    She's not human...she is a diety currently in human form, our Amazon Warrior Queen :). And yes, Mr. Holopainen is a friggin' genius for composing so many musical masterpieces like this one.

    This song was composed by Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboard guy) at a very hard time of his life. According to his words he "committed suicide" in the song because he could not do it in real life. For me it is one of the best songs of the group. The inspiration is capricious ;)

      Yeah, Tuomas said he would never kill himself in real life but doing it in a song was very therapeutic. :)

    To understand the whole meaning of this song, you have to dive into the history of the band since all the songs are written by Tuomas and he reveals his thoughts and feelings in his lyrics.
    This song was written shortly after Nightwish separated from their first singer Tarja in 2005, who Tuomas was friends with for many years but he felt betrayed by her and her husband (this would be too much to explain in detail) and couldn't work with her anylonger. In interviews with Tuomas and documentations about him, it becomes clear that after this seperation, Tuomas had a deep depression because he lost Tarja, who meant so much to him and he didn't know about the future of his band and you can feel his desperation in this song. He also explained that in this song, he killed himself (in the lyrics) instead of commiting suicide in real life.
    If you are interested in more interpretations of the lyrics, have a look here: songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858678581/

      When Tuomas had written the song, he actually didn't want to release it at all at first, just keep it to himself, but after many thoughts he did release it, it did mean so much to him.

      Also, the fans blamed him for firering Tarja. And that was very hard for him, because it was the band who did that, not just him. But i took the blame.

    You know i have been watching your Nightwish videos for a while now but i keep coming back to this. Firstly its a nice reaction vid but what got me was to see you all blushing and flustered when you saw her costume. Hahaha. It was funny and adorable at the same time but even the opposite sex feels that way when they see her singing like this! :) keep on the good work mate.

    I hope we all have someone who looks at us the way Piglet looks at Floor 😍

  • @nimedhel09
    @nimedhel09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Nah, at the beginning it's not Floor, but a little boy, I think. I agree, sometimes she doesn't seem human at all, lol.
    The song was originally sung by Anette Olzon, the second singer of Nightwish (a controversial home too), but Floor definitely brings more emotion to the song. You did songs from all 3 singers, but with Floor singing, haha!
    Ok, for the little story about the song, 2005 is the year Tarja, the first singer, was fired from the band, just after their last concert, End of an Era. It was handled poorly by the guys, and Tuomas, as the founder and leader of the band, was under fire because of it (plus there's this popular theory that he was in love with Tarja, but I won't go into that, because it was never confirmed by any party), so I think, with this song, he talked about that period in his life. I've not really analyzed this song, so I'm sure other amazing people will have a great insight into what's going on in this one.
    BTW, Tuomas writes like 95% of Nightwish stuff, so that includes lyrics and music. Floor hasn't written anything for the band yet. I think she has decided to take a backseat and just enjoy singing for the moment (she wrote all the stuff for ReVamp and lyrics for After Forever for years and years).
    I think you should react to Phantom of the Opera from End of and Era (my all-time favourite version of this song), and Yours is an Empty Hope (Floor growls during the chorus, I freaking love it).

    • @ProgPiglet
      @ProgPiglet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      hell informative comment, love it, cheers m/ m/ i'm doing that version of phantom of the opera next eZ booooiz altho floor doing growls sounds like fun hahahah

    • @nimedhel09
      @nimedhel09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You're welcome! And great! Yeah, Floor doing growsl is cool as heck. She also growls in many songs from her project ReVamp. I think one performance from them that stands out is Disdain at Graspop 2010. Normally, there are male growls in the song, but Floor did it all and it was freaking epic!

    • @harleyquinn8011
      @harleyquinn8011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, I'm not so sure about that rumor either that Tuomas was in love with Tarja, because there was big issues at the time in the band and the biggest were Tarja's new boyfriend/manager, Marcelo Kabuli who really messed up the relations between Tarja and rest of the band. They were just too demanding on their on-going tour: they wanted to fly from state to state and town to town instead of travelling with a band bus, "Nightliner", with the boys. They also demanded much more less gigs in the future and more free time, but also a bigger pay-offs and they wanted to live in luxury hotels and so on... That's why the song "Master Passion Greed" was wrote to Tarja's husband, Marcelo. Tarja also notified the band in the middle of tour that she will not continue in the band after the next album and minimized tour. All those tight demands and Tarja's notice to leave the band made the rest of the band very frustrated and angry because they were just started their purposeful way into the international breakthrough.
      The narrator (the whispering boy) in this song is British-Finnish theater- and TV-director's, Neil Hardwick's son, Sam Hardwick, if I remember right.

      Hi ProgPiglet! Love your reaction channel. ... To add a little bit to the informative description given above, do young people (I'm an old geezer BTW) still have to read Edgar Allan Poe in English Lit class in high school? Don't know. But if you are familiar with that author, this song alludes to Poe's "The Pit & the Pendulum" as a dark metaphor for a Gothic romantic tragedy with himself cast as the main character. The spoken-word verse about being "raped again and again" refers metaphorically to himself being "raped" by the repeated passage of Poe's pendulum blade across his abdomen slowly cutting him in two ("Second robber to the right of Christ! Cut in half; infanticide!") It isn't about a suicide but about dying inside, romantically, at the hand of the never-to-be lover who rejected his love. To understand these lyrics, one has to understand Nightwish in total, as a big picture. Virtually every lyric Tuomas has ever written, from day one up to and including Imaginarium (EFMB was the first break to a new theme) has been about being the "escapist," the "lost one," the introvert unable to say directly to his wished for lover what he felt. And so he wrote lyrics that were really supposed to be him speaking to her but were cast in the female voice as her speaking to him or to the world in hopes, I suppose, that she would understand the message ("Sing what you can't say; Forget what you can't play" from "Dead Boy's Poem") ("Did you ever hear what I told you? Did you ever read what I wrote you? Did you ever listen to what we played? Did you ever let in what the world said?" from "Bye, Bye Beautiful"). Even the band's name from its very inception reflects this overarching theme. After Tarja left "in the Year of Our Lord 2005," Annette Olzen continued the theme by singing lyrics that reflected the aftermath of the romantic death in "Dark Passion Play." In one respect, his act of firing Tarja unexpectedly from the band might also be viewed as a suicide of sorts, and the P&P lyrics could well have a double meaning (a poetic device he has used often) indicating both a suicide when viewed in one context and death at the hand of the lover when viewed in another context. Now I will expect to hear all kinds of dissing about "oh it's just a rumor, blah, blah, blah." Bull$#!+. Anyone who thinks it is just a rumor has not been paying attention long enough, has not been digesting and integrating all the lyrics in a bigger picture nor integrating them with both Marcello's "open letter" to the band and with numerous interviews over the years. Of course none of the parties can admit such personal details in public. I am sure lawyers for both sides make sure it all remains, officially speaking, just a fascinating, trans-global stage play---a Dark Passion Play, if you will. But when reality comes crashing into the lyrics of the stage play with uncanny accuracy, one can't hide from the obvious. And that's not a bad thing. It is what makes Nightwish such a beautifully charming and stunningly successful band. One can become "attached" to the personal stories of the band members past and present in a very heart-touching way that endears them and their work unlike any other band can muster. Peace!

      Chris dude! Thank you so much, just cheers man, i really really appreciate the info, I completely forgot about the Edgar Allen Poe reference. He isn't really touched on at all in australian high schools, mind you I remember reciting The Raven in front of my english class way back when hahahah otherwise his work always came across as pretty morbid and didn't really resonate with me, so never read The Pit And The Pendulum. Dying inside romantically from unrequited love makes a lot of sense given all those circumstances... thank you again! m/ m/ m/ m/ m/

    The heart beat represents Tuomas finally dying (hear how it progressively stops beating) and after that you have “Mother and Father” which would be Tuomas’ parents receiving him in heaven.
    I always felt that final part was Tuomas’ farewell to Tarja.
    So moving.

    I truly enjoy your honest and giddy reactions. Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish! Now, as for the breakdown behind this song: The keyboardist of the band is also the band's leader and primary composer. His name is Tuomas Holopainen and he is a rock composing genius.
    This song the Poet and The Pendulum is his cathartic discharging of all the shit the band went through when they fired their original singer Tarja Turunen. The media lashed out and made him feel horrible amongst other things. (Tuomas breaks down the song himself in many different interviews). The song is a poetic form of him killing himself so that he didn't feel the need to have to do it in real life during that dark time. He has since admitted that although this song HAD to be written, that dark time has long past but it brings back such dark memories when they play it live that he has the sound tech turn off the vocal lyrics in his ear pieces.
    It's a dark song but a beautiful one as well. Glad you enjoyed it!

    I think you should know in my opinion that you cannot classify Nightwish.It has been around for over 20 yrs. And in that time has grown with the people in the band. Tuomas writes the music that he wants and does not care about popularity. All of his songs are his way of expressing his emotions or just telling a story. This is what makes Nightwish unique to me.
    Everybody below gave you the basic story of the song. When you mentioned about the keyboardist expressing emotions it is because this song he wrote(as well as 95% of Nightwish's music and lyrics)are his emotions when writing the song. In his lyrics he uses a lot of metaphors and older words that are not used anymore but have meaning to the song.(you may have to look up some words, like I do) Hahaha
    I am glad to see that you enjoyed this song.
    Song of Myself at Wacken 2013 is a good one. ;-)

      I'm reading you and I agree completely. I'm latin american, and English is not my mother tongue, but when I read the lyrics of Nightwish I find many unusual words in them. I didn't learn them in english classes ha,ha. Their songs are very emotional, and I think Floor sings them with the right emotion, with passion. Nowadays is so rare to listen to a 10 or 13 minute long song !!, That's great. You know, I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, since I was a boy, and it's very usual a 10 or 20 minute long song, so I enjoy that and appreciate it.

    7:53 - Now I only have 3 minutes and counting
    and 3 minutes later which is on
    10:53 - Save me !
    And they going to part 5 which is Mother and Father “Be still my son , you’re home” means that he’s dead (in this song) and already home (heaven i think)

  • @ollieahokas9179

    The song is deep shit about breaking up and the following depression that leads to a suicide. As the story goes, when Tarja, the first vocalist left the band the keyboard player who writes almost every piece of theirsongs, got deeply depressed and suicial and to get back on the track, he wrote the song about the suicide he never commited. You can see this visualized by sort of cutting his head off before the slow end. The slow end is a story where his mom and dad brings him to the afterworld. The song is very emotional to the band as well as at the very end the guitarist and the bass player gather around the keyboard player as support to finish the song. It is fun to see these Nightwish reactions as everyone who hears them for the first time gets their veery first Floorgasm...

    Nice review. I loved how you were just talking about how much you missed her high notes and she immidiately hit you with her high voice. That is Floor for you. :) And then the closing part of the song so beautifull.
    Basically the song is about the break-up with their first vocalist (Tarja Turunen). Going in to details would be quiet long. But lets say they fired her in a way that was not handled in the best possible way (to put it mildly). Even though he was backed by all the band members. It was Tuomas who received the brunt of negative feedback from the press and fans. This caused a serious depression and he saw everyting he ever worked for go up in smoke. At this point he even disbanded the group. He was actually considering suicide. To prevent himself from doing so in reality he wrote this song in which he commits artistic suicide. It took him quiet a while to recover and he even moved back in with his parents who slowly build up his confidence again (the closing part of the song).

    One of the main criticisms of Annete Olzon (the album vocalist for this song) was that, while she was great in a studio setting, she couldn't reliably hold the high notes in concert. As a result, she sang the lyrics to the opening of the Pacifica section about an octave lower, which was a bit disappointing. Check out one of the early concert recordings to hear this.

    FYI - Original, the higher parts are sung by boys sopranos: Guy Elliot and Tom Williams from the Reigate St. Mary's Choir. Probably recorded in the Angel Studios in London by producer / arranger Pip Williams) At live performances Nightwish still uses that studio tape. Now with Floor the 2nd and 3rd high part is done by herself. Much nicer of course. In the version of TPATP in Buenos Aires-2015 ( th-cam.com/video/Q9Szl78kwGo/w-d-xo.html ) she still has some trouble with the middle high section, but no longer at Wembley (2016). :-) That version in Mexico by the way sounds a bit better to my taste. ( is just a live band without a film and all extra fuss )
    I like your way of listening!

    This show at Wembley comparing to Wacken and Tampere DVDs is a bit shitty imo. My least favourite of all Nightwish live DVDs. Most of all sound quality is terrible. The same song live in Mexico City is way better (the same DVD as this performance).
    The voice at the beginning belongs to young boy.
    The song was inspired by The Pit and the Pendulum story. A lot of personal issues in this song. Read also the lyrics backwards.
    I've never noticed this "Webmley" xD

      Megrez I have to agree with you man, I’ve heard many songs from this concert and they are not the best, as an example, the version of this song from the concert in Dallas sounds waaaayyyy better,.

    The heartbeat? I assume it is a reference to Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart". In this case not so much (as in the story) of having committed a crime, but more having his (Tuomas') true feelings revealed, and being (unwantedly) apparent.

    Floor is amazing! I usually say that there are some songs that she has appreciated because of the versatility of her voice. Of course I can not fail to comment that this song is incredible (it's in my top 5 of the band's favorite songs)
    Oh, just to record: The first time I heard this song, I had the same reaction as yours. Hahaha!

    Another comment, as an observer:
    Keep the lighting down. Dunno why, but the lighting here on you just works. Some of your other vids are a bit too high key. Can’t put a finger on it. But as a photo and video editor of overt a decade, _this_ look works for you. Some of your vids are way brighter and it’s not you... if that makes sense.
    This lighting flatters you, is what I mean to say.
