Tamaragua / La Capellania Corralejo - What is it like?

  • Tamaragua (or La Capellania as it is now known) is a large urbanisation of around 2000 houses situated about 3 miles from the centre of Corralejo. It is quite a popular place to live for both expats and locals. I have a number of friends that live or have lived there who liked it.
    Many people have passed it on the way to Corralejo on the new road which goes right by it. Tamaragua even has its own junction from the new road.
    It is on the No 8 bus route from Corralejo to El Cotillo.
    There is a large shopping area but sadly most units have never been occupied and many of those that were have gone out of business. This does rather let Tamaragua down as the rest is quite nice. There was even a small cinema which has been closed for many years. The Superdino supermarket remains open along with two small cafes/bars ... and I discovered, a pool supplies company (M&M Piscinas).

    We stay in this area for our winter holiday each year (missed it in 2021 of course). You're right the villas are very nice and look better inside than out. It is a little out of the way but then Corralejo is very close, we love going for a coffee in La Jares, it's a bit bohemian and less touristy. Been visiting the island for 15 years now and never tire of it, something always pulls us back. Thanks for this video, for a few moments I felt like I was there.

    We stayed there at the start of the lockdown last year in a AirBnB. We arrived on the island the day before lockdown was announced. The Superdino was a life saver when our flight home got cancelled and the car rental company demanded we return the car to the airport. Ended up staying for 3 weeks instead of 10 days due to a certain airline having no flights or care. Ended up getting home via Lanzarote. It is such a shame the shops are empty/derelict could have been a lovely place. The Villa we stayed in was 1st class and had a hot tub. Always enjoy your videos JP have been enjoying Fuerteventura through your lens during lockdown. Hope to be back later this year

    I've driven past many times but never gone inside. The last time (just before the pandemic) I noticed from the main road that the windows had been smashed in the shops beside the main entrance. Very sad, and an immediate alarm bell to anyone condsidering buying there. "A Place in the Sun" took several prospective buyers there over the past few years, but as far as I can recall, none of them actually committed to buying. It's clear why!! It looks like one of the so called 'New Towns' we have here in Scotland .... designed by folk who never actually went on to live there. No matter where you are in the World, it's all about .... "Location, Location, Location" .... and this 'new town' outside the wonderful vibrant Corralejo simply doesn't cut it. Really appreciate you showing us round JP .... it's exactly what I thought it would look like when I drove past on the main road. Very sad, because (as the developers gambled) it should have been a great success being so close to Corralejo. Thanks for taking the time to show us

    Another good video JP - my wife and I have walked to La Cap cross-country from El Cotillo and been through it on the bus many times. A rather sad place really with all the dereliction - not even a cycle track or walkway into Corralejo, although an interesting walk through the underpass along tracks towards the dunes and onward to the east coast and around into Corralejo. That in itself might be an interesting one to film if you're feeling fit one day!!

    We have lived here in La Capellania for nearly 2 years and your video doesn’t show a true picture of life here, in what is a wonderful multinational community , life here is very peaceful . Yes the shops failed and are an eyesore but there has been a lot of recent investment from the council in the area and more investment is planned . The residents of Pueblo Canario installed the gates and cctv last year to deter squatters and all got together in a show of solidarity to remove squatters from a residents property

      That's very nice to hear, in fact might be a nice and secluded place. To each their own, I actually preferred the times where there were no people around on the streets during lockdown. People are horrible, I like to be as far away from them as possible.

    Hi JP,
    The gated entrances to Pueblo Canario are relatively new, not there when we used to stay on there. Such a shame it's been let go, the shopping area looks like a drug dealers paradise....
    There is / was a small swimming pool on Tamaragua near Calle Sabina. Pool shop is recent also.. Casa Pablo sold/ sells internet passes for the urbanisation. Shooters went bust, the last year we stayed there around 2017.
    Keep safe... Still hoping to be able to get out this year.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there were certainly no gates the last time I went here. Drug dealers would be run out by the police - they hate anyone muscling in on their dealing territories! 😉

    There's an awful lot you don't know about Tamaragua. It might have been a good idea to find out about the place before you videod it and gave a completely wrong impression. It's a great place to live. The people are great, everyone is friendly. Pablo's is like the community hub with Trini and Emilio at the helm. And the Italian next door is good as well. I've always found it completely safe to walk around at any time. And it's not in Lajares, our postcode is Corralejo

    • @stratman7810
      @stratman7810 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. Have things improved since the several Gaurdia Civil and the National Police Inspector have stopped running their gang of burglars who were breaking into properties in the area and Lajares? I always presumed the actions of these police officers were why the gated community was conceived. Perhaps, because these bent policemen, who also ran the drugs distribution in Fuerteventura, are now mostly in prison then things have improved.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I stated in the video when I was driving around that the villas are nice. I also stated in the description that the commercial area lets the area down as the rest is quite nice. I also say I know people that live there and like it. I have responded to the comments of people who said they wouldn't want to walk around at night that it is fine in the housing areas. In addition, I stated that the coffee I had in Pablos was very good and cheap. Surely you think that the commercial area lets the rest down, particularly as that is what you see from the road - or perhaps you like it looking like something out of a dystopian future film.

  • @moviebod
    @moviebod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoyed the video John. It seems that shopping centre has a long way to go to pull itself up, It doesn't necessarily make much difference changing the name, as it obviously got its reputation from a persistent problem. Fingers crossed eh? Why is Pueblo Canario gated do you think?

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect that they had plans to make the whole place larger so that there would be enough custom for the shops etc but due to the crash that didn't happen. Now the abandoned shops really bring the area down, which is a shame as the rest is ok. I'm not sure why they have put the gates in unless it is to stop squatters getting in to some of the holiday homes. They certainly weren't there a while back as our gestor lives in one and I used to drive straight in. Thanks for watching.

    The wife and I have stayed there in two villas. The first off Calla Drago which was a detached 2 bed villa with hot tub, the second was in from Calla Sabina. It was a 1 bed semi detached house right at the edge of the estate looking out to the volcanos. That was over the last ten years, and sadly you cant rent them anymore. The second villa the family sold up and bought a place in Lanzarote .......Traitors!!!!!! We always hired a car because we would go down to Jandia for the second week. You dont need a car because the buses are good and you can get a taxi at night.

    Staying here right now and the villa we’re in is very nice. But the whole subdivision has a ghost town feel to it and it’s very isolated from the rest of civilization. Thank goodness we have a rental car and can get out of here otherwise to find yourself here with no transportation would be very frustrating. Obviously something went badly wrong with the high hopes for this community- maybe the pandemic? The shops are derelict and covered in graffiti. Not great tourist appeal. Wouldn’t ever dream of coming back 🙁

    Stayed there the year of the Icelandic volcano. Lovely villa. Just a bit dead and soulless. Slightly too far from corralejo for me.

      It is definitely a bit of a way outside Corralejo so you really need to drive (so no drinking) or get the bus there and a taxi back if going for a meal or whatever. Thanks for watching Chris.

      @@JPinFuerteventura what's the general local perception of the area because property is good value for money there?

      @@chrisstephens6194 People are generally very happy there I think. Some who don't live there may sneer as it is a "housing estate" but 2000 families can't be wrong I guess.
