This was interesting - however, not sure mixing mobile OS and desktop OS gives a super clear comparison.
Embedded System OS inclusion would push Linux pretty high up the list as well - a lot of commercial electronics use Linux as the basis of their products (fridge, ovens, hot tubs, thermostats, etc, etc)

Android is based on the Linux kernel. So in a way, Linux on the desktop (or mobile device) finally won and is now the #1 OS. Just not in the way most open source advocates envisioned.

In my UK years after March 2013, at the primary school through to the first 2 years of high (2016 or 17) they never upgraded to Windows 8 or 8.1 due to the bad reception even though the computers met the hardware spec and when the school wanted Windows 10 they just replaced all the computers.

Also, computers of the time did not have enough memory as Vista needed at least 2GB to operate smoothly but most computers of the time had only 512MB Also the drivers that worked with XP needed to be changed and weren't always available. Looking at the data sources and that it is adjusted by user-agents, a more correct title would be "Most Popular Consumer/End User Operating Systems 1999 - 2022" because OS used on servers are more or less ignored because a server normally don't make outbound browser connections and therefor has no user-agent to measure.
This explains why Linux, even as it is the most used server OS, never makes it over 5%.

Interesting to see how popular Win XP was - and whilst it was at a time when there weren't very many alternatives, it was really only killed when MS stopped supporting it in favour of Win 7/8.
IIRC, MS even extended the period of service time for XP by an extra five years, because it was so popular and they didn't get a better decent version out in time...
Of course, what I would like to see is OS data for pre-1999, because there were a lot fewer devices, and a lot had proprietary OS built in...
I mean, that was a time when you had to state whether software for PC was IBM-compatible... before the standardisation of Windows 95...

"Numbers are showing market share by specific OS, measured by amount of units shipped worldwide". Yes, that explains why there are almost no servers mentioned (they would bring up the Linux share to roughly 90%) and Windows 11 despite being still some sort of beta has such a high share. Almost every Win 11 shipped machine in companys gets downgraded to Win10 for reliability or Upgraded to Linux to work productive. And mobile devices are mixed with normal devices, I think it would make sense to divide mobile and productive devices apart. Shooting portrait films with mobile Devices for Ticktock and doing productive work with normal landscape Monitors are to very different usecases.
If Adobe would make their software available for Linux, Apple devices would suffer and get around 3% market share since Apple really tries to get rid of their loyal customers, the only reason to stick to Apple is Adobe.
Windows 11 shoved many people to Linux Mint, in combination with e.g. Softmaker Office (only paid once) and Nextcloud this is an alternative since more than 4 years which actually works.

according to this chart, linux is on a decline. you talk about how mobile devices should be seperated but want servers to enter the chart lol. also i am not sure if there are that many servers in the world compared to enduser devices that linux would make it to 90%. on top of that and as you most likely know yourself, there is no single linux OS, its just a ton of different distributions. imagine if they packed all versions of windows into one category and called it "windows". but maybe to help linux out a little, technically android runs the linux kernel too so at the end of the day it still dominates :D

When I was born in mid-2008 I lived in an appartement in brazil (my home country and yes I still live). I changed to a house later on maybe on the same year and the house had a room with a computer pre installed with windows xp, i have no idea when i started using it but i did use it (I was so scared of the start up and shut down sounds because it was too loud and when I did use it I made sure the speakers where on 0) the computer was used until around mid 2017 when the pc was changed and to this day the os on the computer is windows 10.
Weirdly when I heard windows 11 launched my computer can't run windows 11 which means i'm stuck on windows 10 (the version being used is windows 10 pro 2H22)

There is a disproportion in this graphic. For example, Android or Mac OS are listed as one OS across all versions versus Windows, which is listed with each version separately.
This is just a statistic of desktop distributions. However, Linux OS is on all kinds of devices like routers, modems, NAS... and desktop distributions are only a small part. If all devices were counted completely, I think Linux OS would be the most used OS, ignoring the fact that Android is based on the Linux OS kernel... (I say this as a Windows OS user.)

You know, Me and Vista flopped because of poor stability, but I'm not sure if 8 was stable. I think I'm nowhere near alone in that I saw how much they changed the whole concept of a start menu and just said no. Windows 10 corrected that mistake quickly! Windows without a proper start menu is like when Coke tried to change their formula to taste more like Pepsi.

Windows 8 was perfectly stable - it was just intended to be a tablet OS. And because of that it was incredibly unintuitive and frustrating to use on a desktop.

@@MyMotherTheCar that makes sense to me! It didn't work at all as a desktop OS without a proper start menu and normal windows.

Win95, Win95, and WinME were all a GUI running on top of DOS. Microsoft hid it from end users (and to thwart DR-DOS), but they were still running on DOS and so didn't feature true multi-tasking, and were prone to crashing (hanging) like DOS.
WinNT, Win2000, XP, and on were based on NT. Much more stable and featured real multi-tasking.
Vista wasn't unstable. It was probably more stable and objectively better than XP. The problem with Vista was that up to XP, user programs in Windows ran with admin privileges. This made it trivial for viruses and malware to hose your system. Vista adopted the Unix model, where user programs run with user privileges, and need to be granted admin (root) privileges to make any major changes to the system. Unfortunately, pretty much all Windows programs up til then were written assuming they had admin privileges. So when they ran on Vista, they'd request admin privileges every few minutes. Which got really annoying.
Windows 7 wasn't necessarily better than Vista. Just that enough time had passed that most Windows programs had been rewritten to work with only user privileges. (OK, it was better that Vista in that Microsoft got their software bloat under control. Vista needed about 4x more RAM than XP. While 7 needed the same amount of RAM as Vista.)
Windows 8 was a disaster because Microsoft was pushing a tablet-like interface. They saw Apple making 30% off of all software sold for iOS, and wanted a piece of that. So they made the Microsoft Store, where they'd take a 30% cut of all Windows software sold. Microsoft then tried to force it on everyone by removing the desktop interface from Win 8 (and your ability to install software via anything other than the Microsoft Store). There was enough customer backlash that they quickly released Win 8.1 which restored the desktop and your ability to install programs without needing to buy it through the Microsoft Store.

@@solandri69 the second word of ur comment should say "Win98".
This comment is invaluable. It shows Microsoft's mistake in Windows 8.0.
Also soon or later Microsoft will leave desktop and go with cloud based Windows.
Then i would definetely stop using Windows at all.
However, i disagree with u on that Windows 7 wasnt better than Vista.
Wasnt Windows 7 more optimized than Vista, instead of just lack of bloatware?

Many corporations use cheap mini PCs with old laptop processors and old XP era hardware with tweaked/custom forms of Ubuntu running on them for office and internal specialised program use, just unhooked from the internet. Probably invisible to the source of this chart. The company I work for has well over 100 linux computers at my location that, once logged into, remote login to an XP virtual machine for our copyright 1986 software (Im assuming it was deemed notably cheaper than paying to have an impressivly intricate system for its time updated to an OS the machines cant handle and subsequently updating all hardware) A previous major retail employer I worked for (big name hardware store) used a stripped down Xubuntu on all computers and registers.
