I'm pretty sure engineering firms CEOs have been in the field for a little. You can't really own a rocket company without knowing about rockets. I guess unless youre Elon. He just has money
@@MrQuackcorn yeah when its about profit making it ruins the end product and MBA vultures are only there to make more profits and bonuses they will deteriorate the quality of the product, they are taught to manipulate as much as they can to profit as much as they can. whereas an engineer will go for the quality of the product making it more refined day by day as is evident in the history of Boeing.

I believe Tory Bruno just meant any lack of knowledge, even that which in inherent in any real-life situation. With that definition I would like for you to point to a reason for a safety margin that doesn't ultimately boil down to ignorance.
I am just blown away by a CEO that knows the intricacies of his product to the very core, no "umm", "I'll get the SME to answer that" or the classic, 'i'll get back to ya on that", amazing.

@@DayFour2019 I'm sure this comment was at least partly in jest but you really should care when lifting. It always happens to someone else until it happens to you and there's nothing worse than knowing an injury or death is the result of nothing more than laziness.
Also, his excitement level seems to indicate there was lots more he _wanted_ to tell us. It's totally understandable that there are things he can't show and tell, though, what with all the recent competition in the space launch market.
Me before watching: “How in the heck did people build that rocket?” Me after watching: “How in the heck did they build the tools used to build that rocket?” I did a few videos from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum last summer. It never ceases to amaze me to look at the tools that men have built to accomplish the things that we have done.
Well, he's an engineer himself so he's supposed to know all of that. I'm also sure he brushed up on everything before Destin came so he would be able to explain everything smoothly as he did in the video.
@@geethsan1567 You could easily tell a specialist for stress and strain, he ran a ton of FEA himself and also studied his materials. Over the years you know your processes, but nice to see there are people like this in the US and not only hillbillies on meth with big guns.
Diagrams and illustrative animations are nice to have if well used, but I'm with you on the rest. This was an excellent video - really wish there was more!
Every company needs a CEO like this. The guy is so cool, and humble, and actually knowledgeable about everything going on. You can tell hes not just a million dollar baby. He has a really passion for what he does. So freaking cool.
I was introduced to those types of large CNCs at the LTV Jefferson facility in Grand Prairie, TX. They cut the wing for the G5 and Horizontal Stabilizers.

Wow! You can hear the emotion in his voice when he talks about the payload being people as opposed to hardware. Having the payload come in and shake hands with the people that are building their rocket. Phenomenal. He really cares about who he is sending up into space.
I was just about to comment on that myself. I've never thought about that, that the person flying into space can actually come and watch "their rocket" being built and meet the people building it. That's just so cool and emotional.
Ofc he does, everyone that's actually part of the space program LOVES everything they do... It's only douchebags throwing money at them when they desperately need it because of cut funding that even allows idiots with no cares about it to get to space.
I work in a metal fab shop as an engineering designer, and I guarantee our CEO would not be able to answer these kinds of highly technical engineering questions. Absolutely amazing.
@@voornaam3191 Because there's more to a business than just the technical details. Being able to surround yourself with reliable people who know these things is more valuable for a CEO who works at a more macro level. It's like a manager. A manager doesn't necessary need to know all the detail of the job his team does. His primary job is to manage humans and it requires its own set of skills. Of course it depends what job it is. Some management job requires more expertise than others. I've seen quite a few expert pushed to a management position and ending up being absolutely terrible at it and the opposite, managers who knows only the subjet superficially but doing a fantastic job as manager. A CEO's primary missions are strategy and organisation. In some field a technical knowledge (not expertise) is important for the strategy aspect but it's mostly true for very technical field like rockets.
Tory Bruno is quite active on Twitter, Reddit, and even on the /r/spacex subreddit despite being a competitor to them. Goes to show he is really into all things rocketry
I've watched this video probably 3 or 4 times in the last 3 years and I always catch something new. The pride in Tory's face and voice at 26:17 (and that whole segment) when he's talking about how that process will always be done by hand, by real people, because they can do it better than any computer ever could, is so infectious.

@@RonnyScotVanDerVeen Yep, i work as a process metallurgist for a company that does about 70% aerospace work and can confirm this is true, they just don't let unqualified people in higher management, there are literal lives on the line.
I'd say it's why they're still in business. If a boss running this kind of operation didn't comprehend the value of every step they'd cut corners and make a garbage product. I see it all the time in consumer companies lol.

I have a question at 33:11. The friction stir welding seems to only weld the surfaces. How is the strength accounted for if the bulk does not get welded?
@@Shenron557 He seemed to imply that the warmed up aluminum gets pushed down into the crack, welding the 2 pcs together, I was thinking the same thing tho and could be totally wrong.
@@knight2255 I don't think that's the case. The CEO explicitly states that the aluminum doesn't melt. And without melting I can't think of a way for the metal to flow between the gap.
There is such a thing as a collective you. Grammatically, that is how the sentence structure should go. Dustin says "You" as the collective whole of the company as an outsider, Tory says "we" as the collective whole of the company that the CEO is also part of.
It's so refreshing to see a CEO of a company that actually knows what they're making. Not only does he know but is highly educated. I hope he has children who are as smart as he is.
What an impressive tour and brilliant technical interview! This CEO is so full of passion and expertise and so capable of explaining things in human language; he should have his own TV show. Also my compliments to Destin who has the technical level to ask all the relevant questions. It's been a pleasure to watch a balanced conversation between two people who actually listen to each other and are both so well-versed.
That is what I love the most about this channel. Destin is so passionate about all of these topics and it is truly a joy to watch him talk with other passionate professionals. Hearing them speak to each other and being able to learn from all of it is simply beautiful and amazing! And that goes to all of his videos and the professionals he speaks with.
It results amazing to know that an aluminum panel like these, will never be done by any machine but by humans to get the right curvature. A critical operation made by hand right in 21st century. Amazing indeed. I've never thought of such CNC process to achieve weight reduction and yet, mechanical conditions required to flight into space. Real pieces of work! Magnificent video Dustin.
I had absolutely no idea until you said something that it wasn't longer than maybe 20 minutes. The CEO is so impressive. When I think CEO I think of stuffy money making vacation taking people, but this man changed my whole perspective. He's happy to be there, happy to do what he loves, and happy to answer any question to flex that knowledge. That's incredible.

Spend ten minutes on a freight loading dock of the crappiest box store in the lowest area in your area and you will find an ocean of people with more skill talent and character. Anyone who has spent five minutes getting to know ANY operation top to bottom and bottom to top knows that a guy like this is extremely rare. Failing upwards, brain fog robots are by far the norm. That entire "wide range" is a constant source of poor infliction on the people who execute executive ideas almost always. You are seriously dreaming of you think even 1 out of 10 CEOs in the globe could even work on the line at the place this guy runs let alone are his peers. Money idea financial blob management isn't the same as directing a rocket program. Absolutely asleep and dreaming mate.

Absolutely fascinating very well done. My son works for ULA, and I've always bugged him about giving me a tour which obviously he can't due to security issues, so what better way to accomplish this than have the president give us a personal tour. Thank you both very much !!!

And he didnt pass out, now bear in mind that they do not wear such a suit like these fighter pilots do, if you ask me, it's quite incredible. Thank you very much. I am not a professional engineer, but I have always been a gear head and found this fascinating. The CEO is really great for allowing the whole tour and explaining everything. The machinery for manufacturing the parts was amazing.
Q: "How are the rocket panels made?" A: "They're the product of decades of advancement in analytical tools for finite element analysis and completely custom production and tooling" Q: "Cool! So how do you connect them so the rocket can withstand the forces of being launched into space?" A: "Oh, yeah, we just stick them together and rub them in a special way."
AvE made some videos several years ago where he toyed around with friction stir welding. I took a break in the middle of this video and checked them out, before coming back to finish this one.
ClokworkGremlin I was wondering when we briefly saw the edge of that weld - so the friction welds mush the outer and inner part...so there’s a little hole in the middle that still has air? Man, this stuff is so cool.
This young man reminds me of the many times I took my kids to the toy store. Big mistake on my part but they thoroughly enjoyed it till it was time to leave. What is really amazing is in spite of the immense knowledge of Mr. Tory Bruno the CEO, and his busy schedule, he explains everything with such enthusiasm, and never missed a moment to wave or say hi to passing employees. Soon to be 72, but still a huge fan of space exploration. Great video. Much Appreciated.

It is very refreshing to see how excited this makes you even talking about it, let alone when you got to see it in person. The casual conversations between you and Tory were incredible. My dad worked there as a friction stir welder (the vertical welder). I went there one day with him on a “take your kid to work day”. They were building the first Delta 4 Heavy. My entire family works in the Space industry. My mom worked for Lockheed Martin, my uncle worked for N.A.S.A., my aunt worked on the lenses for the Hubble Telescope. All of them worked in Huntsville & Decatur.

The CEO is like the Mr Roger's of rocket building. You can tell he is passionate about the work they do, he is not detached from the process and knows his team. He is explaining and teaching as he shows the factory its not just a PR show. Very cool.

I love how he gives every bit of credit to the "people" aspect of the production process. He's the type of boss that I aspire to be. I hope my guys see me that way. I couldn't do it without them!
The amount of respect that Tory has for his employees is amazing. The tone of his voice completely changes when he's talking about the skill of the workers and how "you'll never get better results doing this with computers" and it's pleasantly surprising.

Wow! You can hear the emotion in his voice when he talks about the payload being people as opposed to hardware. Having the payload come in and shake hands with the people that are building their rocket. Phenomenal. He really cares about who he is sending up into space.
I was just about to comment on that myself. I've never thought about that, that the person flying into space can actually come and watch "their rocket" being built and meet the people building it. That's just so cool and emotional.

Being able to surround yourself with reliable people who know these things is more valuable for a CEO who works at a more macro level. It's like a manager. A manager doesn't necessary need to know all the detail of the job his team does. His primary job is to manage humans and it requires its own set of skills. Of course it depends what job it is. Some management job requires more expertise than others. I've seen quite a few expert pushed to a management position and ending up being absolutely terrible at it and the opposite, managers who knows only the subjet superficially but doing a fantastic job as manager. A CEO's primary missions are strategy and organisation. In some field a technical knowledge (not expertise) is important for the strategy aspect but it's mostly true for very technical field like rockets.
There is no question why that guy is the CEO of this company. The guy knew his stuff and was well spoken. Very inspiring.

I've watched this video probably 3 or 4 times in the last 3 years and I always catch something new. The pride in Tory's face and voice at 26:17 (and that whole segment) when he's talking about how that process will always be done by hand, by real people, because they can do it better than any computer ever could, is so infectious.

I'd say it's why they're still in business. If a boss running this kind of operation didn't comprehend the value of every step they'd cut corners and make a garbage product. I see it all the time in consumer companies lol.

I have a question at 33:11. The friction stir welding seems to only weld the surfaces. How is the strength accounted for if the bulk does not get welded?

That is what I love the most about this channel. Destin is so passionate about all of these topics and it is truly a joy to watch him talk with other passionate professionals. It results amazing to know that an aluminum panel like these, will never be done by any machine but by humans to get the right curvature. A critical operation made by hand right in 21st century. Amazing indeed. I've never thought of such CNC process to achieve weight reduction and yet, mechanical conditions required to flight into space. Real pieces of work! Magnificent video Dustin.

I had absolutely no idea until you said something that it wasn't longer than maybe 20 minutes. The CEO is so impressive. When I think CEO I think of stuffy money making vacation taking people, but this man changed my whole perspective. My dad worked there as a friction stir welder (the vertical welder). I went there one day with him on a “take your kid to work day”. They were building the first Delta 4 Heavy. My entire family works in the Space industry. My mom worked for Lockheed Martin, my uncle worked for N.A.S.A., my aunt worked on the lenses for the Hubble Telescope. All of them worked in Huntsville & Decatur.

The CEO is like the Mr Roger's of rocket building. You can tell he is passionate about the work they do, he is not detached from the process and knows his team. He is explaining and teaching as he shows the factory its not just a PR show. Very cool.

That was the fastest 54 minutes and 16 seconds that I can remember!! This was an absolutely fascinating video!! Not too many CEOs can talk in detail about their company. They are just stock boosters. Mr. Bruno knows his product inside and out from raw materials to the finished product. Thank you for posting this incredible video of something I always wanted to see!!! As a machinist, I find it incredible how they can hold tolerances on something that huge! The friction welding answered one of my big questions! Cool to watch Mr. Bruno and Destin geek out when they started talking about the science of it all!!

I love how he gives every bit of credit to the "people" aspect of the production process. He's the type of boss that I aspire to be. I hope my guys see me that way. I couldn't do it without them!

The amount of respect that Tory has for his employees is amazing. The tone of his voice completely changes when he's talking about the skill of the workers and how "you'll never get better results doing this with computers" and it's pleasantly surprising.
It's always good when engineers are CEO instead of those business school guys
They are important too, but yeah... Better to have an engineer in charge of a tech company.
