In some respects, the EQ13 is both an upgrade and a downgrade from its predecessor, the EQ12. The EQ12 is mostly available as the N100, but it also sports 2 Intel 2.5G network ports, DDR5. The EQ13 downgrades the ram and network ports, and adds in the integrated power supply, better cooling, and dual NVME slots, although the drive shipped is indeed SATA which is limited to about 500 MBps. If you want a firewall appliance, the EQ12 is a better alternative, IMHO due to the Intel Network ports. I do believe that the 1st NVME slot is 3 lane, and the second is 1 lane; top speed I saw was about 3500 MBps with a NVME drive installed instead of the factory provided SATA drive. The second port topped out at about 900 MBps with the same NVME drive. The provided SATA drive does not work in the second NVME slot. On the EQ12, the second drive slot is SATA, allowing one to use a 2.5 inch SATA drive.
The EQ13 does have a larger cooling area for the heatsink exhaust; the port on the EQ12 is a bit smaller. Overall, you get a bit more CPU headroom with the EQ13 N200 over the EQ12 N100; something you'll appreciate when it comes to Windows updates. The DDR4 of the EQ13 vs the DDR5 of the EQ12 is not that noticeable in real life; just cheaper if jumping up to 32G.
The single slot nature of the RAM slot is an Intel design limitation, as is the number of lanes for the NVME slots; I do think many of the changes were made to make the device more competitive against other brands, like going to Realtek network ports, and going with DDR4 instead of 5. Overall, either system makes a nice low powered server, or cheap workstation for general use.

I just got one to be a silent server, not for playing games. I have a 7950x + 4090 for that
That's why I chose it over some 5560U solution. I wanted something that sips power and remains very very quiet.

@@TechMishka, the thing is that I actually need something! My NAS does not seem to be powerfully enough to transcode 4k HDR movies in real time. It is annoying when I need to pause and wait for it to transcode ahead.

Looks interesting, but for the same price I could get a Beelink with a Ryzen5 5560U. I'm curious about the comparison about the two.

I'll choose the 5560U, despite being slightly older.

Neat mini pc with some very interesting characteristics like the dual Lan, opening the pfsense router use, the replaceable ram storage and wifi, integrated power supply making it really compact, and extra m.2 slot although slow at 1x. Personally looking to setup a pfsense firewall router and this is a contender for sure.
    Thanks for sharing

N200 seems a bit overkill for pfsense/opnsense when you can get Topton's N100 with 4 i226 LAN ports for $200 or the N100 version of the EQ13 for around the same price if you don't mind the realtek NICS. For media PC or light gaming the N200 makes a lot more sense with the extra graphics power.

    • @tendosingh5682

@@nadtz Not overkill depending on what features you use in pfsense. Using mini pc as a firewall appliance is a bad idea for many reasons including cooling.

@@tendosingh5682 Where exactly would pfsense/opnsense benefit from the better GPU in the N200 compared to the N100? And as someone who has been using a mini pc for opnsense for about a year now I'd have to disagree with it being a bad idea. I've also deployed protectli and netgate devices which basically are mini pc's for clients without issue. Cooling can be an issue for higher TDP mini's but that's not what we are talking about here.

More than 700 years. A huge farm with over 1000 / 4090's takes almost 6 weeks to mine a single BTC... the power consumption at the lowest residential rate in the USA would be well over 200,000 USD. If you want to make profit on BTC in 2024, you must have some gimick ... like you are a Chinese Electrical company owner who can also get a stupid good deal on GPU's . labor and a warehouse to run them all.

There is no Vesa mount. You can use Velcro or other ways to mount it, but it won't be as good

I continue not to understand the lack of VESA mounting. These machines are so light you can easily hang them on a bracket with 2 screws, and you'd think mounting it on the back of a monitor for a kiosk or all-in-one setup would be a compelling use case.

What was clearance between the heat sink and the m.2 boards like? Would it be possible to fit a coral TPU on the B+M adapter (so added thickness) between the heat sink? Or space the sink up with some small washers and maybe space the bottom cover up the same amount?

EQ used to be a premium N100 product. Because Alder Lake doesn't have a lot of power, DDR5 and NVME make a big difference to the user experience, and these are standard on EQ12 but not EQ13. I would take the extra smoothness of the EQ12 over the marginally faster clock on EQ13 - and EQ12 works over USB power as well. This is a nicely packaged little PC, but can't help but think that it's a downgrade over the old EQ12, which is still on sale. This is more of an upgrade to the N100 Pro

Beelink should be praised for using a slower M.2 SATA SSD instead of a QLC NVME because of stability? Perhaps Beelink should have used a stable NVME in the first place. It is a silly argument and comes across as a form of apologist that leads one to wonder whether this is more of an advert for the company, rather than an objective review.

    • @TechMishka
      @TechMishka  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I have seen too many horrible QLC drives that mostly irritate you by its performance.
True - the SATA option is limiting, but I prefer it over a crappy QLC and it is obvious that they did it because of budget constraints.
And of course - I'd love to see NVME in any PC with good hardware. But we both know that a good one would cost as much as the PC itself.
