Austro-Hungarian Coffee Grinder Restoration - From Flea Market Find to Kitchen Treasure

  • In this video, I restore a coffee grinder produced between 1867 and 1918.
I bought this time-forgotten and rusty antique grinder at a nearby flea market. When I saw this piece, I knew I had to rescue/restore it.
The Old Coffee Grinder was in disrepair when I received it. The old finish was almost gone, cracked, rusted, and missing elements.
The restoration process was challenging but rewarding.
If you want to learn more about antique coffee grinders or their restoration, I encourage you to watch this video.
    More about the restoration process:
As mentioned above, I purchased this coffee grinder at a giant flea market for about $60.
The grinder restoration process took about a week (8-10 hours daily).
I decided to keep all the original parts and not intervene too much because this piece aimed to get an antique look while keeping the wear marks to confirm the authenticity. I was impressed to discover that I am not the first to have worked on this machine made during the Austro-Hungarian Empire (written on it - Oesterreich Ungarische Industrie).
The video shows how someone with an excellent craftsmanship gift repaired the cracks from the top part. I had only to cover it, and his technique made me want to try it one day.
After disassembly, I cleaned the large rusted parts with a laser. I scoured the rusted parts with a 2000-watt laser. It was satisfactory, and everything went quickly. If you want to learn more about this machine, www.sfxlyxc.co...
We cleaned the smaller parts with the sandblaster because it was more convenient and accessible.
I painted the significant parts with transparent red and hot burnished all the features that didn't need painting.
Then, I had to build a new drawer and stand. I used bamboo wood for both, which I coated with wood oil.
I hope I caught everything, but if you have any questions, feel free to comment, and I'll get back to you!
    Cheers! Johnny.

I must say you did a really nice job on the restoration,I especially liked the color you picked and the trim color, That laser tool is awesome!! if I may make one criticism, I didnt like the inside of the drawer, fine coffee grinds can get into those spaces between the sides and bottom and will eventually cause the wood to rot,Perhaps make a tin liner? but all in all it's awesome and I subscribed to your chanel!

Possibly a stupid question but compared to sandblasting, has the surface the same Level of cleanness?
Sandblasting seems cleaner to me or is it just the different surface appearance?

    • @rustyshadesrestoration
      @rustyshadesrestoration  ปีที่แล้ว

Not a stupid question at all. The sandblasting can be cleaner because the residue doesn't stay on the surface; it is blasted away, while the laser doesn't work the same.

Big deal. I could do that. ... Well, except for the laser, the sandblasting, the metal repair, the powder coating, the blueing, the woodwork, the filing, the remembering where all the parts go, and the lettering. The incredible amount of know-how, I almost forgot. Oh, and the cat flyby. 🥴
Seriously, Johnny, you do beautiful things when you start from nothing at all!!! 🎉🙏🙌

Początek filmu mnie zastanowił gdzie nie używasz czegoś do penetracji korozji i ułatwienia odkręcanie, ale do momentu gdzie czyścisz laserem wydaje się wszystko ok ale... . Zastanawia mnie dlaczego nie naprawiłeś pękniętego mocowania koła zębatego i mocno zużytego wałka? Pominąłeś także wstawienie tulejki do korby.
