    Such a sweet moment when Emppu checks up on Tuomas. Emppu and Marko were there during that hard time. They decided together that it was time to separate with Tarja, but the world seemed to blame Tuomas. I guess now you understand why you had to wait a bit before doing this reaction. It is a heavy song. With a heavy subject and heavy emotions. Not 'just a song' for the video list. That last 'mom and dad' part always fucking gets me. It makes my eyes pee.

    During the few times that they have performed this live, Tuomas has the FOH sound engineer cut the vocals from his in ear monitor, with only the music playing. Tuomas has also said that with Floor singing it, it is the only time that it has the emotion and heart and soul that he originally wrote it with.

    When you get to The Greatest Show on Earth, there's a decision to be made, and the army is divided on this (not in a bad way). There are two recommended versions of the "Show". One is from this Wembley Arena concert, and there's a special guest. The Tampere show is a bigger outdoors production. Epic, one might say. And you'll hear the special guest's parts from a recorded track, anyway.
    If you do the Tampere version, please don't be fooled by the 17 min HD version. It's shortened, the real track is over 21 minutes long. And please watch it all the way to the end through the credits. Everything there is part of the song.

    I have always felt he wrote parts of this as he transitioned through the stages of grief & depression; each section emotes sadness, or pain, or anger, or hopelessness, with an underlying hopefulness in escape and healing through his love of nature, the support of his family, and those friends/fans who did not crucify him like many did.

    I know that the background is important to understand this masterpiece. But to me - this really shows Tuomas's genius as a writer, and Floor's ability to express the soul in a song. I fully understand why they both were satisfied with the result. Both Anette and Marko tried, but couldn't come even close.
    Tuomas has described a deep depression in music and words, and Floor brought it to life = 2 x genius.
    Tuomas describtion of myriads of thoughts running wild and then becoming deep, described with instruments, and dramatic changes, soprano boys, and Floor (who wasn't around when he wrote it!).
    I don't see any other band who can perform anything like this, so effectful.
    Great reaction from you 👍 🤘 🤘 - it is obvious that you get a lot deeper insight on your first listinging, than most people. You understand what, how and why Tuomas did the composing to create this 👍🤘🤘

      Without Anette there would only be Marko's darker and "nastier" demo version. The album was the "album which saved my life" - T. Holopainen. Floor was still singing and growling away (and kicking ass) with After Forever/Northward, which Tuomas in his kindness did not want to even try to break-up, when this masterpiece was first born.

    When Tuomas fired Tarja, the original singer, with whom he’d been friends for years, he was depressed. When he got a ton of backlash from the fans, it made that even worse. He got to the point where he contemplated suicide, and ultimately write this song...killing himself in a song so he didn’t have to do it in real life. Note the times where Emppu and Marko go over to him to check on him, as the song is incredibly personal to him and dredges up bad memories. The last part...Mother and Father... are basically the words his mother said to him when he was so down.

  • @papaverweg
    @papaverweg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This song is chronologically but played from Finnish to start. All parts are build around one of the “Five stages of grief”
    1. Denial
    2. Protest (of anger)
    3. Negotiate and fight
    4. Depression
    5. Acceptance
    This song is autobiographical and not just fantasy, although it carries lots of fantastic elements in it. Tuomas the composer chose as main framework the story of Edgar Alan Poe ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’. The song starts with ‘White Lands of Emphatically’ (Book of Stephan King)
    Part one ‘the White Lands of Emphatica’ referring to Stephan King’s book.
    The poet without a rhyme: Tuomas had been shocked for a long time and had lost his motivation to go on living, the reactions to the sending of Tarja had affected him so badly. The poet could not make any poem anymore.
    The shoulder cries more: The poet (Tuomas) understand that he has no right to find comfort on her shoulder (he can’t go for comfort to Tarja whom he used to find comfort in the past) now that they cried more due to him. You can't cry on a shoulder they said you did wrong. He also can’t go to his hometown village cause mostly they are also pro Tarja. So Tuomas has been slaughtered by Tarja’s fans (All initially members are from the same town) due to her dismissal but the fans are angry about that. So Tuomas is the whore in the middle between what the cold world (the audience) demands or choosing what is right for the band future (and ask God to justify him). So Tuomas really has to be slaughtered (like Christ) in order to save the band’s future. And he knows it and takes it for granted.
    2nd robber on Christ's right can cause some confusion. Is he referring to the painting 'The Last Supper' in that case he is the Judas, or does he mean the 2nd crucified next to Christ who after having also spotted finally 'takes the right side' and asks for forgiveness? Because there was no second cross to the right of Christ. There were only 3 crosses and Christ was hanging in the middle.
    (See also lyrics song & album with the same name: ‘Dark Passion’s Play’, ‘Death Boy’s Poem’ album: Wishmaster and ‘Deep Silence Complete’ also album title song) The fans spit on his grave and wish his body to rot in hell. (They will even not reach out and help him) the dead must bury their own dead. He is tired of everyone who’s opposing him.
    Tuomas (the death poet) has stopped willing to write songs for Tarja and also he lost his inspiration, energy and especially enthusiasm for continuing writing songs in general (1,000 pages erased text) He rather wants to die to get rid of everything and die (looking for comfort in the deep: suïcide) in the ocean. Even the mayor of their hometown took Tarja’s side. (All band members were from that same town and NW was their proud, so even the town was cut into halves).
    The last part is the welcoming by his parents in heaven so he did get his justification at least for make the right decision to fired Tarja but is aware that the curse was that NW did loose a lot of fans in this.
    In general: Marco representing the enemy camp and Floor representing Tuomas side. And yes, at several moments Marco and Troy stand with Tuomas giving him mental support.

    • @572Btriode
      @572Btriode 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @O. Van Gent I see it slightly differently, Marko indeed is the enemy camp portraying the media and fan backlash and vilification, to me they see Tuomas as the betrayer and killer of everything they have come to adore, thus the reference to the second robber on the right is indeed metaphorically the betrayer Judas Iscariot when looking OUT of Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper." They want him dead for the outrage, infanticide, connected to his common character of "Boy", amongst others that we know, like poet (here), writer (here) and dreamer (here too). Marko conveys this aggression excellently.
      The final part, Mother and Father, I believe is reported to be what his parents said to him almost verbatim when he confided in them that he could not bear the pressure and strain any further and was seriously contemplating ending his life. They're saying he has so much more music and poetry inside as yet unleashed, which would be wasted, but whatever he decides they will always love him as their son, it's what any parent would do.
      However, notwithstanding all that and our various views and interpretations of lyrics, Tuomas does not explain the lyrics even to Floor who has to vocally characterise them, it is up to the listener, when pushed he will say it's near enough. He has said you should not question any artist, the interest and mystery is making your our interpretations, for example he has said if you could question Da Vinci about the Mona Lisa in all the detail and background, then the intrigue, interest, magic and mystery would be lost.
      We all see it differently, of course.
      But let's get one thing straight that I have seen here, Tuomas did not fire Tarja alone, the whole band signed the letter and I understand Emppu and Marko had already said they'd leave if the situation continued, they all signed the letter but Tuomas got all the blame.
      For Mr. Versifyer, you saw Emppu go over to Tuomas near the start to ask if he was OK and coping with it, and at the end when both him and Marko stand with him in support, but what you didn't see was the support from Floor in the song immediately before in this Wembley set, "Alpenglow", a more upbeat and diametrically opposed song would be hard to imagine ! In the final chorus, Floor stands on the podium with Tuomas and sings the line "Conquering the darkest places" directly at him.

      Did you write Finnish with two N's as a pun or did you just spell Finish wrong?

    • @1982jeepcj8
      @1982jeepcj8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll just add that the Tarja, was Tuomass muse, almost all of the music was written with her singing and capabilities in mind, personally I think that is part of the struggle that Annette had in trying to sing in Tarja's place, in a lot of ways, the fans were not accepting of Annette and this was not fair to her, for us to expect her to sing the same way. This song represents the hurt in this situation, Master, Passion, Greed is the anger, so angry it is said that Nightwish wrote death metal. The band has moved on from this, and I think in some ways is ashamed of how this went down. In some ways the fans are too, I think.

    • @EitherProductions
      @EitherProductions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was "Robber, second ..." instead of "Second robber..." it would've definitely been clearer if it's meant to mean Judas. And since the section is called Dark Passion Play, it immediately invokes the scene of Jesus' death as that is what the Passion Play part is referring to. I think he might be alluding to both, given the word structure, and we are meant to pick our own connection as the audience.

    • @572Btriode
      @572Btriode 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EitherProductions Yep, Tuomas never explains the lyrics, even to the band and I believe he has said so publicly.
      ISTR he said it is the interest, intrigue and mystery that engages the avid listener, for example he said, if you could go back in time and interrogate da Vinci about exactly what he was thinking and painting for The Mona Lisa, then knowing everything would completely spoil the art as we see it today, it would become very ordinary.
