  • I was so excited to do this build for Benjamin. He has these big 35" tires on his 3rd Gen 4Runner and wanted a spare tire carrier swingout. He wasn't sure about what to do for the bumper but knew he just wanted everything high clearance, super low profile and as minimal as possible. It was fun designing this one for him and altering the specifics as we went along.
In the end we decided on a full length swingout so he could get some fuel rotopaks on there sometime down the road and maybe some other items. The spare sitting right in the middle of the swingout looks awesome and it's tight and angled to his window which he loves.
Here's some of the items we used in this build, if you get them thru that link I might make a small commission from Amazon (I apparently have to tell you that), which I would totally appreciate. a.co/aAKWIVX

The angle of the tire profile is absolutely perfectly awesome! Way better for aerodynamics! Thank you!

Amazing quality work on that 3rd Gen but looks like it also needs a panhard bar correction setup in the future

Clint thanks for checking out the video. Glad it’s going to help you out. Lots of options for protecting the sides if you want or just leave it open. Benjamin put a nicer looking baffle cover on that left side though as he wanted it open

I would do a pan hard correction kit on that four runner

Your will is sticking out a quarter inch on the passenger side. You have got to do a panhard correction kit

Hi Mike thanks for checking out the video. Are you talking about the green 4Runner? That’s not mine, that’s a clients truck. I have one on the white 4Runner (now), can’t remember when I put that in

How do I get one exactly like that for my 97 4runner? Absolute perfection. Too many are too big and dont have high enough clearance. By far the best one I've seen yet.

love your fabrication videos, curious to know if the hinge is still holding strong? I used the same hinge however now i have a feeling should have used a double shear to balance the weight properly.

Hello Sir. Thanks for checking out the video. I’ve made bumpers and swing outs with both styles of hinges, this pin/axle style and the double shear. They’re all still working well as far as I know. I would say the double shear design is stronger (which is why I usually use that design these days) but keep in mind the majority of the time the hinge is being used it’s not jostling down an offroad trail at full extension. It’s just being opened while the truck is stopped. If the (other) end of the Swingarm is properly secured so the arm is locked in place then there isn’t that much force torquing on the hinge itself. Now, how you have the pin end of the hinge anchored might be an issue but if that’s properly secured and the other end of the Swingarm is locked down then you should be ok.
I did sell the initial bumper I made with that style hinge and went with the double shear on the new bumper/swing outs but only because I can easily make a new bumper for myself and wanted a setup that was higher and lighter.

@@OffroadGrind thx a lot for getting back to me, your videos truly help and inspire, watching your video I was able to make a swing out carrier using my old bike rack and few extra metal, it came out great and sturdy. Now my next mission is to build a winch mount front bumper using universal winch mount from harbor freight for my 18 gx460. Keep uploading and keep inspiring us! Cheers

Awesome! What gauge is the 3x2 channel? Im thinking of making something simular. Love the channel 🤘

Thanks Jeff. I ideally would have gone with 3/16” (cause I love to make things way too heavy) but it’s impossible to get around here. So I went with 1/8” on the 3x2 and was able to get 3/16” for the 2x2. I went with 1/8” as the majority of the time the swing arm is secured in the catch/stop so there’s very little stress on it while moving when most of the shaking is taking place.
