    Cool dip, I plan on doing this with my Ibanez RG soon. At first I thought the paint didn't stick to the bottom sections, then I seen from you dip that you went through a huge section of white in the dip at the bottom.

    I tried My first Hydro dip on old Peavey Foundation Bass. Gray base coat. Used Majic Marble paints and, well needless to say, Back to the drawing board. Didn't get full coverage and the magic marble bubbled. Any suggestions? Did bubbling occur due to water temp?

I've read from another comment that hard water may get in the way of things. I really am hoping to finish the bass I am working on soon. Any and all help is appreciated

    Idk.... I actually like exactly how it turned out, red & all. I should say, ESP the red "blotches" as you called 'em. If it had been all perfectly marbled, doesn't give it any... originality- nothing would stand out. Those red bits.... the thicker blue lines... not being all uniformly red, blue, white from one end to the other..... imho is what makes this piece so great. I'm sure whomever it was being made for- was very happy with the outcome. Boring & same/same... can be replicated by anyone.... Something artistic on the other hand, something unique & not like every other... well, that's what they call a one-of-a-kind show-piece, my friend... beautiful work, nicely done! :) Thanks for sharing!

    That shaking the water off at the end might have been what made the paint bust open a little bit. I mean like how the red blotches ended up running out some. I think they made it look neat though.

    you need to use warm water (78 degrees) , some humbrol enamel paint, and some borax . once it dries finish it off with a few clear coats. Then wet sand it with a few different grits. coarse, medium courseness to a fine wet sandpaper. It would have turned out alot better then it did

      The water doesn’t negatively affect the texture it’s smooth regardless, only thing that makes the texture uneven is areas of paint that are too thick tend to make globs off paint which can cause it to need sanding once dried

    I really like how this type of painting looks on a guitar - but Ive tried it 3 separate times and it never works. I even used regular marbling paints and with no luck. Everyone says warm water and Borax but you just showed it can be done in cold with no borax. Why do you think it works sometimes and does not other times? The 3 times I tried it, 1 time the paint never dried. 2 It all blended and did not marble well at all. and the 3rd time It finally marbled nice and then dried nice, but then I took 400 grit sand paper and lightly sanded it but the paint came right off.

    • @andrewmiller974
      @andrewmiller974 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason the paint came off is because u didn't lock the paint down before sanding. After the paint dries completely may take over night. u spray 1 coat of gloss lacquer and after it dries using water as a lubricant take 600 grit sand paper to sand it. u need to do this 3 times. afterwards use some good wax like Meghiers to buff it to a nice shine. dont use an electric sander it will destroy it. cut sand paper sheet into 4ths fold it in half sand with that and watch the edges they will burn easily from the sand paper. be very gentle when sanding. good luck

    Also, I would like to try this, but with a small change in order, it is:
    1- Put the guitar completely into the bucket , before adding the paint and before swirling it.
    2- I think you would have more control over the pattern laid out onto the guitar body,
    without an accidental slip of the hand.
    Just a thought.
    Great job, thanks for sharing !

    • @LJPV777
      @LJPV777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gregsbest You probably wouldn't want a wooden guitar body sitting under water for any longer than it needs to be. If the paint is applied after the guitar is in there it seems like a decent amount of it sitting in the middle would end up on whatever handle you're using, also breaking the pattern up.

    • @gregsbest

      Yes, good point. Tx. for that.-g

    • @adamsaquatics3332
      @adamsaquatics3332 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gregsbest it wont work at all, you would be getting the guitar wet, and then trying to add oil based paints over the top of a water coated item, the paints will run right off of the quitar when you pull it out and it will look exactly the same as when you put it in.........what you may be going for is an acrylic style of painting, which can be done close to the same way but its not sharp and is very runny

    I need some advice if you don't mind. I just tried several dips with the Testorr enamels, metallic colors. I don't have a tank heater (yet) but I used a thermometer to get the closest tap water I could. I did use the specified ratio of Borax.
    all I would get is a clear "skin" that wouldn't let the paint spread. Trying to get the skin off only resulted in pulling all of the paint into one big colorful snot ball.
    is there one or more things that I am doing wrong? If you would give some advice I'd be most grateful.

      ***** My best friend and I just swirled a guitar each recently. They came out awesome except for a couple of blotches that need to be sanded and a few places where the paint didn't cover (I'd say we got about 97% coverage). I'm hoping that my buddy (who was given the nickname "MacGyver" when we played in a band together back in 2000) can sand out the blotches successfully so that we can clear coat them next week. He says it's a little dicey so if not, we may have to do them over which would suck, but at least we know we can get pretty consistent results in terms of coverage and colors popping.
      If my bud can tweak them successfully this weekend, we're gonna go see his ex-employer this upcoming week and clear coat both gtrs at the guy's body shop. We did a little research - we couldn't get any clear coat out of the can to dry completely in a few weeks time (don't remember all that we used but I know we tried a couple of cans of polyurethane). It would be almost dry on some test pieces after 2 or 3 weeks, but if you dug your nail in it would leave a little impression. My friend read that sometimes clear finishes out of a spray can will take up to a year to dry completely, if ever!
      So, we decided to go with an automotive 2k clear coat with hardener (Richard at Peachtree Global, who make the Magic Marble paints that we used, recommended the 2k). You have to wear protective gear to use it because when the clear and hardener are combined it becomes very toxic. It dries really fast though, like in a day or two I think my friend said (don't quote me cause I'm a two-left-thumb kinda guy). I guess you could get away with using clear out a spray can, but you'd have to be a little careful not to seriously ding it. Maybe there is clear out of a can that dries completely in a relatively short amount of time but we couldn't find any.
      I did my guitar in metallic violet, magenta, light blue and silver glitter. My bud did his in black and green with a touch of violet. The Magic Marble paints that we went with are specifically made for swirling - no Borax needed. I think enamels are probably a bit cheaper than the MM, but we never swirled before and wanted to make the process as failsafe as possible. We did a couple of tries with enamels and borax and couldn't make it work. You can also go with acrylics and carrageenan, but I'm not sure what the big guys like Out of this Swirled and Mr. Dean use, and I don't think they're telling.
      So, good luck with the swirls. Once my friend and I complete our first guitars, we will post them on TH-cam. We're already thinking about a second gtr each to swirl.

    • @smedleybutlerjr.1877
      @smedleybutlerjr.1877 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Just one more thought: some guys on You Tube say that you have to sand your gtr done to bare wood. According to my buddy and someone else here, you should absolutely not do that. Only sand away the clear coat and make sure that the colored coat underneath is rough enough so that the primer can adhere (the colored finish should kinda look like a matte finish - no sheen to it after you sand). Not sure if it would be the same for a guitar with just a clear on it like with a natural finish.
      Apparently, when gtrs are painted at the factory, a sealant is first sprayed on the body and neck to insure that no moisture gets into the wood. If you sand to bare wood past the sealant, you're asking for potential trouble, apparently.

      I believe Mr. Dean is using HUMBROL paint. I have heard he uses a mix of one third to one half paint thinner. Not sure about the thinner, but the best seem to be using Humbrol from what little info people are willing to let out. Hope that helps! if so, please write back and let me know. Happy swirling!

      The theory is tone. Using a filler for some guitar Geeks suggest that it messes with the tone and also using too much gloss can mess with the tone as well in theory. And perhaps Through time the filler may loosen and cause unwanted beauty marks. That's what I'm thinking why he refuses to use filler.

      +Kenny Prescott what type of paint? it sounds like you used a water base. a lot of enamel paint is still water based, you have to make sure that it is oil based. also, if the paint is too thick it can run together but not as bad as you describe, so if it is oil based thin it out with ENAMEL THINNER, not any old thinner

    borax, warmer water and your angle being a bit more would have made it perfect. The purple colors in the water would make an awesome swirl

    I came across one of these testors dipping videos that said to use 50/50 thinner paint but it was a disaster ended up looking like wood grain it was far too thin Used borax at 80 fail attempt one.

      DragonRoLo I found (in my quest to swirl a guitar, that I had to redo a few times) that the hardness of your water (how much mineral content ect) had a huge role to play. My water was too hard for Humbrol, or testors, the borax wouldn't break the surface tension evenly. I went to great lengths to get the ideal water temp (used a fish tank heather) and nothing worked, just because of the hard water. The way I ended up getting it to work was with Magic Marble paints. It is already thinned and ready for application to water, then the surface you wish to marble (same steps, lay paint on water, dip, remove excess paint around edges, remove, dry). This has been my "go to" way since.

    I don't understand how yours was so successful. I have been using the testors paint method with borax in the water and I end up with air bubbles in the paint and also it runs. when I tried just using testors without thinning it out the paint just clumps up and doesn't swirl. I will keep trying till I get it right though.

      make sure the paint is newer. also use the droppers it makes a huge difference. less paint is better than too much paint

    • @bigdguitars
      @bigdguitars  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you have the guitar primed? is the paint floating or sinking? what is the water temp. Have you tested on scrap?

    • @davecochran
      @davecochran 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I tested on scrap. It was also primed. I tried it thinned, I tried it straight from the bottle, with borax (room temp), without borax (cold from sink)....but I cant get it to stick. The only luck I had was non-thinned oil based enamel and water with borax, but it was extremely runny.

    HEY BIG D, WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU ARE AGAINST GRAIN FILLER? HAHA I KNOW IT'S A PAIN IN THE BUTT, BUT IF YOU WANT THAT SMOOTH FINISH AND DON'T LIKE WAISTING MATERIALS THERE IS NO WAY AROUND IT. I WILL AY THOUGH I HATE TIMBERMATE, EVERY CLAME THEY MAKE IS FALSE, YOU PUT THAT STUFF ON AND BECAUSE IT'S WATER BASED IT JUST FALLS RIGHT OUT WHEN YOU WIPE IT DOWN AFTER LEVEL SANDING.

    You overdo the white color bro. You should put it just a little cause the base color of your guitar is already white. Where's the red color? :D Maybe you should put first the colors by dripping it carefully not while dripping your making it swirl already. You can do that after you put all the colors to make a nicer swirl. Just sayin bro. :)
