      You guys are morons. A 883 sportster is a good beginner bike , AND a good end of life bike for us who will never ride a 3 wheeled BIG WHEEL. We downgrade to a sporty to stay on 2 wheels, because of bad knees, bad hips, lighter weight. I'm trading my Road Glide for a Sporty due to age and physical restrictions. So quit dissing a very good bike that has its place for many many people.

    As a sportster owner (which was also my first motorcycle), I was interested in the iron 883 for the reliability, huge aftermarket and service support network. I think I did partially buy into the brand mindset, after being pressure by my father with his boomer bagger, but I have been very happy with it. I have a bunch of biltwell parts and bassani exhaust. Never had any issues with it, and didn't care much for performance, just wanted to cruise around town. It was a great learning bike, and I plan to keep it for quite awhile. I can respect the scout bobber and would consider moving up to something that can better keep up on the highway, when I need to take longer trips.

      When it comes to suspension other marks also get hammered. Many people used to replace their BMW shocks but now days you can’t with all the computers.

    • @TheHaiku2
      @TheHaiku2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Where does this notion that an 883 can't keep up on the highway come from, these things literally just purr at 80mph, and there are videos to prove it. Also, the long trip fantasy is fubar. Look at how many big Harleys just wind up sitting in garages after the owner bought it because they bought into the 'big trip' fantasy, and got tired of lugging the thing around town because the big trip never manifested.

    The Harley Davidson sportster is a rare machine! Nothing else like it! Yamm acts like it’s a shock that the 883 is not built for performance minded riders? It’s a 30 yr old motorcycle! That’s it’s appeal! If you don’t want that, then buy something else? I’m a brand new rider, and the fact that I can get into a Harley Davidson that is rideable for noobs and looks freaking amazing! Is awesome! It’s KILLER! Yeah I said it. I freaking love my sporty 883! This garbage about it being almost unrideable because of the shocks and controls and feel and lean angle, is complete and total BULLSHIT. It’s extremely, extremely, rideable! Mine is bone freaking stock and it rides great. It doesn’t tear up the streets or pop wheelies or feel like a sport bike no, of course not. But unrideable? Whatever? Not even close! I ride mine all over, everyday, everywhere, and I have a freaking blast doing it!

    Here’s the thing with the sportster. It’s an amazing bike! Really! It’s a legitimate beginner bike that can also be something you keep your entire riding life. It’s iconic and nostalgic and all that. It’s one of the freaking coolest looking bikes on the road regardless of make or model. It’s a design that has been selling non stop since 1957! Non stop! The only reason it’s going away is emissions regulations. It can be retuned, retrofitted, revived, revised, and re-whatever into almost anything your mind can dream up! If you need more power from it, well you have multiple, multiple, options! Just how much power do you need it to make, because you can probably get it there in the aftermarket? There are kits to take it beyond 120+hp! Or maybe you just want to wake it up a little? Put a breather an exhaust and retune and enjoy. Or stick one of multiple different cams available for it in there and again, enjoy! Change the bars, change the seat, change the suspension, the wheels, the tank, the forks, whatever you want! To say the sportster is not a good motorcycle and that people who buy and ride them are wasting their money is ridiculous. Just shows a complete lack of imagination and foresight. Not everyone wants a stock machine that is exactly like every other bike that shares its name.

    I'm planning to jump into riding, because I always loved to look of the classic bikes and cafe racer type things. I'm a complete noob when it comes to bikes, but I love tinkering and repairing, I have been rebuilding one of my cars in the last 15 years, so I have learned a lot through the years. Let's say I'm not afraid of any task now. I've learnt a lot, remade complete wiring harness, rebuilt the 6 cylinder engine etc.
    I never was a fan of speeding through corners, cruising is what suits me best. So as a first bike the Sportster just ticks all the boxes and even more so after watching your review. Thanks!

  • @thefinaledge3554
    @thefinaledge3554 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So you have a "hard time making the case for the Sportster" when it comes to (ahem) *heritage* because you could buy another motorcycle that *looks* like an old school bike when it is actually a modern one? Gimme a break, Yammie. Let's make a quick comparison: would you say a classic Mustang has less *heritage* than a Honda because it is more expensive and slower than the more modern conventional car? Harleys are just like that: a vehicle that pays tribute to old, classic ways of riding. It's just silly to make that kind of comparison.

    • @thefinaledge3554
      @thefinaledge3554 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zealadinn putting value on a "REAL" classic vehicle is *totally* subjective. The car by itself is nowhere as good as a modern one, all of its value comes from subjective, historical factors that may or may not be deemed nice by people. If Ford started manufacturing the classic Mustang again, I'm sure there would be people who would buy it, as there are people who already buy replicas. Would it be a "REAL" classic vehicle? It doesn't really matter: people would buy it because of the *experience* of riding a classic, dated car -- which it *would* provide you. Everything considered, Harleys give you a similar taste of the "glory" of the old days. The ticket for thatt is indeed expensive, but there are still people who find it worthy. To sum it up: riding a Harley provides feelings that having a razor-sharp modern quick bike just can't. That's what Yammie is failing to undertand IMO.

    There are so many cliches and not entirely relevant things in this video it’s hard to know where to start. They are complicating the hell out of buying a bike. I may be wrong but you own a bike because of how it makes you feel. Not only when you ride it but just looking at it. It doesn’t matter what you do to your bike as long as it makes you happy doing it. I have 2 old Harleys, both 79’s. I owned my first one in 79 and it was a different time. A Harley didn’t make you cool and they weren’t a luxury item. Leathers didn’t make you a badass, they kept your badass intact in case you came off your bike. T shirts didn’t cost $35 and an accessory was something you bolted on your bike. The whole point of owning a Harley is because you liked riding it, same as any other bike. So you can watch all these videos and let someone tell you what’s right/wrong with a Harley or, you can go and ride one. If you buy a bike for any reason other than you really like riding it you probably bought the wrong bike. So go find a bike you like and get some saddle time, you’ll enjoy it. I like these 2 guys, they’re good for the sport and maybe they’ll motivate some new people to become bike owners. Pay attention out there and get home safe.

I've upgraded fuel tanks twice, put a full fairing on the front, crash bars, highway bars, p-pad, and sissy bar. I added saddle bags, and throw saddle bags over them. I also added a handlebar attached tool bag. It still runs great, plenty of power, and I can go 200 miles now on a fill. It doesn't bang out until 96 mph, and I've ridden it across the US twice in all weathers. The seat isn't ripped, but it has gotten stiff, and needs replaced. If you ride at high elivation the power almost halves anyway. And a pillion or steep hills don't help either. I have 85hp. I would not want any less that's for sure. Having the girlfriend on the back really takes the edge off the performance. It's just about ok otherwise.

      @@chrishart8548 I was thinking along the lines of a Kawasaki H2 with 197HP. How much of that 197HP are you going to use on the street at just a little over the speed limit? 80? 100? 120? I have boosted my HD Roadster up to 75HP myself. I would like to get it to the mid 80's. Will I use all of it? Probably not. I know I'll never get it to 120HP.

    Guys, not sure that you get this bike. It goes faster than any legal speed limit in the world. The weight is an advantage in windy conditions. Belt drive old school??? What the???
    Belt drive equals not oil and shit all over the place, no maintenance and a quiet, no noise drive train. Its a relaxing bike to ride, no screaming rpm motor below you. Brakes.... never had an issue them, stops great. Totally customisable. As an owner of multiple bikes, I'm confused by this video. Because this not a bike that screams high hp, you knock it. Lmao.... shakes your eye balls out. Its a motorbike guys, not a f,ing sewing machine. own one, put more than 20k klms on it, then review it, maybe then you opinion will change.

    Not entirely convinced by this analysis. I bought a 2004 XL with 40,000 miles on it, stock with the exception a pair of slip on silencers, and a K&N filter. It went well enough, but the handling was a bit baggy. I rebuilt the suspension to suit my weight, and set up the steering geometry, threw in a carb' jet kit, and off we went. Grossly over geared, so on went a chain and sprocket kit (21/51 IIRC) to lower the gearing. Goes like a stabbed rat up to 100, and handles predictably, no serious vibration. Starts on the button, no electrical problems, or mechanical. Seems OK for a 17 year old motorcycle.

    HD, drink the koolaid, buy the shirt... or spend less and buy a japanese cruiser that handles better, has more power, requires no mods, is more reliable, and honestly doesn't look any worse. I love that you guys kept comparing this to a 300cc bike, which, is honest; because most of the beginner 300cc bikes probably have more power and handle better.
    I work with a fella that decided to get a bike a couple of years ago. He was hell bent on getting a HD; the image was more important than the machine to him. To help him out, I went to the local HD dealer with him. While there, I got to listen to the sales folks try to sell him a $25k bike he didn't need. Make fun of the bike he did want, a Street 500, when they told him "we normally don't sell those to men." Proceed to try to up-sell him on everything, and take a bike that should have been about $8k out the door, to north of $13k out the door. At that point I was able to convince him to go across the road to the Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki dealer, and look at a Honda Rebel. There, the dealer treated him well, and he bought a brand new Rebel 500, which was better in every way over the Street 500, for less than the base price of the Street 500.
    Interestingly, that HD dealership is no more; they were closed down this past fall. That Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki dealer is still there.

Not sure if you helped me on my decision to buy or not but certainly armed me with lots of things to consider when I start my test rides..... I will ride a few pre-owned slightly modded bikes before I ride a new one.
