I definitely enjoyed this format of video. I personally don't mind deep dives into interesting speedrunning lore or methods or history, nor do I personally care how long the video itself is. I think this was a great video, and I think its a very interesting topic that I wish more people would cover.

honestly, you could tell me theres a zelda speedrun where you drink milk for hours and id just be like "yea, zelda speedrunners do that sometimes"
I love being educated on speedrunning by the man that clearly loves the discipline!
So in the original N64 version there was a oversight that could lock you out of 100% and in the 3DS remake they fixed the oversight only to have a new one replace it allowing for “infinite” heart pieces.
So in theory even someone doing a casual play through if someone has the rupees and luck could have all 20 hearts before even meeting Zelda.
subtle but interesting, this being infinitely repeatable means it covers the player if they manage to miss any other heart pieces too
You just know that some kid out there will collect everything and be so confused trying to find the last 3 heart pieces to finish the heart on the menu

@@ARUCARDFTEPES in the n64 at least, it literally gives you extra hearts! And they keep expanding on the second row of hearts, making it uneven with the first row.

Couple of things: at 4:10 , what I thought was happening, is that Grezzo moved the flag to "when the heart piece is dug up" to "when the heart piece is collected", and I thought that meant that if you collect the heart piece, everything works fine, but if you keep digging without collecting the heart piece, you're able to dig up more heart pieces...slightly disappointed with what ended up being their solution XD
And also, are you really telling me the meme speedrun category collects 68 heart pieces ??? WHY NOT ONE MORE?

i actually discovered this on my own, i got over max hearts, the extra hearts began forming a weird b button on the bottom screen with each full heart i got

Alright, now I'm curious...
What would happen if you collected more than 68 heart pieces? Will the game think you have 21+ hearts? Will the UI bug out?
And how far can it go? Will the internal heart piece counter underflow eventually?
You can get more than 20 hearts. As for it underflowing, I have no idea.
I’m not sure about anything past 21, but that 21st heart will show up as a weird pulsing circle near your normal hearts.
@@cryolitegem I believe they show up as other random symbols, at least for the next few heart containers. I think there are symbols for up to 24? I could be wrong on that though, so feel free to fact check me if you like
You do get 21 hearts, and if you get enough the UI will bug out, yeah. I think the UI stays pretty normal for a while, displaying new hearts basically where you'd expect. You can look it up on youtube.
I don't know about the 3DS version specifically, but the original, the bottom row keeps stretching out to the right. (Why check to wrap it down another row etc. when there's only supposed to be two rows anyway, eh?) Eventually the coordinates are so far offscreen that the renderer starts to glitch, and they show up in a more scattered pattern across the screen. Eventually too many objects are drawn and the display freezes (but the game engine still works). Eventually even that breaks, resulting in a hard freeze.
(This is true both in-game and on the title screen!)
The counter is 16 bit signed, I think? So it wraps around at 32767.
(There are other glitches to duplicate heart pieces in N64, so no Dampe grinding required, even if it worked.)

I wonder if this was just _really_ low on Grezzo's priorities, and that's why this bug slipped through, but I'm starting to think the good folks at Grezzo just weren't as competent as Nintendo thought they would be.
If I had to guess, it was probably either an issue with the initial coding...or it got temporarily fixed and forgotten about. The remake was made *really* fast, after all.
An issue could be...anything. Maybe the flag was acting unusually, maybe applying it to the 3DS didn't work quite right, maybe they weren't even aware of the bug and just deleted what appeared to be an extraneous flag on the digging up. Maybe they just missed this part.
I dunno, we weren't there.
For a second, I thought you meant Grezzo as in the game Grezzo Due.
If they were hotpatching the ROM, it could be easier to remove the check than actually move it to a different spot. But since they actually ported it, you'd think they could have moved the logic.
I wonder if maybe it was intentional. Maybe they wanted to make it where you could get an extra piece of heart, in case you were unable to get it any other way.
Tbh, it is the better of the two evils by far. I just wonder why in the world they didn't make a patch for the issue for international copies later, with it only being fixed in the Chinese version that also gets rid of several other glitches.

what happened with the dig up guarantee? does it reset when he digs the heart piece? wouldn't it keep digging heart pieces if you just don't collect the rupees?
Sadly not, here is a quick breakdown of the system:
8 Green Rupees
4 Blue Rupees
2 Red Rupees
1 HP
So for example:
You get 8 Green Rupees, the game tries to give you a 9th one, it will instead give you a Blue Rupee because its the worst rupee available.
However, If you straight away got 2 Red Rupees and never got any blue or green rupees, and the game tries to give you a 3rd red rupee, it will go to the worst available category left, meaning you get a green rupee.
Once you have obtained every single rupee and the heart piece, the next dig will sadly be a green rupee and then reset the cycle all over again.
So it's both a terrible way to farm rupee's, and heart pieces.
Bit confusing but I hope that clears it up.

Small question, where do the speed runners get the money to pay him? Your clips show the players having several hundred rupees, but at the start of a new run, they wouldn't have anything close to that

You collect 5 rupees from moving the grave next to the one you use to reload the area and then collecting the rupees Dampe digs up gives you 5.9 on average for a net positive of 0.9 rupees per dig. Of course sometimes the RNG still screws you over but then it's just a case of skipping a cycle to get the grave rupee twice.
@@slitfidgetspinnerdabbodmod9953 Makes sense. I guess the footage where they have more than 99 rupees is not from one of those run tho? Because they never collect the Adult's Wallet.
@@ChubbyTibo Any N64 footage (or possibly PC port from the looks of it) isn't part of a run since the issue only exists in the 3DS version. I believe some people considered getting adult's wallet to reduce the chance of running out of rupees to nearly 0 at some point, but most don't bother.

Just as a general question how do the runners get the money to cover Dampe's 10r fee per dig?
The grave next to the one they fall into has a blue rupee under it (and they need to wait for dampe to move a few steps after coming out so there’s time to grab it). Then, the expected value from playing the game is actually 5.9 (0.4 * 1 + 0.3 * 5 + 0.2 * 20 + 0.1 * 0, where the last term represents the heart piece since you don’t get any rupees when you get a heart) - so, over many many plays, you’ll get ~6 rupees back from each play on average. That combined with the 5 from the grave is enough to keep going basically indefinitely (on average you get nearly 11 rupees back for each 10 rupee attempt), so unless you get very very unlucky with green rupees you won’t need to go replenish.

By my calculations, the expected monetary winning for each dig is 5.9 rupees (with a heart piece being worth 0 rupees). Given that you need to pay 10rp to enter, that means that on average you will lose 4.1rp per dig. This means an average version of this run (with 700 digs) would require a total of 2,870 rupees.
I'm curious how this is managed? I think we saw footage in this video of Link having over 700rp. Did they use some glitch to get a bigger wallet, are wallets not a thing in the DS version? Is there some glitch that's used to get rupees? Or do they just go cut grass or something every once in a while to farm rupees?
wallets are a thing in the 3ds version. Keep in mind that that was a demonstration, so whoever was recording could have just used a mod or have collected the wallets normally (n64 doesn't show an icon to show that you have the wallets)
also the recording of 700 rp was in the n64 version.
They get a Rupee in the grave next to the exit grave, which is 5 rupees. So that would bring their average rupees to 10.9 rupees an attempt. You can see them opening the second grave in the video.

I have a few questions about this:
-Whats stopping you from talking to Dampe over and over again on the same dirt patch like in the video?
-If it only takes 15 tries to get a heart piece without resetting the area wouldn't it be faster to go for the guaranteed chances rather than resetting the area every time?
-Where do they get the money for all those attempts?
A 10% chance is better on average than a guaranteed 1 in 15 tries.
Statistically sure but it's a gamble, a 99% chance can still come up short.
@@Trans4Hire in a well established speedrunning category, the slow but reliable methods aren't good enough to be competitive. It's a choice between the high risk/high reward resetting strat, or find an entirely new strat that is consistently faster

I'd like to add that "just moving the trigger" wouldn't have worked either, since you could just continue digging without picking it up. You'd need two triggers: One for "it is lying on the map" and one for "the player has picked it up". only if both are false, should the piece be spawnable.

I uploaded a terrible quality video, pointing a webcam at my 3DS of this glitch on Jun 22, 2011, Less than a week after the game came out on 3DS. Kinda forgot it existed until watching this video. I wonder if there is an earlier documented discovery of this than mine. Would be cool to think I discovered something, but I doubt it.
