20% - 80%. Really do recommend this car.
We're retired. We drive around 3k-4k miles per annum. We don't drive long distances (we take a train and get a hire car if necessary). We have a charger at home. We hardly ever charge away from home. The small battery also makes the car more efficient - you're not carting around a big heavy battery for relatively short journeys. Now that Mazda have finally (after 18 months) sorted out (it seems) the annoying door rattle, we're really happy with the Mazda MX-30. It suits our lifestyle and might just be the last car we ever buy. The doors are annoying if we have passengers. We agree about the frunk - Mazda didn't really put much thought into the "design for living"; the cables take up quite a bit of room in the boot - and most of the time, for us, they're redundant. We'd also like a warning if the 12V battery is getting low on charge - when we first had the car we were caught out if we turned off the main battery but kept the air conditioning on (e.g. waiting outside at a medical appointment). The car is nice to drive - the best I've ever had - I would never go back to a petrol car. The position of the charging port is not ideal; it would be better nearer the front of the car in my opinion. And yes, it would be better if the battery could be charged quicker - although it's never been an issue for us, we like tea and cakes.
@3:04...all that space..is for a reason...I heard that Mazda did that so as to fit a little petrol rotary engine as a range extender (as in the BMW i3). The idea was to obviously extend the range of the car and their thinking was why carry extra weight for range you hardly ever use.
I'm the owner of a 2023 Mazda MX-30 GS as my first EV because I like the look & finish and the way it handles. Price wise, it's pretty good as Mazda offers a 4000$ rebate and another 12000$ in rebates from the federal & provincial governments (Quebec, Canada). I have to say I use it as a second vehicle to do all my shopping/groceries/meetings etc... all within 40 km from my house and I won't use it during winter time (October 31 to may 01). I understand the range is said to be 160 km but I've done more than 180 km on rural roads & city roads and it was showing15% left! But if you're looking for a primary vehicle for all year around, you should consider an EV with a 360 km minimum range knowing that in winter time when it's really cold (-20c +), you'll be using "heating/heated seats/heated streering etc..." which will have a negative impact on the range (minus 40% +) and it will take longer to charge. 😊 Average 15.9 kwh but I keep my speed within 15 km/h of speed limit. 😊
good review! I ordered one for myself! I wait for August to receive it. I live on an island and I can't imagine a better car for my needs. really, it's not all about speed or range. This is a car with an excellent value for money. I'm a little annoyed, those revues, where cars are redicuralized based on aspects that are far from defining a car by itself. hug from the Azores Portugal
the random "bong" !, could be when passing 4 degrees celsuis, all Mazda do this.. So I had like 8 Mazda's that past 8 years and I like this due to that all the different cars are the same with the environment inside, however some stuff really is anoying. in Mx-30 if you left padle twice to get more regeneration, that will reset everytime you restart or put in reverse, I REALLY like to have regeneration all the time
We have had a MX30 since Sept and for around town driving it’s fine. Pretty well spec’d and with a home EV charger rarely use one of the street chargers.
I have one and thought it was bad but it’s brilliant except the range and the annoying back doors. It’s even very very spacious at the back despite the doors. My boys are 6.1” tall and they fit perfectly at the back, even better than my old Mercedes . I love except the rear doors
I have a Mitsubishi I-miev. It's 12 years old. One cell, that's right just one cell dropped. It has only ever been recharged from a normal 240 volt household socket (Australia). I was getting over 100 Kms range (16.5kw) battery. I can put a new 30kw battery in it. But the cost is way up there. But the range goes up to 250 Kms easy. Some say 270kms. I know that's more than enough for me here in Sydney. So it's a choice. Sell it with a few new cells and use that money and the money I would pay for the new battery plus another $15,000 and buy a new EV. But here's the thing. Most cars depreciate at $100 per week or more. But the i-miev is already depreciated to its maximum. So the depreciation would be just the battery now. That's about $25 per week over the next 10 years. So is it a good idea for people to buy a used EV cheap and put a new battery in it. Because you are saving at least $75 per week. That's over 300% saving. This never dawns on anyone on the internet making TH-cam vids etc. Nobody at all. Anywhere. But I have. Why is it just me that thinks of this. Or am I wrong somewhere. Plus it will save a lot of EVs ending up on the scrap heap. And it's good for the environment. Not that many people care about the environment it seems these days. Particularly here in Australia. What do you think?
i have bought a used mx30 here in germany for 16000eur, and i also have a i miev. but the cost for the new i miev battery are to expensive. i like the mx30 and if there will be a battery upgrade i wuold buy this for my mx30
If they ever get around to fitting the range extender then this car will be a winner. I do lots of local driving but, here and there, I do long range trips. Seems like the best compromise to me in a sub £30K car. I had this car out on the one day test drive and loved it.
The random bongs could be the seatbelt warning if you've got a bag on one of the other seats. My workbag would sometimes trigger the warning on my last car. It could also be a temperature warning.
The bongs are, in my case, a warning by the car which detected that I am not holding the steering wheel stable enough. On the mid display an orange steering wheel shows up to call me to order :). The two key annoyances I found on this car are the doors, which only have disadvantages, and the slow charging speed. 200 km range (in Summer) is enough and fast chargers are plenty in NL (but not when you cross the border). But fast charging on the Mazda is in reality medium fast/slow charging. In addition, I found in Summer the battery running too hot after multiple fast charges.
Hi, mine was delivered yesterday. Lovely. However if the range was on average 124 miles when charged to 80 % it would be better. It was approaching the busiest part of rush hour when I left Mazda Solihull. In heavy stop start traffic I watched my predicted range increase. Had I chosen to go the long way back on the motorway it would have been a very different story. It is definitely a city run-a-round for those living ke me with a home charger and doing less than 5,000 miles per year.
Random bongs are the lane assist picking remnants of road works lines etc. We get them a lot on trucks. It has been standard in trucks after Mercedes s class well before other car brands. Gen 1 brake and land assist would try to apply emergency brakes with shadows in some random scenarios. Tandem for the review as am looking into getting this for the Mrs. Finally going electric. Cheers
Thanks Electricfying 🙏 I'm hearing from as many genuine/good sources as possible before this EV launches in my (SEAsian) country later this year. I own an mx30 gasoline version and plan to trade it in for an electric once the range extender will be available. I love the G-vectoring and the comfortable and chic interiors. That annoying bong maybe the sensor that detects your eyes to prevents you from dozing off when driving. So I was told.
Very true, I am driving MX-30 for a while now and yet to meet it on the road! I live in Cambridgeshire and drive at least 5 days per week for 60 miles daily.☺☺. This car is soooooo misunderstood
This is a great follow up review, with kids and a dog it’s really hard to tell which electric cars will actually work with a car seat or dog crate in the boot! (Not that this one will… holding out for an Enyaq!)
I know what the phantom bong is!!! We have a CX3 and we get the random bong - we've found it is a faulty rear seat passenger sensor - it is bonging because it thinks there is a passenger in a seat without a seatbelt on!
That's certainly one of the bongs - on a hilly road when the temperature is between 4 and 5°C it will constantly do it. But it's also happened in summer. And there is only the one bong for all the warnings so it's confusing!
I really really really like the design of both the in and outside, I like the doors, I like the coupé shape, and I like it not shouting ev. But.... The battery needs to be bigger, on par with the Cupra's 58kwh, and I'd have gone for this over the Cupra. This and the Cupra are the only two EVs in sale (outside of the locked away Chinese cars) that I actually like the design of.
Random bong could be warning of speed cameras. My Auris bongs when one is near by. I am looking/thinking of the mx30 But my trip to work is 34 miles and has a lot of up and down hills. (The down hill tends to charge my auris battery xD) I only travel futher once awhile down south or up north (once year ) but an MG and Nissan leaf is in the same price range..the kit and looks of the mx are better though
Speed recognition system and it's likely set for 0mph or 5mph over that speed. My wife hates it. Never a problem with me as I use cruise control. At least thus is my experience on my CX 5
The phantom bong beats me too. It has obviously got something to do with the navigation system. The bongs always occur at the same places in the roads. I found nothing on the several fora I queried.A map update did not remove the bongs, and I doubt whther it has anything to do with thr Road-sign recognition system.
random bongs in my Auris are down to speed cameras and known speed traps transmitted through the satnav ... its the speedtrap bong when there is nowt there which is amusing
Yep. I would buy it if it had around 55kW and +300km autonomy with one charge. The reason is that we do now have enough charging infrastructure here in our city and its outskirts. other than that, I think the MX-30 is very capable and good looking EV.
From what I have heard. It's getting rotary engine with it so the range should be lot better and this is the reason why engine room is so empty in the EV version. But I simply don't like the back doors design that cannot open the window.
What about when you’re in a small car space at Tesco, you open the front door, then the back door, and get the kids out… then you’re all trapped between the doors and the other car next to you, and you can’t escape.
As much as I applaud Mazda for creating something different in their small EV offering - being a BMW i3 owner, I appreciate 'quirkiness' - at 1720kg (according to EV-Database) trying to convince the buying public that their 33kWh battery model is 'right-sized' so it's lighter, is, quite frankly, utter bunkum...! For example, again according to EV-Database, the Renault Zoe with its 55kWh battery is a mere 1577kg by comparison - so, 143kg lighter than the 'right-sized' Mazda MX30, but with nearly twice the battery capacity...! 🤔
In Australia, this car is more expensive than a model 3 rear wheel drive, packing an lfp battery-capable of 400kms on one charge. MX30 will be the modern Edsel.
I thought this car was really designed with a rotary range extender engine in mind and in this case it would improve it. I don't really like the way it looks though and a year old Zoe ZE50 seems a much better choice to me.
In 2015 I purchased a second hand Renault Kangoo EV.... Brilliant spacious 5 seater EV! But the more we used it the more we were crippled by the 120 mile range. In the end we gave up on EV's ONLY because of limited range. Now in 2022 range is no longer a problem. So why Mazda would make a £30,000+ EV that doesn't move the game further forward than Renault's 2012 Kangoo is... just beyond belief or reasoning???
Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. This car has no real niche . I'm staggered Mazda could make such a mistake. You did put ir better than me but you are a professional.
the car is an example of manufacturers building EVs for the sake of it and not to compete against any other car in their line-up. Renault at least tries to make their EVs with longer range and a few key things that set them apart from competition (22kW AC, standard heat pump, charging port at the front). VW does a much better job at their ID. family. But looking at the Mazda I see just a bad value proposition.
This car look good but it has issues like the backdoors, range and use of cork in the cockpit. Mazda should had never realease this car without rotary engine range extender.
This car is heavier than my Seat Mii EV. Is also more expensive, charges at the same speed, and goes a lot less far than my car, with a comparably sized battery. WTF Mazda?
This is a city commuter/grocery getter second vehicle that can be fully charged overnight in a 110V household plug. Suits the needs of many who are not hung up on massive range numbers.
With the traffic these days you need to be prepared (regardless of the type of the car you drive), and perhaps, carry nappies with you, just in case you are prone to "diarrhea alike"😉
I owned this car for 14 months, and drive 10000 miles a year.

looks like a great option for a two car household if you've already got something with longer range
Agree. Good for everyday run arounds

Glad you’ve done real world testing and not regurgitate PR specs. Well done.
The random bong could be the low temperature warning which can change during your driving. Great video, thank you.
the random "bong" !, could be when passing 4 degrees celsuis, all Mazda do this..
A EV with a rex isn't sensible. Just pace your trip differently.
They say it might come in March 2023 now with a wankel.
The random bongs could be the seatbelt warning if you've got a bag on one of the other seats. My workbag would sometimes trigger the warning on my last car.
It could also be a temperature warning.
I think the random bong is change in speed limit from the navi system. We love this car, works great for us.
In addition, I found in Summer the battery running too hot after multiple fast charges.
this was very well made, informative, practical and i appreciate the humour. it was very entertaining. thank you for making the vid
I personally adore the MX-30.
Looking for a smaller city SUV that will be mainly used just around the city, and we usually carry 2 people max, so the MX-30 is high on my list now, and we even decided to skip the CX-30 for this 🙏👍😸
/Additional thoughts/ Imho the MX-30 is better suited as a complimentary car to most families/couples - who already have a larger car with longer range.
Many global car models have this issue, not like say a JDM or US specifically designed model..
Well, with the R-ev coming now we know why there's a gaping hole designed in the middle of the engine compartment ....
I own an mx30 gasoline version and plan to trade it in for an electric once the range extender will be available. I love the G-vectoring and the comfortable and chic interiors.
That annoying bong maybe the sensor that detects your eyes to prevents you from dozing off when driving. So I was told.
This is a rare sight on the uk roads, not been a popular choice for many
Very true, I am driving MX-30 for a while now and yet to meet it on the road!
The rear doors remind me of the RX8 and had no issue with them.
I know what the phantom bong is!!! We have a CX3 and we get the random bong - we've found it is a faulty rear seat passenger sensor - it is bonging because it thinks there is a passenger in a seat without a seatbelt on!
It's a nice car. The CCS just needs to be high for this battery to be practical. 35kWh ain't bad when CCS matches. See classic Ioniq.
The phantom bong, have you checked if it is the 4°C or 0°C warning?
That's certainly one of the bongs - on a hilly road when the temperature is between 4 and 5°C it will constantly do it. But it's also happened in summer. And there is only the one bong for all the warnings so it's confusing!
@@Electrifyingcom Yeah figured with the temp. warning, my Mazda 3 dies that too. But for the summer bong... I have no idea what else it could be
It’ll chime up more if radar cruise control is left on standby.
I am looking/thinking of the mx30
But my trip to work is 34 miles and has a lot of up and down hills. (The down hill tends to charge my auris battery xD)
I only travel futher once awhile down south or up north (once year ) but an MG and Nissan leaf is in the same price range..the kit and looks of the mx are better though
This is the 2nd reviewer I've seen mentioning the space under the hood, neither of which even considered that the range extender motor might go there.
no the space is for illegal imigrants, you can fit 2 or 3 of them there
Random bong is temperature fell below 4°C which is a warning for black ice.
That coat is on point Tom, want
Speed recognition system and it's likely set for 0mph or 5mph over that speed. My wife hates it. Never a problem with me as I use cruise control. At least thus is my experience on my CX 5
The phantom bong beats me too. It has obviously got something to do with the navigation system. The bongs always occur at the same places in the roads. I found nothing on the several fora I queried.A map update did not remove the bongs, and I doubt whther it has anything to do with thr Road-sign recognition system.
This vest and jacket though!
My Toyota C-HR does random bongs too.
As a certified hippie I'm happy it comes with a bong included.
@@GeordiLaForgery 🤣
@@Musketeer009 😤😂
random bongs in my Auris are down to speed cameras and known speed traps transmitted through the satnav ... its the speedtrap bong when there is nowt there which is amusing
What does well below 100 in winter mean? How many are we talking on average.
Less than 347 miles on the MX-30 R-EV 50 litre tank, some are saying it is even less than that ..not sure how Mazda keep getting the MX-30 so wrong.
You can just stop on any gas station with the rev and fill it up
Question :This or the Mg 4 ?
The e-mini only seats 4 and I will never by a Kia.
What about when you’re in a small car space at Tesco, you open the front door, then the back door, and get the kids out… then you’re all trapped between the doors and the other car next to you, and you can’t escape.
There are family parking spaces at Tesco 😉
we know now that that extra space and limited range was due to the plan to make this a hybrid.
That space in the front is for a rotary range extender. Can't help but feel it's a bit silly.
Love the design but the engine / battery options make it a hard pass. Probably would have sold better if they just offered a regular engine...
"Ginny had half a rowing team in there" ... Me thinking about that fascinating Ada song "and they were Dog**g, they were D**ing"
12 inches 😁 He must have exaggerated to his missus the size of it or he has very large hands 😳
That's 12 inches is it? 🤔 (at 01:08).
Enjoyed the deer (at 04:20) but 'brake' please. 😊 That's a 70 zone!
The problem of the Mazda is the MG ZS EV,thats why i did't buy my fourth Mazda
The MG looks hideous though.
In Australia, this car is more expensive than a model 3 rear wheel drive, packing an lfp battery-capable of 400kms on one charge.
MX30 will be the modern Edsel.
120 miles range on a good day is embarrassing considering how much these cars are sold for.
I love Mazda as a brand but personally will be giving this one a wide berth. The negatives by far outweigh the positives in my opinion.
You know a car is bad when the only good thing is a cork trim.
It has a niche, obviously you do not fall into that category of potential owners. Any car is a subjective matter.
will be perfect with the wankel rex engine
the car is an example of manufacturers building EVs for the sake of it and not to compete against any other car in their line-up.
Renault at least tries to make their EVs with longer range and a few key things that set them apart from competition (22kW AC, standard heat pump, charging port at the front). VW does a much better job at their ID. family. But looking at the Mazda I see just a bad value proposition.
The clam doors suck; much prefer a real 5-door layout.
This car look good but it has issues like the backdoors, range and use of cork in the cockpit. Mazda should had never realease this car without rotary engine range extender.
😆👌
This car is heavier than my Seat Mii EV. Is also more expensive, charges at the same speed, and goes a lot less far than my car, with a comparably sized battery. WTF Mazda?
Long story short, it’s crap for most people…
Nah!
there is no way to justify this car, no way. Mazda should just stick to petrol Skyactives. I just see this as waste of natural resources,
This is a city commuter/grocery getter second vehicle that can be fully charged overnight in a 110V household plug.
Suits the needs of many who are not hung up on massive range numbers.
So why are driving this mazda and having a diarrhea alike? - You never know if you're going to reach home on time...
With the traffic these days you need to be prepared (regardless of the type of the car you drive), and perhaps, carry nappies with you, just in case you are prone to "diarrhea alike"😉
