Swirling Tutorial on a guitar body with Humbrol Paints Borax Method swirl

  • Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. I have continued to swirl bodies with different paints. Two key things that I have learned is that you need the pipettes to flow the paint out and you need the paint to sit in the water a little bit longer. I was doing 3-5 mins and that was not it. 5-7 is what is working best

    Nice! Best & informative video I've seen as I'm researching this method & technique for myself!!
    I love this concept & look!! Thank you for the video!!!
    I would normally have 3-4 questions for you, but you provided answers to all of them within your video!
    This video not only answered all the questions I had for all the spray can version videos of this style paint job, but it resolves most of the problems I experienced with my first test run using spray cans by convincing me to go with the regular canned oil-based enamel paints & droppers (pipettes) method for better overall color control, longer working time & smoother application!!!
    I'm getting ready to paint my bassist's 1st bass guitar as a gift from his wife for their anniversary & I'm seriously considering using this technique, especially after my 1st test run (using the spray can version of this style) on a large plastic pencil box that I primed with Rust-Oleum (flat white) I then sprayed a combination of black Krylon automotive enamel & Rust-Oleum metallic charcoal & metallic silver
    (all gloss) into a 32 gal trash can half-full of fresh Florida well water. (approx 72 degrees +/-)
    After maybe 2 minutes of spraying I could already see the paint starting to solidify so I chose to stop there (it's only a test run) & shake the edges of the trash can to mix the colors up in lieu of stirring it with a stick. I've seen a few videos where solidified spray paint stuck to the stir stick & ended up clumping together ruining the swirl pattern & leaving large areas of water with no paint!
    I'm fairly satisfied with the overall results except for the areas where the paint globbed/clumped up which will require some serious sanding prior too & in-between clear coats!?
    ... I've since read that I maybe should have used all flat paints until final gloss clear-coat, but I'm not sure if that's the reason for globs/clumps of extra paint.
    THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

    Very nice! Love the "space" effect. It looks like it needs graphic of the Silver Surfer on the tail end or just zooming by the neck.
    I like this, thanks BigD.

    Hello! Love your tutorials...i am attempting dipping chopper fenders and having alot of frustration and errors, my practice pieces come out sweet using a smaller bucket..however when i am happy with colors and ready to dip the fenders in the large bin as soon as i load the paint on the water it skims over almost immediately! I am using testors. The recommended temp of 78 makes it dry out even faster than when the water is cooler! After seeing all your tutorials are you finding humbrol to be the best? If so is it imperative to leave the temp at 78 and how much borax do i need for a 45 gallon bin? I was putting in 4 cups is that too much? Sorry for the lengthy sob story i spent the whole day trying to get it right. .. metallic paint def doesn't work either for me!! help!!!

    Hey, I was inspired to swirl my guitar with this same method and used the Humbrol paints. I was wondering if you can recommend an aerosol finish option. I'm going with Deft aerosol lacquer for my final coat. Is there anything I should do to the enamel swirl before I proceed? Any other tips?

    After reading many forums/watching plenty of these videos, I'm ready to give it a go. The only thing I am unsure about at the moment is, do you need to use much (if any) paint thinner for the Humbrol paints?

    Could you do this with a guitar that has a grain on the finish? Or would the paint flow into the grain?

  • @mikespinelli2746
    @mikespinelli2746 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I followed your SOP but my paint clumped when I ran the wood stick thru the paint.. I thinned the Humbrol with a couple drop of thinner in ea can. Does room temp and humidity play a big part?

    Hey, love your videos. I've never heard you explain what the borax is for, or what it does. Does it add surface tension to the water so the paint floats better? Go Tigers.

    I used the same colours but because my bucket was too small i could not go side to side which is a very important part of the hole process that and clearing away the surface. I found the silver bubbles and didnt mix well at all. Also used testers model paint as the paint you use is banned in my country for being too toxic.

    Does the water not enter the cavities and cause the guitar body / neck to swell when it's dipped?

    • @bigdguitars
      @bigdguitars  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bigfoot Guitars The guitar is primed and its dipped for a few seconds. So its nothing that damages the body.

      +BigDGuitars - Thanks mate. I guess I'll just let it dry out thoroughly. Also, I'm assuming there's no kind of level sanding done to this coat before the clear coats are sprayed?

    I personally like it when there are bigger swatches or swirls of one main color with just a few other colors for effect. I have done paintings with these swirl patterns and the ones that sell the best are like how I described. Just a thought.

  • @maniactre
    @maniactre 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you sand the guitar and remove the paint and then apply the primer or just apply the primer on top of the paint? that the only question I got before I try my first swirl.

    • @bigdguitars
      @bigdguitars  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I built this body. But if you have a body made already you need to scuff it up so that the paint sticks. So hit it with something like 240 grit sand paper and then prime it. It will be ready to dip then.

    • @maniactre
      @maniactre 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** it may sound dumb but if my guitar paint is matte, do I still sand it or I can just apply the primer ?

    If I'm honest, I'm not a big fan of the visual effect. However, I would love to see something with just 2 colours that are slightly different shades of one another. I'm currently doing a Goldtop myself, and I ended up, quite by accident with a neat effect when I cleaned the gold paint to ready it for clear. Must have burned through it a bit with the lighter fluid or something. Anyway...some sort of really subtle reaction took place and I managed to seal it with clear. I immediately thought of you and wondered if this would work, a little more deliberately with a single colour in 2 different shades? Nice work btw:-)

    Is there any way to do this without borax? I was going to go pick some up, but apparently it´s illegal to buy here in Sweden..

    • @dougmcmillan2483
      @dougmcmillan2483 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      borax is for softening the water but it is also used as a detergent booster, depending on your water quality you may not need it, a drop of detergent to make the paint flow on the surface may be enough

  • @georgelackey622
    @georgelackey622 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The pipettes don't leave enough paint on the water. A large dropper or just pour the paint works way better.

    Does it have to be Humbrol paints or any Enamel paint will do the work?

  • @PeterAbud
    @PeterAbud 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Moving it side to side creates a forced curvy pattern. Spinning the guitar one way around while dipping it into the water creates a smoother finish.

    • @Stewicidal11
      @Stewicidal11 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you elaborate on spinning? Trying to figure out best way to do this for my build

    • @PeterAbud
      @PeterAbud 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stewicidal11 I meant to say rotate it on his own Z axis while you dip it, like the rotation of the Earth is always following one way, so you end up with a spiral finish instead of this edgy curves. Like peeling an apple with a knife from a single cut, it follows the same movement I was talking about.
      That being said, I was really into the swirl finish until I decided to go all solid white and I liked it more. It's timeless and swirls are like trendy, and trends tend to die. You will end up bored of it sooner than later, at least that hapenned to me and I'm happy with my all white custom guitar.
