I own this car and love it. I comparison shopped it against most of the competitors in the segment. The CR-V, with more cargo space, might be a better choice for a family. Turbos aren't usually the best option. Reliable issues. www.carthrottle.com/post/engineering-explained-the-pros-and-cons-of-turbochargers-vs-superchargers/
Well how else are we supposed to squeeze more power without adding size and cylinders. CAFE is not being nice to any manufacturer anymore. Auto makers have no choice in this game to downsize and add turbos. This whole "Turbos are unreliable" is a crock of shit from Consumer Reports and you know it. Also an "article" from a biased and second party "reviewer" are about as reliable as their insight in this industry
Automakers are going to electric route anyway to get replace combustion engines. Hybrids and electric are the way to go sadly. With naturally aspirated engines reaching its limits, electric motors will be more common. Boosting more power and efficiency. More supercars are going to electric motors to gain more power. Also this article is from Engineering Explained. Unlike you with no knowledge he pointed out the pros and cons of turbos. Turbos have their problems and they aren't reliable like naturally aspirated engines and the maintenance cost will be expensive. Jason knows what he talking about.
Kellan Larson Oh yeah Mazda did say they were going to increase the compression ratio of their SkyActiv engines. Even Sofyan said it Mazda was going to that route. In case you missed that and didn't listen, 15:50.
Joshua Johnson Mazda did make a statement on hybridization. Mazda claims it will use hybrids but not within the cycles of the current model lineup. That is still several years away
Ordered a 2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring w/ Premium Package this week but grey (same package shown). It shipped from Japan and arrived to port in Seattle Monday. Now have to wait for it to come to Chicago by train. I cannot wait! Great Review btw. My brother purchased the competitor the 2017 Honda CR-V Touring. Sharp car as well.
Today is the big day! The dealership called and the new CX-5 is ready to be picked up. Hopefully I don't regret not purchasing another Acura / Honda in the long run of 5 years.
As always I like your reviews in any brand of cars specially this one. This car is gorgeous and as most people said it is fun to drive that's why I choose this one for myself to buy. I'm excited to drive it. I've been waiting for your review of this car for a very long time as it is always the most complete one.
Everyone is ripping on the engine, but I think the engine is on par with competitors' numbers on comparable engines. Ford's 2.5L puts out the same numbers, as does Jeep's 2.4L, although everyone wants to compare this to a turbo i4 or v6 option. Honestly, it's a fair assessment considering Mazda only has one engine option, but that is why they put all the energy into the transmission tuning. Could it use a turbo, sure! Mazda even admits that any engine will fit in any engine bay, so you could always drop a 2.5T in there and get almost double the power if you really wanted to. Good luck getting your hands on one, tho. While it's not gonna beat anyone in a drag race, I have zero complaints about acceleration because it FEELS like it's moving quicker than it really is, since the trans is so responsive. As a city driver, I think it's great. It's able to get out of its own way, can weave in and out of traffic, and provides a little bit of fun in a stop-n-go commute. On the weekends, I can take it out and play on the highway and still be able to open it up and enjoy it.
It's not the engine that is the issue it's the lack of an upgrade engine. While the 2.5 is sufficient for most consumers and on par with the competition, there will always be a fraction of buyers that want more power. So, it's kind of a missed opportunity for Mazda because some competitors offering an upgrade engine.
And people think that adding turbos will be the best option. www.carthrottle.com/post/engineering-explained-the-pros-and-cons-of-turbochargers-vs-superchargers/
The soft touch part of the dash is actually a type of leather and the wood is actually real Cenwood.....(this car is in every way as good as an entry level BMW....I crossed shop both and actually drove the CX5 to a BMW dealer and they were blown away by the quality of the interior)...So if you’re going to compare it a mid to upper level Beamer then of course there’s not much of a comparison (or is there😉), but it’s every bit as nice, if not nicer, than the entry level luxury cars that are often times 10k more...
Thanks for being the only reviewer for pointing out the coarse and intrusive engine noise. I thought I would love this car but the engine noise was so loud and under powered. Felt like I was driving an 80s econobox.
Living in Scottsdale Arizona I experienced that during the hotter summer months the heads up display stops working during extreme temps. Mazda REALLY needs to look at correcting this (even if they have to go back to an imbedded display, or even one that goes up and down like audi...)
Safe styling? Every other vehicle in the class looks like either a deranged robot (CR-V) or an amorphous blob (Rogue). This is the only one with class, although the wheel wells are HUGE. The interior is also in a league of its own. My wife has a Grand Select in dark blue; it's fantastic.
Has anyone heard of paint issues with Mazda products? In my research, I am stumbling upon a lot of complaints from owners claiming the paint chips very easily.
Just replaced our 2 1/2 year old CX-5 with exactly the same (lease was up). Also liked the old rims better, the new design makes the wheels look smaller. Definitely more quiet and sharper but the retuned steering's weight is lighter than the old (which I preferred). Apple CarPlay and traffic on the NAV are necessary add ons.
If only they put the turbo from cx9 this vehicle will give Germans a run for its money. Mazda still doesn't know how to make money, no point just making great cars.. this vehicle is underpowered for its top end trim just like RAV4 and crv. But they don't realize they are no toyota and Honda in sales. They need to work more for people's money and they definitely need that turbo from cx9.
Mahesh Maintenance will be expensive with these turbos. www.carthrottle.com/post/engineering-explained-the-pros-and-cons-of-turbochargers-vs-superchargers/
I was thinking and I'd go for a hybrid if they offered it. Add like maybe 40HP to the engine and help with off the line numbers. Instant torque is always nice.
conan900 that’s a great idea but they will have to develop a new engine for it. Cx9 has a really awesome turbo engine that needs to be in Mazda 6 and cx5. There is a diesel coming out probably soon that will serve more like hybrid. More torque off the line but pretty much same power after
Good review but annoying the you keep wanting things updated that either work or are not that old - such as the key fob (2012), the Mazda connect head unit (2015) and the engines (introduced 2012). I am also surprised you cannot tell the first generation from the second. This one is much more stylish and premium. The six speed auto is fantastic and so what if it isn`t 8 speed, what matters is how well it works.
I personally prefer the previous design, the refresh does look sleeker with cleaner lines, but it lacks character that previous one has. When I bought my first Mazda which was 3 sedan, I became a big fan of their cars, I used to be a Honda fanboy, but not anymore, Mazda interior is simply the best, the ergonomics are really well laid out and designed with the driver in mind, it's so comfortable that I would not mind living inside the car if I had to. Mazda does lack the latest tech features, but if you need all that tech stuff to drive, you are not a good driver to begin with. While inline-4 engine from Mazda is adequate I do sometimes wish it had more high-end power when on the highway, I've floored the gas pedal on CX-5 once and I don't think it can go faster than 85 mph to be honest. If they put anything close to Honda's delicious V6 engine in there, it would be golden. I think the Mazda car that I own now will be my last gasoline powered car, I will be driving it for 3 to 4 more years, by that time, EV models will be widely offered by many car companies and I will probably get one of those and say good bye to gasoline car forever.
It doesn't surprise me that this guy gets the information incorrect on the vehicles that he does reviews on that's because he doesn't really do the research on the vehicles he just says whatever he wants to and that's obvious
When buying a few years ago, I test drove about everything in this class, the CR-V, The Rav4, CX5, etc. I ended up wanted a little more size and power, so went with the Acura RDX, but I will say that the Mazda was easily my top choice amongst the rest, and I was surprised by that. Since, I've recommended it to several and all have been pleased with their purchase! The intangible is this... By far the most fun to drive!
C. Michael Rush i may just wait til 2019 for the next RDX, because all these SUVs leave me unsatisfied, and I dont wanna choose only between the Murano and Ford Edge.
Tired of hearing 'Hard to tell the difference between old CX5 and the new one'. Every single panel is different. The A-pillar is further back, the roofline is lower, the front end and side character lines are completely different. No the engine doesn't need updating, it was state of the art 5 years ago and most competitors have only just caught up to it's efficiency.
Mazda is asking a lot from their Skyactive 2.5L engine. It's in the Mazda3s, the Mazda6i, the CX-5. Depending on the weight of the vehicle. I will be either spot on (Mazda3s or feel a little under powered). The handling and overall fit and finish more than make up for the lack of acceleration.
Great review, you nailed all the good points and faults. The range launches in thailand in 2 months although maybe without the option of cream trim and possibly carries over the old diesel engine.
As always, stellar review! The updated CX-5 should lead to even more consumers flocking into Mazda dealers. I was shocked when I heard the MPG ratings, though. The previous MX-5 offered pretty great fuel economy out of its SkyActiv Technology engine, but this updated one seems to leave a bit more desired in that area (maybe the increased weight, different tire choice, updated EPA rating scale, and the slightly updated engine tuning caused a slight drop)... 🤔 The exterior of this vehicle most definitely boasts a more poised and athletic stance over the taller previous model, though. Also, the interior is leagues ahead of many of its older competitors, as well. It just needs minor technological updates and it will be golden! 🌟🌟🌟 Overall, I feel like this update was a pleasent one for Mazda to conduct. Once Mazda offers that Diesel option, I feel like the CX-5 will be the 'complete' package for people looking for the best of both worlds in their Compact Utility Vehicle. From one car enthusiast to another, keep up the great work, Sofyan! 👍🏽
Bruce Solomon, Thank you so much for your comment, but as you know everyone has their own opinion. Honestly, I truly enjoy being as through as possible with my reviews, and likewise, in my comments.
Mazda's new Skyactiv X engine is NOT stated to hit markets until 2019, debuting in the all-new 4th Generation Mazda 3, so its essentially two years away not months.
My 2015 mpg is horrible on the highway. The most I have ever achieved was 28mpg. Because it is heavy and has no turbo, it takes a lot more throttle to keep up with every day traffic, which kills the mileage. City mileage hasnt been bad.
But the price is a down part for the top end trims . I know mazda is targeting against competitors like german brand entry models but they really need to improve a lot in everything.
Honestly, right now? I would get the CR-V, until I drive the diesel CX-5 or wait for the SkyActiv-X engine, which is rumored to be supercharged. - Sofyan

Great review but gotta disagree with you on the (obviously personal taste) subject of the styling. This is a million times better than the previous model and has sharpened up all the design flaws of the previous model. This is one of my favourite looking (for this segment, which isn't really inspiring)
So comparing this to the Kia Sportage SX (turbo), which do you think is better? Also, looking for advice on choosing a new-ish mainstream SUV like this Mazda vs. a used Audi Q5/BMW x1. Thoughts?
Been looking at this beautiful car since it came out and I reallllly want a grand touring. But my only concern is, is it quick from a stop? My 2010 Ford sport trac feels sluggish and I love that umph when you get pushed back in your seat. The only thing I wanna know is Can I get up and go with this car faster than my truck?
Sofyan if you were looking to drop your cash on a used SUV which one of these would you get Mazda CX-5, Honda CRV, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4? Could you list them in order and why. Thanks so much man good videos. Also I did have a chance to look at this CX5 and noticed the rubber around the door frame was the most loose I've seen in awhile
I thought so too but that is actually the correct racing way. Pull to shift up and push to shift down. It makes sense and most people rarely use that manual mode unless your towing or need to hold gears on a mountain road.
Just my 2 cents, but I don't understand why reviewers continue to compare the CX-5 with CRV, Hyundai and RAV4. The CX5 is great looking SUV with a luxury/refined interior, while the other SUVs are UGLY and have plastic interiors. I keep hearing no power, limited off the line acceleration and no passing power, what? This is not a sports car, it's a comfortable, easy to drive, get around town SUV. Sometimes, I think reviewers watch other reviewers videos first and just regurgitate the same points. Take the Mazda badge off the CX5 and compare features, fit, finish and pricing to BMW X1/X3 and Audi A3 and I think you have a more reasonable comparison. I usually like Redline reviews, but this one is a miss! Btw, don't you have a Miata? I don't hear you talking about getting blown away off the line in your "sports car" , I'm just saying.
Agreed. Usually Sofyan provides balanced and insightful commentary but him saying this needs more power and in the same breath touts the CR-V (with its CVT) as a comparable and possibly better option for enthusiasts is confusing. Like you said, these are not sports cars - this is for carrying your family and sh*t around town but still having an enjoyable drive. How's that CVT drone in the CR-V?
As much as it annoys CX5 owners/lovers it is a generic compact SUV. Just like a RAV4, CR-V, Tuscon etc. Its not an Audi or Lexus competitor. Since we got that out the way I will admit the CX5 and the new CRV are the standouts in this class. And since people buy these not for their sporting pretension but for their practicality, the CRV wins. The marginally better driving dynamics cant out punch the CRV which is faster and more efficient and far more practical. Dont start on looks either, I think they both look dandy in their own way
It's in the same exact class as the CR-V, Hyundai, and RAV 4. Keep in mind you literally just talked about "looks" more than anything and you can't make fair points based on opinions instead of facts. Looks are subjective. Also, Mazda purposely advertises itself as a sportier model. It's not a sports car, because it's an SUV, but it's aiming to be a sportier SUV while still maintaining many of the practical functions you get out of a "SPORTS" utility vehicle (aka SUV). That first letter in "SUV" stands for sport and they are just leaning more towards the sports side of it. In fact, the 2019 model actually improved the engine so now you do get that punch and shows you exactly what they are aiming to do. The reason to get this car over the Honda CR-V, Toyota, Hyundai, etc is this is for the more sportier feel. From a ln actual objective standpoint (not subjective like looks) the Honda CR-V out performs this vehicle hands down in most categories. It even has faster acceleration with a CR-V transmission and more towing/torque. It also has more space which are key components of wanting a SUV to begin with. It has better MPG. Your only qualm is you think it looks worse which is debatable depending on whom you ask. Besides, looks alone aren't good enough when we're getting down to the nitty gritty. I disagree with your assertion. This is not a luxury vehicle. It is still in direct competition with those in its actual class. It may have a luxury feel, but that doesn't equate to being in the same class as a Alfa Romeo, Lexus, Porsche, etc. which would likely all have more than just the looks anyhow and stout better performance overall in many models. It's a step in a direction towards a more luxurious cabin, but you're overstepping boundaries to call it a full on luxury vehicle simply because you like the looks. It's a fine review and redline understands the audience and actual class this car is in direct competition with here. Can't wait for the 2019 model, because it literally does exactly what this review is harping on and shows how off you actually are here if you don't think Mazda is going for a sportier vehicle.
@@caseyfryback8271 Say what you want, but Mazda is going in the direction of making its models more sportier and packing a bigger punch overall. They are evolving into a more sportier model SUV and are marketing towards those types of people who may want a bit more of a sportier feel in their SPORTS utility vehicle. Doesn't have to be a full on sports car to have more of a sports feel similar dynamics. Don't believe me, go look at the new 2019 model of this car they just packed on a much more powerful turbo engine and upped the horsepower for a reason. If they truly didn't care about making the car a sportier model or letting you have more power there would be no reason to make it so. So I must say, you are off if you think requesting an upgrade that this Mazda has actually been moving towards and is now releasing was off. The upgrades starts to put it in range with the Forrester XT that is mentioned in this very video. Gotta pay attention to industry before commenting. Mazda has always been the type to lean towards sportier cars. There SUV's are no exception and thus it is perfectly in line to have requested and be in expectance of many of the things he mentioned. Especially since the newest model actually follows just that.
i think the new styling is gorgeous. I keep seeing them and thinking they are cx-9. I think its a little off to say its hard to tell the difference between last look and this look.
Excellent Review Sofyan! I'm impressed with how Mazda continues to deliver fantastic results with their vehicles on an overall scale, with the 2nd Gen CX-5 being no exception! Aside from the forth coming diesel engine offering, I do wish that the company would look into developing SkyActiv V6 Engines for at least one of their vehicles to be more competitive with the other automakers, while at the same time giving consumers more options to look at if they choose to buy a Mazda in a configuration like that. In addition, after testing both the redesigned Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5, which one do you like the best? - Michael
Between the CR-V and CX-5, we actually find the CR-V to be more appealing. We like its turbo engine and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Once Mazda updates that though, the needle will swing in the Mazda's favor.
It's really good that Mazda is not going the CVT transmission Route CVT's suck

Automakers are going to electric route anyway to get replace combustion engines. Hybrids and electric are the way to go sadly. With naturally aspirated engines reaching its limits, electric motors will be more common. Boosting more power and efficiency. More supercars are going to electric motors to gain more power. Also this article is from Engineering Explained. Unlike you with no knowledge he pointed out the pros and cons of turbos. Turbos have their problems and they aren't reliable like naturally aspirated engines and the maintenance cost will be expensive. Jason knows what he talking about.
Kellan Larson
Oh yeah Mazda did say they were going to increase the compression ratio of their SkyActiv engines.
Same waiting here, my akera will be delivered in 7th October
Same here. Waiting to be delivered ...
Mazda really is on the upswing, especially with the new low emissions engine that they just developed. I like it a lot
Steven Joe unfortunately for car makers fractions of buyers don’t make them money.
2 yrs ago, this engine was more than enough and better than most in class, now its anemic? lol ok
Well said!
Mazda CX-5 is truly a spectacular car that exemplifies the Mazda prestige.
Mazda is on a roll!
The wheels look a lot like the ones on my 2015 Toyota Camry XSE V6.
Bought a cx-5 Sport. I 💙 it!
I was just watching the '16 version video 😂😂
This needs a twin turbo V6 immediately.
My wife has a Grand Select in dark blue; it's fantastic.
sofyan you mentioned the Skyactive X will be. available in a few months at 15:52 but I believe it will come out in 2019-2020. Please check that :)
I like that melodic trance music during the intro. What's the artist and title?
If only they put the turbo from cx9 this vehicle will give Germans a run for its money. Mazda still doesn't know how to make money, no point just making great cars.. this vehicle is underpowered for its top end trim just like RAV4 and crv. But they don't realize they are no toyota and Honda in sales. They need to work more for people's money and they definitely need that turbo from cx9.
Mahesh Maintenance will be expensive with these turbos. www.carthrottle.com/post/engineering-explained-the-pros-and-cons-of-turbochargers-vs-superchargers/
Joshua Johnson these are relatively economical turbo motors
I was thinking and I'd go for a hybrid if they offered it. Add like maybe 40HP to the engine and help with off the line numbers. Instant torque is always nice.
conan900 that’s a great idea but they will have to develop a new engine for it. Cx9 has a really awesome turbo engine that needs to be in Mazda 6 and cx5.
There is a diesel coming out probably soon that will serve more like hybrid. More torque off the line but pretty much same power after
Joshua Johnson if that’s the concern cx9 wouldn’t have a turbo engine as an option.
Mazda CX-5 2,2 bi-turbo Sky-D 150 Hp km/l 17,9. it also come as 175 hp and AWD and it returns around 17,2 km/l :) EU models
I never had much luck trying to drive without my hands on the steering wheel.. at least that's how I failed my driving test
😂😂
Good review but annoying the you keep wanting things updated that either work or are not that old - such as the key fob (2012), the Mazda connect head unit (2015) and the engines (introduced 2012).
I am also surprised you cannot tell the first generation from the second. This one is much more stylish and premium.
The six speed auto is fantastic and so what if it isn`t 8 speed, what matters is how well it works.
Guy A the guys sounds a like pretentious douche bag
Badass editing man
Hey I love your reviews! The sunroof is actually available as a preferred package on the touring model, not standard.
the original 2007 cx7 made 244 hp! i really wish they bring that power back in the future
They're bringing the 2.5T from the 6 to this next year.
From what I saw the seats fold 40, 40, 20 not 60, 40
It doesn't surprise me that this guy gets the information incorrect on the vehicles that he does reviews on that's because he doesn't really do the research on the vehicles he just says whatever he wants to and that's obvious
Vic da G I totally understand, it is a tough to find something inspiring without moving into some huge bucks...
I wish it had the 2.5l turbo, if it had that I think more people would purchase this car
They're doing it in 2019
How does the driving experience compare with the 2017 Kia Sportage SX?
Sofyan, where did you get word on the diesel version? The Mazda website has nothing but a notify me thing, but good insider stuff is always good :D
It is good as it is no need for fancy useless updates that make it expensive and adds no really value. Keep it like that just perfect 👌
Great review! I'm getting my cx tomorrow... It is the same you have in your review. Can't wait
Best car reviews! Thanks!
Great review, you nailed all the good points and faults. The range launches in thailand in 2 months although maybe without the option of cream trim and possibly carries over the old diesel engine.
Very Jaguarish front end? Or just me? Over all, beautiful car
The exterior of this vehicle most definitely boasts a more poised and athletic stance over the taller previous model, though.
Also, the interior is leagues ahead of many of its older competitors, as well. It just needs minor technological updates and it will be golden! 🌟🌟🌟
Overall, I feel like this update was a pleasent one for Mazda to conduct. Once Mazda offers that Diesel option, I feel like the CX-5 will be the 'complete' package for people looking for the best of both worlds in their Compact Utility Vehicle.
From one car enthusiast to another, keep up the great work, Sofyan! 👍🏽
DraveAndBeDriven don't listen to these two gutter level degenerates. Your reviews are great and morons like this will never produce anything of value.
Bruce Solomon, Thank you so much for your comment, but as you know everyone has their own opinion. Honestly, I truly enjoy being as through as possible with my reviews, and likewise, in my comments.
Best review ever,keep it up
My 2 major improvements or updates to this vehicle even more phenomenal. A more powerful 4 cylinder engine, and Apple car play and Android auto.
It's about time 🙌🏼 I've been waiting . . . . . . & waiting for your review on the CX-5 😂👌🏾
187 hp is to low . nice looking and the car is hot too !
i think the hp is fine .. more torque would be nice.
I wish Mazda used the faux wood that's on the dash and door panel for the area around the transmission, instead of that tacky black plastic.
I love the CX-5, was seriously considering it. The weakness though was the engine, ended up with XT forester.
2016 gt exterior looked much more exciting. Glad it's less noisy inside, although bummed they softened it up.
Mazda's new Skyactiv X engine is NOT stated to hit markets until 2019, debuting in the all-new 4th Generation Mazda 3, so its essentially two years away not months.
Whereas for taste and sophistication get the Machine Grey Metallic.
I bought the diesel last December.
I love it.
Waiting to buy the Mazda 6 but I want a cx 5 grill
My 2015 mpg is horrible on the highway. The most I have ever achieved was 28mpg. Because it is heavy and has no turbo, it takes a lot more throttle to keep up with every day traffic, which kills the mileage. City mileage hasnt been bad.
got the new turbo CRV awd and usually get 34-37 hwy
But the price is a down part for the top end trims . I know mazda is targeting against competitors like german brand entry models but they really need to improve a lot in everything.
ok sofyan,
but which would YOU buy if it was your money. fully loaded cr-v or fulled loaded cx-5?
Honestly, right now? I would get the CR-V, until I drive the diesel CX-5 or wait for the SkyActiv-X engine, which is rumored to be supercharged.
- Sofyan
Redline Reviews i agree
IRL Zoom zoom gets shut down by the mom-mobile with more SUV practicality and efficiency... www.motortrend.com/cars/honda/cr-v/2017/2017-honda-cr-v-vs-2017-mazda-cx-5-comparison-review/
Actually the Subaru Forester has a pano roof and is a small(ish) Japanese SUV.
Awesome Review Of 2017 Mazda CX-5. 😀
Man you lost a lot of weight! Looking good brother! Thumbs up
Great review but gotta disagree with you on the (obviously personal taste) subject of the styling.
Thoughts?
Ammazing review! Mazda needs a turbo engine to pair whit that fantastic looks.... love this car!
Pretty good and quick overall review! Thanks!
If compact hatchbacks weren't a thing I would buy this. I'm happy with my civic hatch
Nice video My friend
Real professional congrats
Did anyone else notice at 7:45 that pushing the level "up" is to down shift while pushing the lever "down" is to up shift? That's just odd.
Also, the comment on if you want more power you can go with something like the eco boosted Escape lmao. Please, man. Fix Or Repair Daily.
The infotainment screen looks like mazda forgot to put the screen at the last moment so they just sticked a screen on top of the dash .
i think the new styling is gorgeous.

Looks good.
