    Hattie McDaniel had a famous rebuttal when someone didn’t like her portrayals as a maid: “I rather play a maid then be one” Many actors of color owe a great debt to Hattie.

      albert penuelaz They made a monument in this grave for her but are her remains there as well? Did they move it? I probably missed it in the video but I didn’t hear him say anything about her remains being moved.

      Narcissism when the new owners came into the picture in the 90s they wanted to reinterred Hattie at Hollywood forever but her decline the offer because they didn’t want to disturb her final resting place. That’s why the cenotaph is there so at least there was justice for Hattie. It’s said to be a popular attraction.

    For the 11 years I lived in Hollywood this was always my favorite hangout. It's the closest anyone could get to being close to Hollywood royalty. Though they have gone, leaving behind only a corpse in a casket and a headstone, I could always buy a pizza from the Little Caesar's at the strip mall in front of the graveyard and dine with Hollywood's finest!

    I lived in Hollywood for 7 years in the 90s. One of my favorite places was the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I used to bring friends from out of town there. I miss Hollywood so much, and watching this brought back a memory of one of my favorite places, especially the Lake. I was so happy you showed the DeMille grave-it was the reason I went to the cemetery the first time. I had just read Agnes DeMille's (Cecil's niece) biography Dance to the Piper, and her descriptions of Hollywood and working with her uncle was wonderfully descriptive. There was also a book written by Rober Parrish called Growing up in Hollywood that talks about the cemetery and about watching a funeral from the mast of a ship (part of a set on the Paramount lot). Both books gave me the impetus to visit the cemetery. Even though the neglect was pretty apparent, I still loved it.

    Another masterpiece Mr Dark. Thank you for featuring Anton Yelchin who played Chekhov in the recent Star Trek movies. The original Chekhov was played by Walter Koenig whose son Andrew Koenig is also resting in this cemetery. Andrew may be best remember for playing Boner on the sitcom Growing Pains. Andrew was a nice boy who suffered from depression. In 2010 he went missing in Vancouver. Several of his Hollywood friends including Sarah Silverman sent out a search party in Stanley Park where he was found hanging from a tree.

    This video is a feast for the senses and mind. Visually rich and richly diverse. Arthur Dark's genius comes from being imaginative, curious and willfully observant. It is the product of his own will and effort, which makes his example more inspiring and also more possible to emulate. Most of us might not ever be able to match Mr. Dark's talents, but we can try to cultivate in ourselves the skills that he uses to put imagination to productive use. All of us have something to learn from him about how to lead a more creative and intellectually satisfying life.

    I was surprised and really saddened at how plain Chris Cornell’s marker/site is.....Chris deserves something much grander, like Johnny Ramones, which was really beautifully done..Johnny’s wife did a wonderful job memorializing Johnny....I know there is a statue of Chris in Seattle, that the city erected (is that correct?)...and that’s fine....but, it’s not the same if it’s not where his remains are...that is if his remains are indeed in this cemetery.

      Yeah there’s a statue at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle (which was vandalized last year...) but I was hoping they’d do something similar at his grave. Especially since he’s right next to Johnny Ramone. I visited from Australia last year. When I was there, there were red & white flowers arranged in the shape of a cross on his grave.

    I was always happy that the guys who bought the cemetery saved it and love it like we all do! They where one of the first places that gave families the option of having a funeral service over the internet. They aimed at getting families together who has came to the USA and those in their home country. The money from this type of service helped save the cemetery as a whole. Bless them ❤️🙌

    I grew up with a neighbor who played the original Vampira/Elvira/Lily Munster style of character. Carroll Borland. She played in a movie starring Bela Lugosi, “Mark of the Vampire”. During a time when Vampira and Elvira were involved in litigation regarding their characters, Carroll joked, “Imagine that! Vampira and Elvira are suing each other over MY face!”

    I had the great pleasure to meet and spend a little time with Fay Wray in 1987 at the Canadian Consulate in L.A. She was with her husband and could not have been more charming and wonderful. I asked her if it would be appropriate later that evening to go and visit the grave of Marilyn Monroe just down the street. She laughed and turned to her husband and said, we should go as well and I can scream. One of the highlights of my life. RIP.

    It's amazing how people like to "put down "southerners for racism,but as you said about Hattie Mcdaniel not being buried at Hollywood Forever because she was black. It shows that racism was EVERYWHERE -NOT JUST THE SOUTH.

    • @tracyroweauthor
      @tracyroweauthor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @First Amendment besides this not being the place for political bs, the only democrats that were racists were the southern democrats, aka the Dixiecrats. They later became Republicans in the 1960s, and the current GOP is the party of racism. THAT can't be disputed.

      Racism and segregation was actually more prevalent in the North, than in the South. It's just that you hear more about it in the South.

    I remember when this place was in such disrepair it was so sad to see inside the dome/
    Rotunda windows broken, water leaking, dead leave from the dead tree in the middle. Sounds creepy cool but it wasn’t because the urns interned there were fairing worse than the building but, when it was under new management they really fixed it up fast and respectfully.
