Almost 2 years later and I will say things are fine still for this. Only a few things I would change: 1) Use a bigger locking cam. It will make you feel more secure offroading since that little one is kinda wimpy 2) Move it slightly out further and not so close to the hatch. This will allow #1 to work properly. 3) Perhaps fab some struts to help with the weight.
Don't know much about working on vehicles but I'm happy I found this page since I own a 2001 4runner. Keep up the great work.. you're an excellent teacher.
Excellent. I stop carrying my tire on the door because it’s too heavy. Now I just carry it inside. Definitely will need to have the same set up you have because when I have tours, the back is where I put luggage etc.. thanks again for another excellent video Man.
I REALLY like this idea. I have a 2004 Lifted Suburban on 35s id like this for long trips. I'm in Vegas so I'm spoiled with a lot of Off roading close to me, but I would definitely like to take a spare sometimes. I usually travel with a truck load of kids and my wife and all their stuff lol so this would be perfect. Don't have a welder but maybe I can talk someone into a favor if i gather the materials.
Another Idea that would be cool to see you explore is the positioning of a doughnut shaped emergency tool kit that is basically an old spare tire with the side cut off to store more tools in case of emergency. using the spare tire mechanism to access them in the event that you need tools for some sort of breakdown. You may as well use that spare tire space for something under there ahe? If you are concerned about things bouncing in there you will want them wrapped up and perhaps even use a partially inflated inner tube to keep things in place when the tire is tucked under the rear there. I know that when we go camping it is nice to have some things that are rarely accessed out of the way and that could be a good spot now that you have the spare carrier...kick it up a notch?
@@PhoRunner did you have issues running with the stock gearing before you went with 4.88? I am asking because I just switched to BFG KO2 33's on stock gearing on my 98 4runner and I haven't really noticed any different compared to stock size wheels. Any feedback on this is appreciated. Thank you
@@PhoRunner i see. I watched your video on regearing & installing a locker on your front diff & it looked fairly easy (except for the little difficulty you ran into taking it out, lol). Very good & detailed video btw. I haven't come across your video on regearing the rear diff though. Did you do that yourself a well? I know you found an axle with a locker but I'm not sure if that is what you used and it already had 4.88 gears already. I'm looking into getting my diffs some lockers as well. How'd you like the lockers you installed for the front diff? I was thinking of going Thorsen lockers. What are your thoughts?
That video was only the front locker. I haven’t made a video on regearing yet because it’s a difficult job lol. I might make a recap video on that experience. It was a painful process :). I tore it all apart again to put in the new gears :)
Hi. Nice setup . I've been undecided on which kind of tire carrier to get. I've seen this kind of setup before and it's looking great. I'm curious, what truck did your hitch come from. I've never seen them with round tube like yours. I've only seen them with the square tube. Just curious. I like to know what parts fits my car/truck that are from different cars/trucks, lol. Thank you for your time.
@@PhoRunner thank you kindly. I like it better than the stock one i have. It looks more tucked in, less hangups. Happy New Year to you and your family. Thanks for your videos. It's helped me with my build.
@@PhoRunner that's what caught my eye. It was almost tucked in under the bumper and I like that better. You're right, the OEM was just too low. Thanks for sharing.
Do you find it causes issues with your departure angle? I would have gone this route but i also wanted options for mounting extra fuel, propane, and a shovel in addition to the tire. I think a diy swingout is what im gravitating towards. Thought? Love the channel and thanks for all that you do!
It’ll definitely hit that hitch ball area on departure. For all the extra goodies like maxtrax, propane, camp table, etc, a swing out is definitely a better option. As long as you don’t go to Costco with this vehicle, you won’t have an angry wife lolll
Hi I’m very interested on building the spare tire hitch I just need the red handle clamp would like to know where can I buy one so I can have it weld it thank you very helpful video hope to hear from you

Hopefully you can find some of the parts where you’re at. You can easily use 3 pieces of metal for the vertical piece.

You can buy a preassembled one that is much better. The welding and fabrication will be pricey
@@PhoRunner there's not much available out there. Do you have a link to something you've found? I'd be interested in checking it out.
🙏 Thank you for sharing your simple design. Great ideas I'll gladly swipe from you 😂🤌. Cheers 🍻, G. In beautiful Boulder City Nv. USA 🇺🇲
Enjoy!
dang you're on a roll today!
glad to see so much new content on the channel man.
Enjoy! Had a few days off work so made some videos for you guys
Nice and simple, this is a great project for a Saturday morning,
indeed!
Awesome! My brother has a similar setup and he also runs a skid plate in the receiver hitch. Cheers!
Nice! I love both your 5th gens! May pick me up one for the channel to mod and build when the prices aren’t insane lol

Totally what I was looking for.
Cool lol.
This is awesome! Great job! Next put on a supercharger lol
Lol can’t find an affordable one. The regear I did is satisfying my power needs for now. 488 are turning those tires fine now

I didn’t have issues city driving but going uphill was a chore. Very gutless. My tires are E range and mud terrains so probably heavier than the ko2

Dang! I need to make one of these ASAP.
Or buy one! Someone posted one for $530. Not too bad
Genius. Love it. Headed to my local Harbour Freight tomorrow! 👍
I bought many items that didn’t work lol. This is the simplest I could get it I guess.
Rad Pho Runner!!! Love your stuff man.
Very Cool! I was thinking of making something just like this, but the locking Cam is really a smart idea!
Thanks for the Inspiration
We need more content phorunner
Sorry fans… I got real busy after my time off in jan haha
Very very cool and not hard to do! Im gonna do this on my 4th gen as my 3rd gen is stock at the moment. Thanks and i love the channel!
Thanks and welcome
Great summary!
Thanks!! Just giving folks ideas!

This hitch is made by hidden hitch

It’s definitely higher up. It’s in line with the tube and doesn’t stick down an extra 2.5” like the oem one :)

I messaged you earlier this month asking about you suspension setup. Did you get my message? Just wondered.
Good job!
Nice job!
Thanks!
Looks good 👍👍
Thanks.
Nice
Thnaks!
I own a hummerh2, ford expedition and 94 bronco, I'm gonna make 3 of these

Check the description.
That nice man does it fit with the gobbi ladder?? If it do make me a pair ill buy it from u
I haven’t tried lol
Can you make one that'll swing out instead of down to access the back better?
I’m not that skilled lol
@@PhoRunner Can you run that by to someone that you may know if it's feasible?
There’s a few folks on TH-cam that have videos doing this. They use cardboard and 2x4 to mock it up.
@@PhoRunner Thank you, I'll check it out.
What hitch receiver are you using on that man?
I believe it’s a hidden hitch brand
How much ??? Would you make one for me ????
Sorry bud! I can’t make any for anyone and shipping would be crazy!
Is it actually possible to buy a “ready made” version of this. I’m not a welder etc
Of this exactly, no. But similar, better designed ones by professionals yes!
Is that a stock trailer hitch receiver? Yours doesn't hang down as low as mine.
No. I think it’s made by hidden hitch
@@PhoRunner Thanks...I like that one better than the bulky stock one.
Indeed. I like it too
do you sell one? I like that idea and also less expensive
I do not sell these
