    From brazil here. A couple of years ago I had the same issue (annoying loud continuous beep ). My UPS unit is an older model (like waaaaay older, over 10 years old) and does not have an error display. I opened it up, removed the battery and, after testing it, could assert that the battery was dead. Then I just bought a new 12volts battery. The new battery was too big to fit back into the UPS casing so I did some macgyver wiring to keep the battery outside the UPS unit. It worked like a charm and is doing just fine for like 15 years.

    This gonna sound funny: I (also) place UPS professionally.
    We replace the UPS every 4 years.
    The process:
    We calculate how much battery capacity is needed and multiply it by 1.25. (of course don’t forget the maximum output)
    After 4 years the battery pack in a quality UPS (like APC) will need to be replaced because they will lose around 25% of their capacity. To be on the save side, because we use them on critical systems, we completely replace the UPS. But dealing with non-critical systems I would recommend replacing the battery packs after 4 years and the whole unit after 8 years.

    Don't expect UPS batteries to survive for years. 4 years is quite a decent age. Find any UPS with 3 or more Amperes of charging current (second-hand rack mounted APC Smart UPS will be a win, just change its fans to something silent) and the output power you need, hook up to it some huge external Pb or Li-FePO4 batteries and be happy. I'm using 1 kW 15 years old APC with external Li-FePO4 batteries (total capacity 1.28 kW*h) it was never even theoretically supposed to be used with, and it's OK. Just don't expect the batteries to live forever.

    Here in Austria (Europe) I just looked up an official statistics: the total time of unscheduled power outages in 2023 was 33 minutes (that's a relatively high number due to some hail storms, and a few extraordinary weather phenomena). The last time I experienced outages exceeding a few hours (and got a UPS for our office) was in the late 80s in India. The telex and fax machine were also hooked up to that (big!) UPS. You can never have too many UPS systems! Even though I use laptops almost exclusively, my network routers and switches are all plugged into UPSs so my entire home office stays up during power blips or outages. At least long enough for my generator to kick on. They also smooth out that nasty power a generator feeds into your panel. I've even got my main television plugged into a UPS. I spend a lot of money on batteries every couple of years, though.

    F03 is a known issue with those, I had a few here that did that as well. The internal charger faults, and the battery slowly drains till the relay cant stay latched and it cuts off. You can trickle charge with 24v dc externally (12 to each battery) to get it back up. This "fix" held for a while but I ended up replacing them all.

    I was required to look into the battery storage part of solar. The Powerwall 3 and EP Cube have a product that when you put your whole home through the battery you essentially now have a whole home UPS or sub panel dedicated to circuits through an inverter. They have very safe LFP batteries now with over 6000 cycles. I believe these battery/inverters will be more accessible and come down in cost in the next 10 years. This will help to offset peak demand which will lower power bills whether you use solar of just use grid and batteries. You can back feed your electric car to your home or charge and keep your house power going too. The throughput is getting much better starting in the 13kVA range.

They have a finite number and severity of power events they can protect against and that’s it. You know, I’m not sure why you need a UPS for your current AI machine. You will probably be using it mostly for inference, not training. You really don’t need a UPS except for servers, NAS or long running devices like for AI training. If your power goes out you probably wont be able to keep doing what you were doing (no lights). If you really want to be able to keep working, you need a power system for your house. Surge protectors protect your equipment and the biggest problem from power outages are spinning disks, which are probably only in your NAS.

      Anything with an internal (ATX) power supply benefits from being fed from a UPS. Brownouts or voltage spikes have taken out 3 PSUs and one motherboard over the years in my home, and surge protectors I’ve used didn’t seem to actually work. If the power goes down it generally spikes when it comes back, and that has damaged my kit before I got UPS protection. I can only run for 20 mins on battery, but it’s enough time to send alerts, do small electrical jobs, or work through short outages.

    There's a Bigger Problem with UPS Like you bought, If I'm not wrong you went with Line Interactive UPS, That Has Stimulated Sign Wave Output aka Tapped Waves, QUASI Sine Wave. It would work Mostly Fine with Equipments that Doesn't Support Active Power Factor Correction (A PFC). But with APFC, These tend damage the Equipment Over Time, For Example Most Power Supplies Over 750 to 1000w Does Comes with Active Power Factor Correction. This could Cause Damage to PC'S that Uses These Power Supplies Over Time. During the Initial Usage Stage When it comes Power Supply Especially We would constantly Hear Hissing Noise in the Power Supplies that Increases Over Time and also has Potential to Permanently Damage the System as well. Therefore Using Pure Sine Wave Output UPS like Double Conversation Online UPS is Recommended.

      The point of a UPS is to give enough time for a graceful shutdown and to absorb short power fluctuations (which he said he gets sometimes).
      I've been through enough "short power fluctuations" to justify getting multiple UPS units, each with its own purpose. 1000va/850w for the PC, a pair of 1000va/650w for the monitors + storage pc, and a 650va/?w one for the ISP modem+router. At the very least, I don't have to worry about a half-second power outage/spike causing my windows install to bork itself, necessitating a multi-hour chkdsk (at best) or reinstall (at worst), or worse, file corruption.
      The battery situation sucks, but would rather the UPS battery getting replaced every few years, than for power-damaged hardware getting tossed out.

    • @menschentoaster
      @menschentoaster 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Skyline_NTR I know what a UPS is for. But I highly doubt he would require one for his workload since he primarily uses laptops as he said. Its a nice to have and I don't know how often outages/fluctuations occur for him but I don't think its necessary at all in his case.
      Besides, maybe the 5-6 Power Outages that I get per year are not enough to kill my PC, but I never ever got my Windows to break, chkdsk or anything like that because of a power outage. I wouldn't want to run windows update or a bios update when power runs out but other then that you *should* be fine.
      But thats very dependant on Workloads I guess. I'm not saying a UPS is unnecessary for everyone. I just don't think he would have so many power issues to justify it. Hence the comment. If I'd get a UPS personally, I'd only do that for my router since I can always continue work on my laptop (since I have my Code on remote git servers or Documents in OneDrive) and I don't have mobile reception at all were I live. In every case where I would have wished to own one (which is like twice a year) I quickly realize that it would be more money, worries about safety and condition of the thing than its worth. In Datacenters thats a different story but for regular consumers I really don't see the point except in some places with a really unstable power grid.
      But I live on the countryside in Austria. We have pretty good infrastructure in Austria, but where I live the powergrid is less stable then it might be in more populated areas. But there is still no need for a UPS other then "just in case". And that specific case might as well never happen.
      Its like when everybody here got power generators because of the possiblity of a giant blackout ... except that still hasnt happened and it has been a while since buying these was the trend here. I have the same one. Had it for about 8 years? It caught fire.
    IMPORTANT: I want to share something because I made the same mistake when purchasing a UPS. It's not enough to ensure the UPS provides enough power; you also need to verify that your wall outlet and circuit can handle it. Multiple outlets don’t necessarily mean more power, as they may all be connected to the same circuit on your breaker panel.
    In North America, a standard 15-amp circuit typically provides up to 1800 watts, but it's recommended to use only 80% of that capacity, which is around 1440 watts for continuous loads. So, even if you have several outlets in a room (like my living room, which has 5), they could all be on the same circuit, sharing the same 1440W limit. The outlets are there to give you options for plugging in devices, but they don’t increase the total power available.
    To figure out which outlets are on the same circuit, go to your breaker panel, turn off each circuit individually, and check which outlets lose power. That way, you’ll know how much total power is available in your room. You may find that you need to split devices across different circuits in the room.
    If you need to run a power cable across the room, ensure the cable’s gauge is thick enough to prevent voltage drop. A 14 AWG cable can handle 15 amps for shorter runs (typically under 50 feet). For longer runs, consider using 12 AWG or even 10 AWG for better safety and performance.

    Alex, I have the same UPS that you didn’t replace the batteries in it. There are 2 batteries and it took about 15m and $30. 😂 UPS hardware is very reliable and rarely “dies” 90-98% of the time it’s the batteries…. As for AI and power, the data center power requirements are massive and so are the cooling issues, which means chip level inefficiencies. Yeah, you can download a document from Nvidia about their latest data center design/configuration requirements (I did for a consulting job) and nobody talks about the power consumption, but they should. It is the typical life cycle of electronics… 1st make it work, 2nd reduce is cost, 3rd streamline the power consumption. Remember how much heat your Pentium 2 based PC generated… well, maybe you’re too young to remember that… 😂

    What a throwaway society we're in - just replace the batteries for $30! Buy bulk ones, not the overpriced from the UPS manufacturer! Lead acid batteries are around since 1859 and well understood - SLA/gel ones just dry up after some years on standby.
    Got many APC UPSes running 15 years+ like a charm.. And that "support" from a callcenter in India - omg!

    • @TylerStartz
      @TylerStartz 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I second this! I've got several nice APC units from work that were going to be recycled, that just needed $30 worth of batteries!

      That particular CyberPower model series has a shorting issue caused by PC board glue turning conductive over 5 years or so...referred to as the "Yellow Glue of Death" problem. Can be fixed but disassembly & new circuit board components soldering required.
