  • Not long ago we tested the Ontario MK III knife and where dissapointed. This week we test the TRC Mille Cuori. A knife used by various militairy forces in northern Europe and guess what..... this might be one of the best militairy knives we have ever tested. This knife is not only fit for combat but would also make a great partner on your camping trips. In our opinion camping tasks will be 99% of the usage a militairy knife gets but it needs to be reliable enough to depend your life on it and in dire situations it needs to be fit for combat. This knife does it all! Find out in this amazing new episode!

    Lol, after nearly 6 years in the Infantry, the #1 use my knife found was opening MRE's, after that it's cutting 100mph tape/550 cord, I never once started a single fire, built a single shelter, stabbed anything but wood, or got anywhere near camping in a conventional sense, your shelter if you had one was a ranger grave scratched out with your entrenching tool, warmth/light came from clothing or sleep system, modern battlefields move too fast and are too dynamic for such things, these skills are definitely worth learning in the event you become separated and lost, or in a SERE scenario, but there is no field of use for them in daily life on deployment

      That's exactly why most military knives , except special forces, don't need to be full tang, don't have crazy edges or all the stuff seen here. It has to have a good edge, be strong enough, and have a sharp point in case it's used to end a life, that's it. Bayonets are the best military blade ever made.

      @retardno002 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@beentheredonethat5908 let's not forget that they need to be cost effective, masse produced, and widely available. You can't equip a whole army with $400 blades made by some craftsman in Lithuania that are almost always sold out.

      @@Robinson.69 Hi there!! Do you mean the latest version of Carothers Fighting knife? If you speak about that knife, unfortunately it's a custom knife made in the USA, those knives are difficult for us to get, here in South Europe. It's a VERY durable knife, with special heat treatment. That being said, I'm not a huge fun of CPM 3V. There are other steels, that I would choose such a knife, like Vanadis 4 Extra. or even Ballbearing steel.. Both those steels, have way more edge retention and instead of needing more time to sharpen, they sharpen faster than 3V. They also have better edge stability than 3V (won't take microchips on the edge) Carothers heat treatment, eliminates that chance, but you still get 3V steel properties. It's a very good knife, but at that category, I would choose Survive knives GSO 4.7 or TRC Mille Cuori (both are way better knives.)

  • @StevanOutdoor
    @StevanOutdoor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    TRC knives are always very good but not the cheapest ones. There's always a conflict between a camping knife and a combat knife, but I agree the most use of a military knife is not fighting. They have guns for that.
    I remember when Hill knives got a contract to make a Commando knife for the Dutch Special Forces aka Green Berets. They made it 4 mm thick and because of the cost only one per group was issued. After testing the knife was bend so they had to make it in 5 mm thick steel.
    Military personal are not always, often not, knife people so they will do crazy stuff with it.
    And the price is always an issue.

    That Ontario knife is NOT issued to US Marines. It is issued to navy seal candidates for training in hand to hand combat in BUDS training. The USMC issues a knife based on the classic Kabar knife. Special Forces units don't have specific issue knives. That is left up to individual soldiers preference or unit preference. The US Army doesn't even issue a fixed blade knife. They issue the M9 bayonet. Which is despised by soldiers.
    As to how often soldiers use their knife in battle, in the Iraq war, there were fewer than a dozen enemy combatants killed with a knife.

    Military personnel carry a "field knife", largely out of tradition.
    The average soldier only uses his knife to open MREs and that is about it.
    They do NOT go camping, and meals are pre-prepared MRE's.
    Open fires give your position away, and no military issues out Ferro-rods to its soldiers, so scraping one is not a military concern.
    The only time food is not prepared in the field, is at a military field kitchen.
    The Bayonet charge is a historical rather than modern tactic in war.
    However, for Special Forces personnel, the knife is a weapon to kill silently at close quarters.
    Therefore, the point needs to be:
    a. A fighting point. Thin at the point yet strong, with the point near the centerline of the length of the blade,
    so the point does not rise at impact but rather goes straight in.
    b. It must be strong behind the point and able to penetrate thick cut resistant fabrics.
    c. It needs a strong and large finger guard, with a handle that is anti-slip so the soldier's hand never moves forward when stabbing.
    A thumb rise on the back would be good as well.
    d. The blade needs to be long enough to ensure, even if the blade does not go all the way in, it will go in deep enough to ensure a lethal wound.
    e. It needs to be a hard, durable steel that will not chip or crack, and hold its wedge, and it must be extremely corrosion resistant.

    • @mountainbearoutdoors
      @mountainbearoutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      valid points made, most of us just get by with a leatherman that can cut wire, fix minor mechanical issues with weapon systems and cut things with. I don't think knives go much beyond stabbing the enemy in which case a bayonet does fine. if you need something task specific it will get issued otherwise standard issue is designed to get you by. great fun video guys I always end up clicking on your latest uploads.

    Problem with issued equipment from the military is that it's usually the best quality for the best value or whoever provides the best value for the specs needed.

      Once you handle a TRC you realize where your money went. I'ved owned half a dozen TRC and currently own this one. It is difficult to find a better made knife. The sheath is even hand made.

      Strongarms blade geometry and edge finish, is some of the worse I have ever seen. Cheaper Chines knives I own, are better made than the Gerer Strongarm. However, the heat treatment on the 420hc version, is perfect. The overall package is not bad. If it didn't have the 2 issues I mentioned, it would come closer to a Ka-Bar but it just can't.

    First Edge makes the most epic military knives in ELMAX I have ever used. Models: 5050 and 5051

      Good joke.. Vannadis 4e is 10 times as tough as Elmax! The only place where Elmax is better is corrosion. First Egae has made the knives especially for use in Arctic climate

      Ok buddy I wasn't making a comparison just stating I own the First Edge 5050 in Elmax that is issued to the US NAVY seals for Arctic/Kodiak training. I watch tests from "The Knife Lab" (CedricandAda) I know the difference between steels and different heat treats that make steels special. Cheers

      Extrema Ratio makes awesome Military knives in N690 cobalt steel. They are cool too. Just not for the $$$

      Go check Wildsteer knives, they make way beter knives than First edge. Stainless Supersteels, is the last kind steel I would choose for a military knife. It's either carbon, or Tool steel, that is proper for that kind of knives.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @UCsaPvjpvcZFwjUJ_exzY48Q Elmax is a super stainless steel with low toughness and high edge retention. Any Superstainless steel is prone to chiping, no matter what marketing says. I speak from experience. I'm also an x-soldier and I've also a degree in metallurgy and in cemistry. I also love knives since child and I sharpen knives professionally for 2 decades. Marketing has made people think, that Elmax and other low toughness steels, are tough like tool steels or low carbon steels. Well, in reallity, it's the exact opposite. You have to put a very steap edge and have a perfect heat treatment, and still Elmax will chip more than any tool or alloy steel. Even a lot of carbon steels have better edge stability.
