Why is there such a big difference The ISS is crowded, but the CSS is like an Apple store

  • In October 2021, a report on the US Futurism website claimed that the interior design of China's space station looks like an "Apple Store", and it puts the International Space Station to shame. The orbital lab boasts a number of tools and designs that set it apart from the ISS, which is fairly old and slated to be retired within the next decade. Not only does Tiangong have spacious bunks for its astronauts, but it also has a sleek space gym and separate living spaces for each crewmember - with a minimalist white interior design that looks more like an Apple store than a cramped space habitat.
Compare that to the ISS, which looks downright obsolete in comparison. In fact, not only the media, but even Scott Kelly, an astronaut who once worked on the International Space Station, expressed his envy for the spacious and tidy environment inside the China Space Station. The ISS’s sleeping quarters are roughly the size of a phone booth, paling in comparison to Tiangong's beds. In fact, it’s so cramped that astronauts are sometimes forced to "sleep kind of together, wherever," NASA astronaut Scott Kelly said.
On top of that is the ISS's- shall we say- cluttered interior design. Much of its space is filled with a hodgepodge of wires, computers, and miscellaneous hardware together. So why does the International Space Station look so "dirty and crowded"? Why is there such a big contrast between the two? Hi. Welcome to Hot Topics Time, and let’s move on to today’s topic.

most of the video explaination are just minor nitpick. there are 2 main reason of the CSS looking clean. first is cable management and standardization, power and datalink for each rack were preplanned and build into the housing, with power and datalink being standardized commercially in the last decade, it easy to implement wifi, ethernet, USB, liquid cooling and power. the rack size is also standardized that you can pull an experimental rack from ESA's ISS lab and stick it in CSS and it would fit. the 2nd is ISS is design to be carry by proton and shuttle which force the station to be design to fit within those confine spaces. in contrast the long march 5 use a wide fairing, allowing them to attach alot of the machinery to the outside of the station instead of mounting them internally, this remove alot of bump in the interior space.

As somebody who researches space quite extensively I'd like to provide my input: The reason the Chinese space station, which is named Tiangong, looks so clean is because it's brand new. The ISS has been in orbit since 1998, and the reason it's so messy is the same reason any living space will look messy after 25 years, not just a space station. Tiangong looks so clean because it was launched (at the time of writing) only two years ago, and hasn't had enough time to allow the walls to turn into storage on a scale that the ISS has. When the ISS was launched, the interior looked very similar to what we see inside Tiangong now, so there's actually not such a big difference between the two space stations if you account for their age. A more fair comparison would be what the ISS looked like 2 years into construction vs modern day Tiangong.

Well it's like looking at apples and pears! Both fruit but different! If I had to choose between them both. I would choose the Chinese one! It might be small but it's modern clean, and well designed, no one does any maintenance on the iss, the usa has pissed off every body, even the russans. Who don't want to work with the usa any more. They are now looking at joining china, what a team that would make. they both like working out side the box the usa has lost all respect it had! The only one in the west is musk who gets things done! But his work is so much restricted by goverment rules and idiots sitting on the side lines who have no idea what they are doing. And using rules that are so far out of date. ,it's not funny any more! So if china and russar can format a new team, go for it! Love to see how far you can go and what you can achieve! You certainly don't need the usa or their attitude and rules!

The key technology to make appearance clean is infrastructure for instruments. (1) Communication: Old equipment was designed with physical wiring to pass data back and forth. New equipment can use wireless communication with very low latency and higher bandwidth which China excels (i.e. 5G). (2) Once the communication issue is solved, the only requirement for instruments is power. New equipment need less power. So, a standardised power input (say 24V DC) could be just sufficient. (3) Human interface: All key boards and mice are replaced with touch screen or voice commands. VR headset can be used anywhere to monitor experiments. I think the explanation of multiple culture and nations is just garbage.

Stupid comparison. Once you load the station up with scientific equipment it gets messy real quick. Aesthetics are the last thing you care about when you have a lab in space. Exposed wiring for experiments is also easier as you can quickly disconnect and reroute data cables on the fly. What matters is the results in research and analytics not "how pretty it looks" this isnt a 5 star space hotel.

This AI voice took a leap from at first just saying that the ISS was crowded to also being dirty without any visual indication that was the case. And the extremely subjective statement that the ISS looks "messy" because of the different modules were built by different countries. Again there is no visual evidence of this point offered.
To me the video was not well written, edited and the narrative was repetitive. I can often ignore an AI voice in a video, but this one is too awkward to listen to.

Simple: one is new, the other is OLD. The new learned from the mistakes made by the old other.
Just like early automobiles that were basic raw tin cans with no interiors (Ford Model T) compared to the sleek vehicles of today that are so comfortable and spacious that one can camp and sleep in them, the ISS is old and fast headed into obsolescence, but still held together today, "MacGyver styled" with string, duct (gaffer) tape, and a prayer compared to the Chinse CSS designed and planned for human habitation for long periods of time.
The ISS was conceived to compete against the Russian (USSR) MIR space station but using an international alliance in order to build a large space station platform bigger than anything the Russians had. It was certainly better than the Russians MIR. However, like one would cross a river by the stepping stones, China has now stepped forward into the lead because, the U.S. in its paranoic wisdom decided to keep the "odd-ball kid" out of the "International" tree top club house hobbled together from pieces of planks from the grocery store apple crate.
It failed to realize that the funny-looking kid that it doesn't like, has the money and the talent pool to build his own mansion-sized club house complete with running hot water and toilet facilities - and has now invited the true international science consortium to join it - without charging them a "builder's fee".
IF the U.S. is really concerned about the CSS being now more advanced than their ISS, it would commission a new ISS which would undoubtedly be better than the CSS again, to be launched. Perhaps we may have even be able to see a space station similar to that in "2001 - A Space Odyssey". It may even make a new ISS truly INTERNATIONAL with NO POLITICS involved and one that is truly aimed at gaining SCIENTIFIC knowledge for the whole world to enjoy the benefits from.
However, alas - it is not to be.
The U.S. has no money available for that sort of a plan any longer (if it could even afford to have one), having spent (wasted and squandered away) their billions and trillions into their obese military and in wars and can't even look after their own people who are growing in homelessness.
    So, here we are.
