I wish we could reverse all this and go back to high street stores like Blockbuster and Game with physical copy's of games/blu rays etc. Im 41 now and i miss the good old days going down to Blockbuster on a weekend and choosing a game and a film to rent, then picking up the takeaway food on the way home. Before Blockbuster as a kid we had local video rental stores at the local shops where you could rent VHS/DVD and games consoles etc. It feels almost too easy now to just download/stream something, i feel we have lost some of that special excitement feeling that came with having to actually go out and see/meet people at the store and also browsing the shelves for a good game to get.

Here in the netherlands I did the same, only in local movie rental stores. I used to go out and rent movies with my dad, and also with friends and pick up food on the way back. I feel the same with buying games, for me there's no fun in sitting on the couch, press a button, and then you "own" a game that's somewhere in a void where you can't reach it. That's why I almost only buy physical. For me convenience isn't everything, I like going to a store or flee market or whatever to find games. Like you said, there's no excitement anymore when things go all digital.

I still buy everything physical and mostly secondhand. The only times I buy digital is when it is a very cheap game I don't care much about. I feel when going all digital, that there is something missing, the gaming experience is not complete when I can't actually hold the game I bought. Even when a new game releases, I can buy it cheaper physical a week later.
And selling games is always nice. I like going to a store and just browse through everything they have.
Here in the netherlands we have CEX, gamemania and NedGame (next to secondhand online trading). I have seen GAME abroad, but it felt a lot like GameMania, games next to boardgames, collectibles and merchandise.

It’s sad that physical items are dying out plus u can get physical copies of games so cheap after they’ve been out for a while, but digital copies are charged at full price even older titles and it’s wrong and disgusting. The only good thing about digital games is u don’t have to wait anymore to get a copy of a game, unlike back in the day when a big game would sell out everywhere and u would have to wait to buy or rent it. Now u can just preorder and as soon as the games released it starts downloading straight away

Used to be a cracking place 15 - 20 years ago but now it's just full of late 30 early 40 year olds like myself looking to rekindle them childhood memories of going in and buying the latest game but now I'm old I find paying 50+ quid for a game too steep. I'll go to CEX as there is always a pre owned version of the game a week or so after release at least a tenner cheaper.

I remember the days when I had my ps2 and I completed a new game I got for Xmas or birthday and I would go into game or games tatian and trade it in and come out with 3 or 5 games. We had an amazing game shop in norwich in the late 90s and 00s. Almost every Saturday the queue would be round the shop and out the door and the midnight releases were amazing made so many new friends while waiting in line to pick up a new game, especially cod modern warfare 2 for ps3 that was a special time to be a gamer.
It's so sad to think that game is going to stop selling physical games. You can't beat the feeling of walking into a game shop and looking through the preowned section and getting 3 games for like £30 or in gamestation 5 games for £20.

We've been conned, it is all to save the companies time, money and effort. PS1 games sometimes had 2 or 3 discs to get all the content on there. They could easily put it all on 2 discs for the physical of that particular game.
Nintendo is another example they will take a 32 GB game and stick half of it on a 16 GB cart and we have to download the other half instead of just using a 32 GB cart.

They can support it all they want, psychical media has always been a thorn in the side of devs. Preowned out the equation its just a matter of time now. Think about it, they don’t need a retailer making money off the back of their hard work they can just beam it straight in to peoples living rooms at a premium. But i do have to say in recent years the magic of game has vanished for me as it feel more like a merch store for game related things rather than a store for games like it used to be. Supermarkets often sell games for up £15-10 cheaper then Game, using the lost leader, predatory pricing tactics, so this is what’s ultimately destroyed Game. Then you get the likes of Amazon, eBay selling the same game cheaper. Game just cannot compete. Also, because there are not has many Game stores anymore you’re more likely to buy from Smyths, Argos or even curry’s.

I do understand people like to collect games to physically show them off but you’re really just showing off the box, not the disc. honestly as a collector of games there is often times that I pop in to view any games not on my radar. I very often pick them up. without having a decent game retailer on the highstreet means I will definitely spend less on games so its a bonus for my wallet but a massive negative for the games industry. I can see a future where a lot of indy games dont make it due to them not having advertising on shelving space. as for the way gaming is going with it being digital only. it will only take a big recession for the big 2 consoles to limit their online presence as they have to afford the upcosts of hosting and people will cut back and therefore I think there will come a time when we see a lot of digital purchases go missing with no recourse.

I stopped going into Game a few years back when that and the Sport Direct store which were both practically next to eachother anyway closed and merged in a new one further down the high street. When I say merged I mean the Game section was crammed up in the very back corner upstairs and was mainly toys and collectibles with only a few shelves of actual games. Never thought I would see the day where Argos had a better selection of gaming stuff you could buy in store than Game. CEX is pretty much the go to place these days though which is sad that there are so few choices now though because even when buying used media I like to be able to check the condition of the stuff and not hope something I buy online is sold in good condition.

The strongest business model of Cex or Game was trade in/exchange. They took £5-10 cut on it, sometimes more in case of brand new releases. The issue is that for £7 ish you can have a PS+ Extra or Game Pass for a month, with all the game selection.
So trading in older games, or buying them physical, makes no practical sense.
On to p you have companies wanting to cash out and more and more games do not have physical releases at all, and often those which have, are only drm launcher on CD.
    End of an era.

I feel that the only the reason their were physical copies of PS5/Switch games is because the game stores refused to sell the consoles unless they did. Will this trend continue or will PS6/Switch 2 decide they don't need game stores? I personally thing they'd be stupid if they did. I also feel that the recent trend of removing digital movies that you've already paid for is a warning that this could happen to digital games.

Most game outlets have been relegated to becoming pop up stores within sports direct that’s like a maze to find the store .
However for CEX they offer very little money for trade in and market value the price higher for resale .
It was like I went into a charity store and picked up Avengers Infinity War on Blu Ray for 99p by adding 1p for double the difference and came upto £1.00 and in another you can get 10 for that price.

They're not going under. If you look at the share price of the parent company (FTSE: FRAS.L), they're doing well. They're just in the midst of a transformation into being more of a general entertainment store, which is evident by the increased amount of toys and other entertainment-related merchandise. Because relying too heavily on triple-A releases that mostly occur during Q4 is not sustainable, so of course GAME has to diversify to allow for year-round sales or face a certain death. Not to mention that preowneds are clogging up the stores, which is why they're sunsetting that category. However, they still remain committed to physical games sales, so they have no plans to end sales this year.

Physical games went downhill from the moment the video game publisher's stopped with the detailed handbook or even the game map being included in the video game packaging. I was excited to read about GTA III on the bus ride home and couldn't wait to put the disc in and play it. Now the packaging is boring and the game disc has to be installed onto the ssd before it's even playable. But the nail in the coffin for physical media is how long you had to wait if pre-ordered games, sometimes you get it early but most times it arrives 1 or 2 days late in the post. Even game stores reserve games on the shelves for those who've pre-ordered. So if you was an impulse buyer like most gamer's are, you was outta luck come release day. That is why digital sales have shot up because it's readily available and the most convenient way to buy games.

I missed those days when games sold as physical box products, not digital service code.
God, I hope Nintendo doesn't reject physical games in the future, and I hope that the next-gen Nintendo console isn't the last physical system.
That's my three fears about the next-gen Nintendo console, Denuvo/DRM crap, lack of backwards compatibility, and digital only console.
Other than that, I hope indie game developers, AA game studios, and independent retail stores (such as PlayAsia, Book-Off, Press Play, and Meccha Japan for a example) will save physical media of video games, because indie game developers, AA game studios, and independent retail stores cares about you and listen to you.
