Art and Industry Make Magic in a Pittsburgh Loft

Artists Atticus Adams and Garry Pyles’ two-story live-work loft in the formerly industrial Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh was once a defunct, boarded-up light-metal manufacturing facility. It’s part of two buildings, one built in 1868 and the other in 1950. When Adams and Pyles bought the buildings, both were filled with five decades’ worth of stuff, everything from repurposed furniture to metal presses. It took 18 months - and many, many dumpsters - for the homeowners to empty it all. Here’s what they did next.

I love this place - the repurposing, the light, the art, the gentlemen who occupy it. Incredible.
Being native to Pittsburgh I remember the tight doorways, dormers and stairwells that make it impossible to bring any large furniture pieces into older homes and buildings. When I left in 2008, Lawrenceville was beginning to realize it's potential in embracing industrial living. You guys have done a fabulous job in your loft. The art and craftmanship that you display is so amazing,
"I love to give new life to old things." I adore that statement. 🍷
This is stunning. I so admire that creative spark some people have to see one object and envision a whole other life for it as something else. Repurposing is something I'm not great at, but when I see projects like this I'm determined to get better at it. Awesome home for awesome people :)
WOW WOW WOW. Talk about a dream space! How lucky were they to find a space that was so full of amazing surprises! And Atticus' art is so interesting too. So envious!

Wow! That home are full of characters. It's so nice to see old things bring back to new life, plus repurposing and recycling helps mother Earth and saves you a lot of money.

Its always the most artistic people that see the real beauty in material that has a history instead of just creating a slick minimalists cube - also this kinda thinking is much better for the planet.

I love it! Repurposing or reusing things in different areas of my home makes me feel like I just got the stuff. It creates a whole new vibe. Your place is wonderful and your studio is fabulous with its billowy art work.

They know how to turn a bland, open industrial look into highly distinct functional areas creatively, so the areas flow seamlessly and so tastefully. It's wonderful to have your creations all around you. For us, it was modern farm house with handcrafted Shaker furniture and quilts. Your home is YOU. And, it's very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I love visiting Pittsburgh and I love this loft! I wonder what area it is in? I looks like the art district but I’m not sure. I’m renovating my old (new to me) mid-century house. I was also left with tons of stuff to clean out (took us a month to do- but found lots of cool stuff, including the original blueprints of the home). It so nice to see people repurpose old things in a thoughtful way. Very inspiring!

Natural light is amazing in any space, especially as light and shadow add so much interest to spaces in a home.
Always wanted a big loft, but I rarely see interior design that feels unified in any way. It certainly has the feeling of something that has grown or evolved over time... and that's a wonderful thing, for something to feel 'lived in'. And yet, it also takes on the energy of a thrift store rather than a home, because of all the disparate styles. Seems like Atticus and Garry love their space, and I admire their commitment both to their neighborhood... as well as loft living. It's not for everyone, but they're doing it well.

I like this space very much! Well thought out yet feels creative versus too pristine!! So many people believe that they cannot create but creation is not scientific it is simply looking at something and studying the form once you understand the method you can create and make almost anything! You also have to have a love for creativity and understand the process should not become a task on a checklist but an experience that can push your abilities to the next level and so on!! I enjoy figuring out how to achieve a desired goal as it relates to a space or specific piece! I thank you both for sharing your beautiful home and your point of view on design! I hope your space continues to bring you both creative awareness and most of all joy!

1:10 there’s a scene in Absolutely Fabulous that shows exactly what he described about taking a while to get to the front door. In the series it’s a downtown London high end designer store though, as OPEN as this house; the designer and his assistant have quite of funny exchange because the front entrance is too far to see who are the customers..

This is ALCHEMY in work.Any house without some exclusive art is dead IMHO. Cultivation comes from word culture, not to make your home to museum or exhibition, but organically incorporate it. This way any small detail , especially light on those magic pieces make juices of the body going and produce constant flow of new energy. It is rich not because of money but because of magic of what refined mind and taste can do. I can bet that fabrication of each piece is of the highest quality and that they lived in many places of the world before they made their choice - this way it became quintessentially masculine in the best meaning of this word. This is my favorite house of all I saw aside of Freud's house in Vienna.
