Behind the scenes...recorded 800 clips on this trip and over 400 of them were deleted. I delete clips that I don't like or don't use because the data storage needs for filming trips are huge. There have been many trips this summer and I'm just trying to keep some stuff flowing, but I'm mostly out tripping while I can. The longer trips will take longer to edit :)

I do the same thing when it comes to deleting footage! If I take six shots trying to capture the mood of a particular lake or sunset or animal, and half of them are blurry, those are getting completely thrown out. Why waste the data on things I wouldn't want to keep?
That's a lot of deletion... Good to know I'm not the only one that does that though.

A man goes into the wilderness and emerges five days later. Other than having eaten one fish no one would ever know he was there. Truly appreciate this!
Actually he leaves many witnesses behind, all those fishes ( muinus one ) can say "There was a man here, who takes them out, judges their weight and gently releases them back" 😂.

When I fished these lakes as a 10 year old , it never crossed anyone's mind, and barbless hooks were unknown,, we may have been the first people to drop a line in some of them.
6-8 pound pickerel were normal in this area, in the deep pools. The University river was a spot people in Wawa tried to find for many years. A lot of 4 and 5 pound specks came home

Great video. Was out fishing on a lake in Haliburton years ago and catching nothing but Rock Bass close to shore. Rockies are an invasive species in that area so we're asked not to put them back. Was looking for a place to dispose of them when a little head popped up on shore. I must have fed that mink 20 Rockies. It started getting bolder and bolder and eventually swam out and tried to climbed into my boat. Time to leave, but was pleased I disposed of Rockies to a deserving creature. Never encourage people to feed wildlife but figured this was an acceptable exception. 🐟

Ok, good people who are fans of Lost Lakes- what does walleye taste like? I have a friend from Wyoming who describes it as Rocky Mountain lobster? Thoughts?
I fish walleyes all the time, most people like it because it has absolutely no fishy taste at all. To compare it to other fish, I personally think it’s very close to haddock. That is me, not talking about anyone else. I personally prefer river perch because of its taste but it was so over netted by the natives and commercial fishermen now a descent size perch is hard to find and that is in the mighty St. Lawrence river.
@@marceldion4688 Thanks, Marcel! We have perch in the lakes and rivers of northern New England. I have seen lakes in Northern Maine “ boil” when perch go on feeding frenzy. All my best trout lures for lakes resemble the green and yellow perch stripes. Thanks so much for the reply. I look forward to my first Walleye! Tight lines....
I think haddock is a good comparison in the sense that it's not fishy or overly flavourful on its own (compared to trout or salmon, for instance). Takes on flavours well, but on the flip side, I wouldn't eat it unseasoned whereas something like brook trout inherently has a lot of flavour

For all the thousands of fish I've caught in my life, I still find it difficult to kill them, especially brook trout. Although a nice walleye dinner is worth the moral dilemma.
I know, there's something about brook trout in particular...just how precious they are I guess
I've just got back from 3 days on one of our rivers, I envy your peace and solitude, I've had nothing but motorboats and noisy canoeists. This has restored my faith that not everywhere is full of 'humanity' on this planet...yet.

Hey Jean-Marc, that's a good idea. In the meantime, #1 is just due diligence...if I don't leave smelly or tasty things around camp, I can feel at ease. If I realize I didn't pack away the toothpaste or something, that leads to worry. I also try not to clean fish at a campsite. I also like to have my bear spray handy when I sleep and something to whack a bear with (like a beaver-chewed stick or something) can help provide peace of mind too. And I just try to think about the odds....it's very unlikely to have an incident if you're careful with bear awareness :)

I've been fishing my whole life and I feel the same way about killing the fish I catch. Oddly, the older I get the fewer fish I keep. I'll keep a few stocked trout every spring but never natives.
One of those things where the little thoughts start to add up over time...you either think about it more and more and it gets to you, or you avoid thinking about it and become numb to the subject. And I agree, it feels easier to keep a stocked fish
Same for me. Once I got into my 50's it started becoming difficult to kill fish. I've taken to doing like Jon does. I kill with a rock right away and find a spot to filet. I carry a small soft sided cooler for the meat until I cook it up. Last thing I want to do is drag them around on a stringer.

Such a photogenic little ball of energy hahah. I go main pack (with smaller tackle backpack slung over my front) first, then the barrel with the canoe. I like to take the canoe last so that I can drop it right in the water at the other end, and so that I have the walk back to improve the trail a bit...pushing the canoe through brush can be so exhausting. Hahah got that right Gavin...however there might be downtime for that someday. It's a great topic. In the meantime, I just wrote a review of the Pal for their site which is copied here if you want to read it. It speaks to some of that.
99% of my tripping had been in prospectors before I got my Pal. I looked at dozens of models from all manufacturers but landed on the Pal and I liked it immediately. A little narrower than a prospector but still very stable, faster, and less impacted by crosswinds.
I bought this boat primarily for solo trips (with the option for tandem) in northern Ontario off the beaten path and got the Tuffstuff layup for durability. Jagged rocks are not friendly to the gel coat (which I’ve touched up with West System epoxy), but the hull is strong. My bags didn’t fit flat when soloing initially, but after removing the second seat (an easy operation), there’s tons of room for my 115L pack and 60L barrel. If packing for a tandem trip, fitting a second 115L pack might be tight and then the prospector may have just that extra little bit of room needed to do so.
I took the Pal on a solo trip on Lake Superior from Silver Islet to Rossport and didn’t lose one day to conditions, despite being undecked (with a dry suit of course). In some tough wind and 2-3ft swells, it was very stable. In fact, at one point I was distracted while filming some video and a huge swell broke on a shoal I hadn’t noticed. It took me for a wild ride but the boat responded and saved my bacon.
I run a little whitewater but nothing over class II and I’m comfortable with using this boat undecked for that application. I increasingly use a double blade on flat water due to a wrist issue and my 250cm paddle is just enough for the Pal, though 260 or 270 would be better. I got the aluminum trim which is my preference (I don’t like maintenance) and the skid plates. It’s a versatile boat, a pleasure to paddle, and I look forward to taking it around Ontario for many years.
Hey Carol, they have their place but for what I do, a canoe is the way to go, and has been proven over thousands of years on this land to be the optimal vessel. Inflatables I just don't trust, especially with hooks flying around, and to me they only makes sense when the amount of overland travel exceeds the amount of water travel. Collapsible I would only bother with if it was required for a fly-in, but I doubt that'll ever be the case for me. More fussy and expensive without much benefit for my uses...I certainly wouldn't go through that process for each portage. And kayaks I would only want on the ocean or maybe Superior, but the canoe gets by on Superior. Too difficult to portage and less cargo room for big packs and fishing rods and such

How is that attitude? I'm saying that kill or slaughter would be perfectly appropriate, but really it's just semantics. Taking a life...whatever word you want to use. I ate a fish on the last day of this trip, and have eaten many on this channel. I just hate the aggressive LUST that some people express, trying to peer pressure people into eating a bloody smorgasbord of flesh for the gluttony of it. I have no problem with a healthy, non-aggressive appreciation for fresh fish. I actually just cropped out that part of the video so that no one else misunderstands me, jumps to conclusions, or overreacts like I just took their firstborn child. But if I lose that type of audience, that works too. I'm not some sycophant begging people to watch, just sharing what I love to do.

It's not dehydrator specific by any means. One adjustment that's necessary is to diced the potatoes more finely. Like 1cm cubes. They're tougher to dehydrate and rehydrate so the smaller the better.
As I watch, I think of how long it takes you to set up a B roll shot for 12 seconds of filler. It's important and adds great value to your content, but I know for sure it's a big time drag for you, and I just want to say I appreciate how much effort it takes. I sometimes film myself on my bassboat, only for my own pleasure, and I begrudge the time that takes against fishing time. Alone, simple tasks take more than twice as long against if you had help. Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks a lot ARE! Same old camera, but slowly learning lessons over the years. For instance, with respect to light sources, sometimes I want to film to the east but the lighting is bad. The scenery might not be as nice to the west, but if that's where the lighting is good, that's where I'll try to shoot. Things like that, using a polarizing filter more effectively, etc. Hahah the good ol' river slog :)
