Clothes Wringer Restoration - Water Damage Restoration

- In this video, I restore an antique clothes wringer made by Anchor Brand in the US in 1898.
More about the restoration:
When I saw this piece for sale on a sales website, I knew from the start that it would be the subject of an exciting restoration video. This Clothes wringer is quite rare; only a few have been preserved due to their size, but also the fact that they are mostly wood, which has been subjected to water contact for many years at a time.
The restoration process went well, with no problems but with great surprises. I didn't expect to find the wood so rotten on the inside. However, I kept all the original elements and restored the water-damaged wood.
I cleaned everything very well and then applied a wood treatment, after which I used a thick coat of wood putty, which I sanded after drying. I also applied a coat of paint for long-lasting protection.
The parts of the wood on which the engraving was still visible were retouched by hand, and the elements on which the engraving had disappeared were re-engraved using the Falcon 2 Laser from Creality.

I worked on this antique clothes wringer with much love and patience over three weeks and am thrilled with how it turned out. It works and is now saved and stored well. It probably ended up in the landfill if I hadn't stepped in.
Please ask me if you have any questions about what I used and why. I answer everyone!
More about the antique Clothes Wringers:
In 1888, Ellen Eglin invented her groundbreaking device, a particular type of clothes-wringer, which was a machine that had two wooden rollers attached to a crank; after being washed and rinsed, wet clothes were fed between these rollers and an immense amount of water was squeezed out. The clothes were then hung to dry, which took significantly less time due to the wringer. Although the design was perceived as a popular product well into the 20th century, Eglin received very little credit or financial success for her invention.
The wringer I restored was made in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA.

Hi folks! Here is my latest restoration project! I've worked on this old buddy daily for about 3 weeks and immensely enjoyed it! I hope you will enjoy the video, too! Thank you so much for all your support! Best, Johnny!
It turned out beautiful! Love it!❤
la pièce originale était déjà magnifique les matériaux de qualité.Bravo
Absolutely beautiful work, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video ❗️🙏🏻🥰🤩
@@miquellemeshishnek5338this is a laundry tool my grandmother had and also my mom 😮
NUNCA tinha visto um secador de roupas bem bem bem antigo, será novidade para meus olhos. O se é um gênio de marceneiro restauração.
The heart-shaped tops on those bolts, that graceful curve on the metal crank handle -- can you imagine a present-day manufacturer investing such elegant design in a workaday product? Or even manufacturing something that is still in decent shape 100+ years later? Lovely job!
That's right. The elements are unique and beautiful 😍
Fantastic that you restored the engraving. Lots of hard work and time but it was worth it 😊
Yes it was! Thank you!
And his hand eye must be FANTASTIC to do that all without any mistakes. I can barely colour a kids book.
I was wondering how well the printing survived. I wonder if it was burned in originally
I love seeing old pieces like this brought back to life. Very nice restoration
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing job... Just one small thing I noticed.
''Improved guide board FOR spreading the clothes''
Yup, good observation 👍 👌
A great restoration, I enjoyed very much. I prefer your hand restoration of the print on wood more than the lazier printer.
Thank you very much!
What a brilliant restoration, well done.
Thank you! 🙂
You have to appreciate how they made things back then. The imprint of the factory and the message on the wood is something I am not sure exist these days with anything but maybe handmade furniture. Its really cool to see to me.
That's right ✅️ 👏
The laser engraving was cool but the letter positioning and sometimes the font used is off. I love those old styled wing bolts, almost elegant looking.
Hi! Thank you. The lettering wasn't positioned the same because all the lettering/designs were reproduced from a visible subject, wringer from the Internet. On my wringer, I couldn't distinguish what was written anymore. To find the perfect position afterwards from the first shot it is impossible, only if you are 🦸♂️ Best, Johnny
Wow does that bring back memories. My first washer as a married Lady had a ringer on it. The washer was next to the garage sink. Rung out the clothes and hung them on the clothes line.
We call them a mangle in the UK instead of a wringer :) My mom got her finger caught in one when she was 5 and it's still kind of flat and noticeably squished over 60 years later, I can't imagine how much that hurt! You did a great job and when you redid all that drawing by hand I was seriously impressed, props to you for that
One of the better restoration sites on you tube
Thank you!
I really appreciate that you enhanced the lettering and pictures on this restoration.
All that was a nice touch.
I'm glad to know that you enjoyed the restoration process. 🙂
Interesting video, I liked the moment where you restore the drawing with the building, and the final result was surprising, I didn't think that this thing would look so beautiful
Thank you! Cheers! 🙂
Of course I had to look up the item, these Anchor brand clothes wringers came out in 1896. To find something this spectacular from the 19th century that hasn’t rotted away, what a gem.
Re-touching that image by hand, WOW! You have the patience of a saint.
😀
So happy you kept the original printing. Such patience to repaint every detail, but it looks great. It's always nice to see part of our history retained.
oh my thank you for saving the pictures on the wood i thought you were going to sand them off great job i love it
Uh, no, no, no. That would be very silly.
I'm glad you enjoyed the result! Best, Johnny
I can imagine all that soap and fuzz helped create all that cruddy stuff you cleaned out during dismantling. Great video and great restoration!
Thank you so much!
This video couldn't have come at a better time! I picked up this exact model, at a yard sale, this summer. I will be referring back to this video more than once.
Wow, that's a remarkable coincidence! I hope my video will be helpful.
You are an Amazing Artist!! Thank you for all your hard work. You are saving important pieces of earlier life here in America.
Thank you so much l, Mary!
rhooo awesome restoration ! this work is very hard ! now it's beautifull and functionnal ! cogratulations !
Thank you! Cheers!
For something made o wood 15 years ago to be in that condition is amazing, can't wait to see it restored. Xx
Unfortunately you have engraved "Improved guide board OR spreading the clothes" but I believe it should be "...FOR spreading..."
Apart from that, this was a really great video, I love that you managed to save all the timber pieces, even the really bad ones. The wringer now looks like new, when someone first bought it for their home a long, long time ago.
That's very possible; the good thing is that I can correct it whenever I want. 🙂
And I'll do it because now it makes sense.
I'm happy that you liked the rest of my work and the result.
Beautiful job on the lettering.
Thank you!
Fantastic restoration
Thanks! 🙂
Amazing work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What an incredible job of preserving/restoring this piece of history. You are so talented. When we visited the farm, the three of us kids helped Grandma with the laundry. She had a ringer like this that was attached to a big tub on wheels. We would bring it in to the kitchen from the short hallway next to it.
We had a lot of fun scrubbing on the washboard and ringing out the clothes. Then we’d take the full wash baskets out to the clothesline and hang them up. I’m sure Grandma treasured the relief of this household drudgery.
Thank you for your kind words and for sharing those beautiful memories with us! 🙂
Yes I remember that ringer My Grand mother had one it's nice to see one of them I know some of the people will remember but the young people have No idea thanks for the memory God bless you thanks for the history and the restoration of Time past
I'm happy that I could bring back those beautiful memories to you! 🙂
Wow! What a fantastic job you did. It looks so good. I love it!!! Thank you for sharing. 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
ANOTHER beautiful restoration!
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video! Best, Johnny
Love it !!!!
Absolutely gorgeous
Thank you! Cheers!
That was a trip down memory lane, my grandmother had one like that and it was my job to swing the handle on a Monday after school..😅
"Should I get the forever glue?" I've never seen a wringer before. Never before in my life have I seen one. I've seen one in a cartoon. 😂 But that is a beautiful restoration!
Hahaha 😄 I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!
Great stuff. I'm so glad you kept all the writing. Magic!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
love the myriad items you restore. thank you for sharing with us.
I'm happy to know that! 🙂
Прекрасная работа. Спасибо за доставленное удовольствие увидеть этот древний аппарат.🎉
Thank you so much!
This was so much more than a restoration. Thank you for your incredible attention to detail and workmanship.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pesky old woodworm, little blighters, great job, love the blue 👍
Thank you!
This is absolutely amazing! The part you manually retouched the wood pieces, and you could've done it digitally, showed us how dedicated you are. Great job! And I loved to watch the test of it.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching! 🙂
Excellent job. I actually remember my grandmother having one.
Great piece of history
That brings back some memories. My great-grandmother had one of those. Appreciate the attention to detail you gave it. 👍
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video and that I could bring back those beautiful memories to you! 🙂
WELL DONE MY FRIEND...VERY WELL DONE!!!
I'm glad you like it! Thank you! 🙂
... excellent result! Congrats! 😉🦊
Thank you! 🙂
My Mom used one of these with her washtub. It was a great day in Morgan Hill when she got an electric washer with the motor driven wringer on top.
Beautiful memories 🙂
Beautiful restoration but what really impressed me was the patience and steady hand with that pen !
Thank you very much!
Absolutely amazing. Well done
Thank you very much!
I love that you wen over the old imprinting to bring it back to life. But does that devalue the piece at all from a collector's point of view?
Congratulations, grate work of restoration!!!!
Thank you 😊
Nice job! 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! 🙂
Incredible work ❤ Good job, I love it
Thank you so much 💓
Very nice. Glad you were able to restore the engraving.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
Hello from France
Beautiful restoration. So much patience to redo the inscriptions by hand
Thank you very much!
Love to see how much you saved it. The blue really compliments the wood
Great work! I can remember using one of these.
Thank you! Really? Where are you located?
Amazing restoration!
Thank you so much 💓
Amazing any wood was left intact! Great resto!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Amazing … well done
Many thanks!
木製部分を新品にしないで、元の部分を残してレストアされている動画はとても少ないですが、素晴らしいと思います。
尊敬に値するレストアでした。ありがとうございました。
This was so enjoyable to watch. I love restoration videos and seeing the beauty of an item come alive again. Your pen and ink was perfect. Really loved this one. 🙋🏻♀️
Thank you for your kind words. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the restoration process. 🙂
Very nice work!
Here's a tip: for larger missing wood sections, don't use filler - it has a different density and expanding properties than wood itself. It doesn't matter on small repairs but it accumulates over big lengths. Rather clean out the section with a router and make a wooden insert. For irregular pieces you'll sometimes need to build a jig for your router so the end result is a plane surface that can receive the insert, which then has to be brought into shape with a plane and chisel. The bond between the old piece and the insert will be much more resistant, especially as a preservation method. Would be really nice to see that kind of wood work here! 😊
Thank you for the tip! 🙂
A lot of work with gorgeous result❤
Yes it was!
Superb restoration. A pleasure to watch. I love it.
Glad you enjoyed it
This is a darn good and professional restoration. I enjoyed watching it very much. You have a lot of patience. Congratulations sir.
Thank you very much! 🥰
Holy crap! I can’t believe you restored the artwork!! That is amazing!!!
Thanks! 😁
I liked the restoration,, but I wish you could have etched the words right on top of the originals instead of having the originals showing up in the background, Loved how you did the lettering and the building by hand though,, it came out great.
Thank you! Yes, I would love that too, but the graphic design was made on the top of a different wringer found on the web that had visible the words, so I couldn't arrange them right on the top of the other ones.
The old ones will disappear completely, especialy if I will use them and I will to dry faster my cleaning clothes for workshop. 🙂
Wow that wood is over 100 years old. Great restoration.
Thank you! 🙂
The wringers were the golden years better than wringing fabrics with our hands.
Such a great piece of history that you brought back and restored. Thanks so much I so enjoy your channel and your work. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you, David! 🙂
Good day sir! Your project will hopefully be my guide..you see this past weekend I bought the exact same model at a flea market...mine is in rougher shape than the one you started with..I'd like to bring it up to speed in so far as a working condition..that will probly require new wood.Your work is excellant and inspirational as well..many thank yous for putting it on line for us.
Good luck! 🙂
It’s so awesome you can save a literal piece of history like this bravo and keep up the great work!
Thank you! Will do!
Such a beautiful restoration. 😃😃
Thank you very much!
Awesome work 👏
Thank you so much, Zoran!
@@rustyshadesrestoration you welcome.
Very nice!
Thanks!
Wonderful restoration, I remember my grandparents using one similar.
Thank you so much! I'm glad that I could bring back those memories to you!
Incredible! I remember my mom washing clothes with an old wringer washer.
WOW!!! Very impressive, to retouch all that printing and illustration by hand!! My hand would not be near steady enough!
Super robota, fajnym smaczkiem pełne odtworzenie napisów. Powodzenia w kolejnych projektach
Dziękuję! Pozdrawiam
Really didn't expect the hand retouching on the wording and illustrations. I thought it looked good worn out, but then the retouching made the pieces look so outstanding! Great work! ❤
Thank you! 🙂
Great!!!👍🙌
Thank you 😊
I love history and this was a brilliant restoration of it! i have a miniature version of this with the wash tub.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
Amazing restoration 😊
Thank you, Andrew!
Wow! What a fantastic restoration on this old washing wringer. You did an absolute amazing job. I love that you kept all the wood. Its incredible how you did all the lettering by hand and design by machine. I really enjoyed watching this video. Looking forward to seeing your next one.
Be safe 😊
Thank you very much, Lisa! I am so happy that you enjoyed the restoration process. Best safe too! Best, Johnny
You amaze me and yes the whole video is mesmerizing. Thanks❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
My brother and I would have to ring the clothes out for my mom on one of those. Not wanting to do it, we'd do as fast as we could to get done. Naturally one cranking, the other putting laundry in fingers got in the way. Thank you for the great video and the memories. Be safe
I'm so glad that I could bring back those beautiful memories to you! Best, Johnny
Incredible job! I love the blue❤
Thank you!
I remember those. Along with the barrel with the wringer at the top…lol😂 great job!❤
I just remembered because mom got her hair stuck in those rollers once….
Excellent restoration, Rusty! This was probably a labor of love project, which turned out exceedingly well. Loved the video; thank you for sharing it. :)
I'm so happy to know that you enjoyed the project. I did put a lot of love on it like I usually do with all my projects, but yes, this antique is exceptional and beautiful. Thank you for your kind words! Best, Johnny
@@rustyshadesrestoration You know, Johnny, I'm an artist like you, tho I'm not a restorer, at least not of furniture, lol; but, we artists can see beauty in anything and everything; for example, a piece of concrete, or tarmac glistening and irridescent after a rain shower, and yes, the wringer is beautiful too. :)
great restoration job making sure this delicate older unit worked like new - great job !!
Thank you!
That close ringer is a working piece of art.
🙂
You not only had all of the tools to do the job you had the memory to know where all of the pieces went back together.
Congratulations on the hard work, the result is amazing
Thank you so much! 😀
Beautiful restoration,I applaud you.another piece of history saved.great video.just continue on doing what your doing.kudos 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thank you so much, Tom! 🤠
Beautiful work!
Thank you!
Wow i love it!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
@@rustyshadesrestoration I did indeed I love the blue on it. Great Job!
Nice job, great touching up!
Thank you! 🙂
When I was a kid, we went to visit my grandparents, and my grandmother had this, along with an old tub washer and mangle, and I was fascinated watching her use it....
Beautiful memories!
Tbh I'd love to bring mangles/wringers back, I feel like they are way more efficient than spin cycles and would make line drying awkward/delicate pieces much faster too
