The problem is that they were victims of their own greed. Investing is a very bullish business. That's how we lost half our homes in America during 2008-2009 by aggressively trading and using their homes as collateral. The banks were bailed out and homeowners lost their shirts.

I'd argue that they were victims of someone else's greed, not their own. Pre-GFC investors were sold products whose risk was misrepresented (or were non-existent in Versalko's case), and sub-prime borrowers were set up to fail. All of this was done by greedy bankers.

Versalko got off very easy IMO. Our own con artist, Melissa Caddick, disappeared leaving nothing but a decomposing foot in a running shoe. The coroner pronounced her dead but was unable to speculate on how she died. Police are also unable to determine how she seems to have evaded CCTV footage despite leaving home on foot in a heavily populated suburb in Sydney. The jig was up - the feds had raided her home - but If it was suicide, it was a doozy. Jumping from the cliffs is hardly novel, but relying on a shark to neatly sever a foot while devouring the rest of the body is sheer criminal genius ;)
