For reading books in a foreign language, I NEVER look up words.... well, almost never. If you feel like you aren't understanding what's going on because you don't know one word, then look it up. But I don't write it down, I just look it up, then keep reading. Because ultimately writing down the words you don't know will slow down the process and you will enjoy the book less. Reading with the audiobook can be helpful as well! For more beginners, the audiobook would definitely be great help to remember pronunciation, but if you are advanced and don't want to, then it's not necessary. Good luck with your goals!

    • @nikaa2282
      @nikaa2282 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree partially. I would say that it depends on your level. If you are at a A1-B2 in a language, then I'd highly advise against writing down all the unknown words because it forestalls the rhythm. However, if you are at a B2-C2 level and find new words in a book, do write them down. At least in my experience this has proven as beneficial. Currently I'm reading a book where there's 0 to 1 unknown word per page on average. The book has 200 pages thus eventually by writing the words down, I'll be able to incorporate many of these new words into active vocabulary, and without a doubt 200 in my passive vocab. Because if I hadn't written them down, I would have most likely just obliterate them from my short-term memory.

When reading a book in another language that you're learning, try to understand the context and "guess" what a word you don't know means, and then if you really don't understand, look up the definition. That's what my English teacher told me when I was learning English and it actually helped so much.

For the language learning in Spanish, I like to read a chapter and then imagine I'm talking to someone and trying to explain it. That way you are forced to learn new vocab with old vocabulary to keep expanding your ability to understand something and communicate that understanding (or lack of understanding). Those questions will also probably keep pushing you to learn other words and concepts in that language!
    Hope that helps!

hot tips for the reading in a foreign language biz (my german class uses this method for our textbook)
    1. Do a quick skim of the book highlighting any words you don’t know, put the words onto a set of flash cards/quizlet etc. and learn the words (as you do) to the point where you can recall them immediately.
    2. Read book again and it should be easier to understand
I know this takes forever but if you want a deeper level of understanding this shit is it

about language learning through reading books: i definitly agree that not looking up every word you don’t know can be quite distracting from the reading practice. usually if it’s not a word crucial for understanding what is being said, i wouldn’t stop and look it up immediately, but instead quickly underline it and go over those pages i read later to filter and eventually filter these words.

as for reading, i usually look up the meaning of words only in case i don't understand the context or i know that the word is used by native speakers in daily conversations. there is no point in writing down every single unknown word you see, this way reading a book will make you tired really fast, so just choose the words that you think are most often used and you're able to learn them (and not forget the other day u know) and also choose the words that YOU will use. since i study at the faculty of foreign languages i have no other choice but to learn the words i write down bc it's a monthly task lol but it's really useful !

I’m Russian who is trying to level up my English, so I picked up “1984” by George Orwell for my summer reading. I have B2, so I’m really capable of understanding the vast majority of the words and grammar construction, but there are of course some stuff that I have to translate, so I just find words that I don’t know and write the translation above them and keep reading. It’s quite quick to get used to, it doesn’t take much time from understanding what’s the book about too. And in future, if you want to review some stuff, you can do it whenever you want. Hope I helped a little ✨

I personally developed a technique for reading books in foreign languages. I use iBooks and highlight words or phrases that I don’t know using different colors depending on the category of this word or phrase (basic, sophisticated, collocations and idioms). Then I finish reading I do separate vocabulary lists and learn them focusing more on basic words and collocations because they are obviously more useful🙂 ( I am a native Russian speaker, so I use this method for books in English)

To answer your question regarding your 11th goal, I have read the Harry Potter books as a way to improve my language skills in English, and what I did was researching recurring words, and words that seemed really important to the general meaning of the sentence (for practical reasons). Each time I researched a word, I noted its translation down on the page with a pencil, under / beside the researched word, so that I could go back to them if I forgot about them. Eventually, I found that these new words kept recurring, and with repetition and a bit of a memory effort, I memorized them quite naturally ! So I would say that in order to make your reading "productive" (besides fun, ofc), you do need to translate some words, but translating all of them isn't a necessity, because if you keep on reading books in Spanish, unknown words will recur, you will then know them, and you will be able to learn/translate less-recurring words that are more specific to the context of the book, and so on and so on, until you hardly need translating anymore ! That worked for me :)

    on language learning with books:
the way I usually do it, if theres a word I understand in context I might write it down (or not even that, depending on if I'm more in a study or a reading mood). And for words I feel like I need to understand, or just want to, I look them up.
so how many words I look up greatly depends on whether I am reading for pleasure or learning that day, but I like to keep it like that :)

I think it depends on your level, however I usually keep reading because 1 I otherwise lose the flow and reading becomes a chore and 2, most of the times through context you will figure out what the vocab means when you keep reading

I would underline or circle the unfamiliar words as I go along and then look up the words after I finish the chapter, writing the English above or drawing a line out towards the margin and writing it there. I also don't tend to look up every.single.word: if there are lots of unfamiliar ones, I try to infer meaning from the context as much as possible. I prioritise circling and looking up words that recur and verbs :)

about Spanish books!! (8:49) I would not suggest to translate and put down every single word because that is really exhausting. I’ve tried to do it with Harry Potter books and I’ve been reading this book for like a year cuz I was too lazy and I needed an hour for one page.. So if you just read, it will keep you interested in it. You don’t even need to translate words, actually. Choose what is more comfortable for you, but I can say that you will probably understand the meaning of a word, and if you see this word several times you will remember it! Also, you can underline/highlight words you don’t know and after your reading session or after finishing a chapter you can go back and translate everything. It’s still better than translating and writing the words down right after you saw them. Hope it helped ❤️

When I read books in Portuguese(I have an intermediate level) I usually read a chapter and highlight and write down what words I don't know then after I finish the chapter I go back and look them up to review the full meaning of the chapter. I try to acknowledge the words I don't know but also try to use context clues. After, I only study the vocabulary I find to be important or common. Also, I read the last book in the To All The Boys I've Loved Before series in Portuguese and the writing is very simple so that one should be quite easy or easier than the other books.

Cool that you're learning portuguese, its my native language. What's are your native language? I was trying to read books like this but at the final, I highlighted the whole page 😫 🤣🤣
There is a tool on google where you select the word and the translation already appears on time, it's very interesting and I think it may help

Suerte!❤️

8:57 When I try to read a book in another languages, I just keep going to read the book without searching the unknown words. (Because I get easily distracted, and I cannot understand the real points of the book) While reading, I encircle some unknown words and then after finish the book just review the them couple of times, trying to memorize. Generally I read the same book at least twice with this technique, this is really really helpful for me :))
(but this is only valid if I can understand the meaning without knowing that 'exact word'. If not of course it is better to learn the meaning :) )
Also I have a rule to start a book; try to read couple of pages and if you can fully understand the book without checking the words, keep going. If not, find another book suits for your level

Hi Anna! My recommendation about looking out for every word or not is to NOT do it unless you know that that book is very important for you (f.e. book related to your career ). Keep in mind that if a word is useful it will appear repeadtly times, but if it´s not you will no longer see it and there´s no necessity to have learned it.
Hope this helps!! sending you the best vibes uwu

guess I’m 1year late to the party but when I read foreign books I try to guess the meaning of the words I don’t know through context, but I always try to look it up, after a little guessing-game, though I never write because I know I’ll never look at it again. It all ultimately builds up to a stronger knowledge of the language when you recognise it in other places and start realising all the different ways it can be used in a sentence. I like that slow process, it thrills me every time I get that eureka! moment

answering your question about reading in different languages - my first language is Polish and this year I've decided to not read books in Polish anymore because that's too easy lol
when I read an English book, I don't write down any words and I don't even search up the meanings if I don't really need to (I try to understand by context), however with Spanish I do search up the meanings and I put them on flashcards right away so I can study them easily afterwards (my Spanish is worse than my English so that's why), hope I helped at least a bit 💗

as a native spanish speaker, when I started to read novels in english I tried writing down every word I didn't know, but that just made me dread reading because it would only allow me to read in specific situations where I had the mindset, time, pen with me, etc to be able to do that, so nowadays I just read and try to understand words through the context and move on. I feel that makes it a more enjoyable experience for me and allows me to read more, and therefore, learn more, because even when I wrote down the words, I just never looked at them anymore so there was no point in that really hahahahahah

i've only started reading english books (my first language is dutch) when i knew i'd understand most of it and i've been learning english for a long time now so in every book theres like a maximum of 10 words i dont understand and yes i do look them up because i feel like i'd get lost if i don't but like if you dont know the language like almost completely like for example my french teacher (i suck at french) always tells me to only look it up if i really can't make anything from it and if you can't understand the rest of the sentence otherwise just keep reading and i think she's right.

    • @Zoe-nz6iz
      @Zoe-nz6iz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

also if its not a book from the library you can always take notes in the book and kinda explain it to yourself but yes this will be timeconsuming so i dont recommend it if your goal is to read a lot of books in a certain amount of time just do it if you're reading for fun or to actually learn it.

It's very refreshing to see these kind of videos, as school is finally over for almost everyone as well as uni, it's the perfect time for relaxation and summer goals. Watching the video about your goals really inspires me to do something with my summer although I got my plate full with IELTS and SAT, I'm still gonna try to jam some extra goals, you probably hear this a lot, but I do wanna say that your videos and how you express yourself in them and not to mention how you've matured over the years really shows how crazy fast time is flying and in order to succeed in life you don't have to shy away from working, so thanks Anna for being there for all of us and doing what you do in general 🤗❤️
Edit: I would personally look up the word and then continue reading, cause if you constantly stop to write down the word that makes reading as you said tedious, makes it more of a chore rather than an enjoyment. It's even better if you're able to try to find the meaning of the word in context. In other words try to understand the meaning of the word by looking at the sentence instead of looking up the meaning. From personal experience, that helps a lot to reinforce your language learning skills. But if you can't find the meaning of the word then juts look it up in Google. Hope that helped 😃
